Lucrative update

Lucrative release 4 is out. I know many people are used to seeing releases numbered like "0.000001", "0.000002", "2.0.3.0.14.657" etc. but release numbering systems are essentially arbitrary in nature so don't get excited as Lucrative goes toward version 50+. This release is a fairly minor one, but included some changes such as the client name that I wanted to get out as soon as possible. There is also a new development weblog at http://lucrative.thirdhost.com/weblog/. I went through an install with someone over IRC last night and made a blog entry summarizing the install notes. I recommend reading the notes before attempting an install. I am glad to help with an install, drop me a note at patrick(a)lfcgate.com if you have trouble. Hence, it is paramount to detect, analyze and shutdown such overlay networks before they become active. Research on botnet activity is mostly related to detection and disruption. Detection of botnets has focused on monitoring bot activities, especially during the spread of malicious software to infect new hosts (initial infection phase) and the communication messages exchanged between bots and botmasters (rallying and updating phases). Some behavioral aspects are common: bots have to signal the botmaster informing they are alive, each time their hosts are started; bots send messages whenever connecting and joining with the botnet; the botmaster has to send commands to each zombie machine before initiating malicious activities. This special issue of Computer Networks is intended to foster the dissemination of high quality research in all aspects regarding botnet activity, detection and countermeasures. The objective of this special issue is to publish papers presenting detection algorithms, traffic monitoring and identification, protocols and architectures, as well as botnet modeling, behavior, simulation, statistics, dissemination, analysis, preventive procedures and possible countermeasures. [tor-talk] Orbot Data Overhead

I made a blog post <https://guardianproject.info/2012/06/20/orbot-data-tax/> on the Guardian site about the data cost incurred by Orbot usage. It generally seems quite manageable for most use cases. Running in the backround 24/7 for 30 days does incur ~200MB of idle usage which would be significant for mobile users with smaller data plans. Check out the post for more details. In the center of this problem are the so called botnets -- collections of infected zombie machines (bots) controlled by the botmaster to perpetrate malicious activities and massive attacks. Some recent botnets are composed of millions of infected machines, making use of this attack vector inevitably harmfully. Hence, it is paramount to detect, analyze and shutdown such overlay networks before they become active. Research on botnet activity is mostly related to detection and disruption. Detection of botnets has focused on monitoring bot activities, especially during the spread of malicious software to infect new hosts (initial infection phase) and the communication messages exchanged between bots and botmasters (rallying and updating phases). Some behavioral aspects are common: bots have to signal the botmaster informing they are alive, each time their hosts are started; bots send messages whenever connecting and joining with the botnet; the botmaster has to send commands to each zombie machine before initiating malicious activities. This special issue of Computer Networks is intended to foster the dissemination of high quality research in all aspects regarding botnet activity, detection and countermeasures. The objective of this special issue is to publish papers presenting detection algorithms, traffic monitoring and identification, protocols and architectures, as well as botnet modeling, behavior, simulation, statistics, dissemination, analysis, preventive procedures and possible countermeasures. Tahrir is more like freenet - but for short bursts of text that degrade in utility as they get older, rather than for larger slightly more permanent data as freenet does now. As for using Java, I did initially think Tahrir was going to be rewritten in Swarm ( http://blog.locut.us/2008/10/07/swarm-a-true-distributed-programming-langua… )- I asked Ian if that was why he'd not been updating the code so much recently. [tor-talk] Orbot Data Overhead

I made a blog post <https://guardianproject.info/2012/06/20/orbot-data-tax/> on the Guardian site about the data cost incurred by Orbot usage. It generally seems quite manageable for most use cases. Running in the backround 24/7 for 30 days does incur ~200MB of idle usage which would be significant for mobile users with smaller data plans. Check out the post for more details. The initial problem is how to explain the disparate consequences of seemingly similar triggering events. Thus, in 2005, the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published cartoons featuring the Muslim Prophet Muhammad, prompting widespread protests. In 2006, by contrast, the Pope gave a lecture in which he made comments about Islam that were considered derogatory by some, but the ensuing controversy quickly faded away. "While each event appeared at the outset to have the potential to trigger significant protests, the 'Danish cartoons' incident ultimately led to substantial Muslim mobilization, including massive protests and considerable violence, while outrage triggered by the pope lecture quickly subsided with essentially no violence," wrote Sandia authors Richard Colbaugh and Kristin Glass. "It would obviously be very useful to have the capability to distinguish these two types of reaction as early in the event lifecycle as possible." What accounts for the difference in these outcomes? The intrinsic qualities of the events are not sufficient to explain why one had disruptive consequences and the other did not. Rather, the authors say, one must factor in the mechanisms of influence by which individual responses are shaped and spread. By way of analogy, it has been shown that "it is likely to be impossible to predict movie revenues, even very roughly, based on the intrinsic information available concerning the movie" such as cast or genre, but that "it *is* possible to identify early indicators of movie success, such as temporal patterns in pre-release 'buzz', and to use these indicators to accurately predict ultimate box office revenues." The Sandia authors developed a methodology that reflects the "topological properties" of social and information networks -- including the density and hierarchy of connections among network members -- and modeled the dynamics of "social diffusion events" in which individuals exercise influence on one another. They report that their model lends itself, among other things, to "distinguishing successful mobilization and protest events, that is, mobilizations that become large and self-sustaining, from unsuccessful ones early in their lifecycle." They tested the model to predict the spread of textual memes, to distinguish between events that generated significant protest (a May 2005 Quran desecration) and those that did not (the knighting of Salman Rushdie in 2007), and to provide early warning of cyber attacks. The authors' research was sponsored by the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security, among others.
