I returned a telephone message today left on the 22 asking me to call about appearing as a witness for Jim Bell. The name Leen was cited (Robert Leen is Jim's PD). The number left, 1-800-797-6722, turned out to be the Public Defenders Office. A man who answered passed me to the US Attorney's Office, to a Jennifer Mullane, who was out, so I left a message to call me. Nobody called back so I called Robert Leen's office, and spoke to Leen. He said oh yes John Young, you're a friend of Jim Bell's. I said, no, I'm a supporter. Well, he said, I've seen an email you wrote to Jim which the government is going to use in the trial, so that is what I meant by you being a friend. The email they questioned you about in the grand jury. I said I had not written Jim any email and told the grand jury that I'd posted a message on a public list, not sent one to Jim directly. Oh, Leen said. I asked if he or Jim had arranged the call about my being a witness for Jim. He said, no, not that I'm aware of. Jim has prepared a witness list but you're not on it. But I'm not getting along with Jim so I can't be sure. You probably know that a lot of people don't get along with Jim, I didn't answer that. He said you probably were called about being a government witness, because we didn't call you. I said I had got a government subpoena already. He said that was for the grand jury, right. I said, no, another subpoena for the trial. That is what makes the call last week about being a witness for Jim curious. Leen said. I'll look into it and call you tomorrow. An hour later I got the message from Jeff about the trial being postponed a day. ---- Here's Jim's March 18 filing of a partial witness list: Comes now the Defendant, James Dalton Bell, who declares that he is effectively and unwillingly unrepresented, and that his 6th Amendment Right to Counsel has been repeatedly and intentionally violated since on or about December 1, 2000. Defendant Bell has repeatedly sent letters to the court asking for substitute counsel, and two separate motions by attorney Robert Leen have been essentially ignored since mid- December, 2000. The feds, after refusing for months to allow Jim Bell's host of motions to be filed, are now allowing them in a rush, well short of the required minimum of a month to allow trial preparation. The motions are available on the Court's web site, in TIF format, and we'll have them up in HTML/TXT this weekend. The motions show that since mid-December Jim has repeatedly asked for adequate legal representation and been repeatedly refused. In fact, almost all his motions have been denied by Judge Jack. In particular, the feds aim to prevent Jim or anybody putting discovery materials on the Internet, a goal that must be countered by all means and methods if the stuff can be liberated. Even so, Jim's motions offer vivid descriptions of what has been happening to Jim, not only since his arrest, but well before, even before his first trial, as well as events within prison and after release. If true, and the current federal abuse helps make his story plausible, the feds have been long pursuing Jim and his cohorts, using a variety of illegal methods -- for surveillance, investigation, searches, arrests, evidence tampering, abuse of the federal rules of procedure, treatment of prisoners, denial of legal rights, and more. I've been asked by Jim's current PD to appear as a witness on his behalf and welcome the opportunity to do so if I can get assurance that Jim will get legal representation much superior to what he has gotten so far. How that will mesh with the feds subponea of me as their witness remains to be seen. The feds are being super shitty in this case, moreso than in Bell 1 and with CJ. I think that is because they have been up to greater evil than ever and intend to enhance that method to intimidate dissidents and those interested in such cases. It's clear that Jim Bell is a pretext for this campaign of aggression against dissidence, a poster boy for what is to come in the way of federal law-massaging injustice. Jeff Gordon wrote me to say that to get my grand jury testimony I will need to make a motion to the magistrate in charge of the grand jury -- just in time to leave no time to make that motion and get a response before the trial. Why Robb didn't tell me that in January is now clear: the sonofabitch didn't want me to know I was being stalled by his unresponsiveness and that now surely his selective misuse of my GJ testimony. Should be an educational experience at the trial to learn what the feds got cooked up to dangle Jim as bait for other fishes. What's up with Declan's fighting his subpoena? Is the press rallying to one of their own? ACLU on the case? 60 Minutes still around? Or is the Oregonian gonna spin the terrorism all alone -- well, except for the federal government, christ with all those jihadists coming into the country, providing Libyan money to the locals as if IRA fighting the Royals.

Report on GSM security, danish ministry of it- & science

The danish minister of IT- & science Birte Weiss has delivered a report on GSM security, use of encryption and interception. The main conclusions has been posted on the parliament website at http://www.ft.dk/Samling/20001/udvbilag/FKU/Almdel_bilag202.htm The document is in danish, but the main conclusions are: Tha algorithm A5/1 has not been broken in connection with use in a GSM-system. Unauthorized interception by breaking the encryption is not practically possible. The minister says, that the decision to use only 54 bits out of the 64 bits possible, by setting the last ten bits to zero, was made with reference to COCOM export regulations. GSM Association recommends that telecom providers start implementing use of the last ten bits. The four danish cell phone providers Tele Danmark (TDC), Mobilix, Sonofon and Telia has already started implementing the use of the last ten bits. This report is built in parts on the dutch minister of defences report to the dutch parliament on Echelon-like interceptions. Yours -- EOT
