AND THE OSCAR FOR BEST PICTURE ON GOVERNMENT FAILURE GOES TO..." Steven Soderbergh's "Traffic" failed to win last night's Academy Award for Best Picture, but its sobering lessons about the War on Drugs make it Hollywood's most educational offering in years, explains economist Jeffrey Miron, research fellow at The Independent Institute, in an op-ed that appeared in yesterday's San Diego Union-Tribune, New Jersey Record, and the Orange County Register. "Although 'Traffic' did not win the Oscar for Best Picture of the Year, writes Miron, "it deserves the title of Most Important Picture of the Year." "Traffic" does not address all of the drug war's unintended consequences (no film could), but what it does address, it does so brilliantly. "Traffic" Miron argues, shows how drug prohibition causes the violence often attributed to drugs, corrupts government bureaucrats, enriches criminals at expense of the rest of society, and strains relations between races and nations. "Traffic" also shows why many law-enforcement agents come to believe that the drug war cannot be won. Given the drug war's many casualties, the cultural impact of "Traffic" may come to surpass that of two other recent movies that bust the myth of good government, William Gazecki's shocking documentary, "Waco: The Rules of Engagement" (1997) -- which led to more Congressional hearings on the Waco raid -- and Barry Levinson's prescient tragicomedy, "Wag the Dog" (1997) -- whose title has become a catch phrase for presidential slights of hand conducted with military props. If so, then perhaps the United States will begin to wean itself from its destructive addiction to the drug war. Ok, everybody can have efdtt.c.gz as their public key! Here is the algorithm: Choose a j such that 256^j is a large enough random space for you to feel secure, and factors of that order will be hard to find in a composite number. Pick a random number, R < 256^j Find q = nextprime(256^j - R) Find k = decimal representation of efdtt.c.gz Find p = nextprime(k*256^(j+1)/q) Verify that (p-1)(n-1) is relatively prime to your public exponent, if not, try a few public exponents, or start over with a new random number. Compute n=pq, this is the public key modulus. Verify that n/256^(j+1) = k in case there was a large (>256) gap in the primes. If it fails, try p=nextprime(k*256^(j+2)/q). n can be converted to hex and gunzipped to the efdtt.c source code. Go compute your private exponent d, then destroy p, q and R. Let everybody know your public key and what it can be used for ;-) Attached is a sample program to illustrate the key generation. Feed efdtt.c.gz to its standard input. For j=32 (256 bit random number), it takes about 1-1/2 minutes on my 266MHz G3. McVeigh's Former Attorney Willing to Testify Against Nichols Jones said he believes usual attorney-client privilege - which prohibits attorneys from disclosing what defendants tell them - no longer applies in the case. McVeigh had a falling-out with Jones after the 1997 federal trial and last year sought a new trial on grounds that Jones was incompetent and unethical. I got 15 filings this afternoon from Jim Bell, most of which I had downloaded from the WWA web site last week and put up over the weekend. I'll add the missing stuff. Jim writes: "Talking to Declan McCullagh a few days ago I was utterly astonished that he *had not* forwarded extra copies of my legal filings to you (or anyone else) despite my strenuous wish, and though I sent him 2 copies of most of them. It is vitally important that these be posted ASAP. I hope you can do this, or find someone who can. I assume you can put them on www.jya.com/jdbfiles.htm. They are all public now. It is extremely important." Declan and I had lunch in New York last Friday, and he mentioned that he had some Jim Bell papers he had wanted to give me. I said I had just downloaded a bunch from the court web site. He said you mean the docket. I said no, the filings, a lot of them appearing rapidly. That most had been delayed by the feds. We discussed other slime which won't be posted here, but nothing about the Bell screwing, which is verboten, especially in the place we got drunk in and told lies about our vanishing 1A status. Our personal recorders whirred silently. Declan had his camera out in the open, his recorder in the bag, not me -- the tongueless waiter's mine.
