Lucrative update

Lucrative release 4 is out. I know many people are used to seeing releases numbered like "0.000001", "0.000002", "2.0.3.0.14.657" etc. but release numbering systems are essentially arbitrary in nature so don't get excited as Lucrative goes toward version 50+. This release is a fairly minor one, but included some changes such as the client name that I wanted to get out as soon as possible. There is also a new development weblog at http://lucrative.thirdhost.com/weblog/. I went through an install with someone over IRC last night and made a blog entry summarizing the install notes. I recommend reading the notes before attempting an install. I am glad to help with an install, drop me a note at patrick(a)lfcgate.com if you have trouble. "A big stash of ricin was found in the caves of Afghanistan," says Ellen Vitetta of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, whose team developed the vaccine. "They weren't collecting it to make stew." Ricin, a natural toxin found in castor beans, is cheap and relatively easy to produce. And as it is a powder, it is easily turned into an aerosol that can be inhaled. Nor does it take much to kill someone: just 1 to 10 micrograms of ricin per kilogram of body weight. About this amount on the sharpened tip of an umbrella was enough to kill the Bulgarian dissident Georgi Markov, after an infamous attack on London's Waterloo Bridge in 1978. "You get flu-like symptoms, then suddenly you're dead," says Vitetta. "This stuff really frightens me." Fluid retention The toxin has two components. Its "B chain" binds to cells, allowing the second component, the "A chain", to enter the cell and disable the protein factories. Just a single A chain can kill a cell. The team's vaccine, which is a stripped-down version of the A chain, arose as a spin-off from Vitetta's work on ricin-based anti-cancer drugs. The idea, which many groups are working on, is to attach the A chain to antibodies that target tumour cells. In trials, however, Vitetta found that while the ricin-based drugs do kill cancer cells, patients given high doses can develop a side effect called vascular leakage. "They retain fluid, gain weight and can have organ failure," Vitetta says. To improve the anti-cancer drugs, Vitetta and her colleagues stripped out the part of the toxin that was causing vascular leakage. "Then we thought: why don't we make a vaccine by stripping out the active site, too." Army interest Of the three versions of the A chain they genetically engineered, two turned out to have the desired effect on mice. The animals survived exposure to 10 times the dose of ricin that killed unvaccinated mice. "It's cheap, simple and protects wonderfully without side effects because it's a totally inactive protein," Vitetta says. She has now applied to the National Institutes of Health for further funding to test the vaccine against aerosolised ricin and hopes eventually to test the vaccine in people. use of routing information in anti-fraud mechanisms

It seems that some anti-fraud mechanisms have evolved to use information about how a user is connected to the Internet to determine whether they are likely to be fradulent. Specifically, in my case it turns out that Paypal does not accept my debit card: "We were unable to verify this credit card through our card validation process. To proceed with checkout, please verify the information you entered is correct or try a different card." I do not have other cards, and my card works everywhere else. A little online investigation suggests that Paypal outsources its card verification process to an overzealous company called CyberSource, and there are many false positives. I suspect that in my case, the false positive is related to my use of Tor. Some of the unsealed information was previously made public in redacted form. But after negotiations with AT&T, EFF filed newly unredacted documents describing a secret, secure room in AT&T's facilities that gave the National Security Agency (NSA) direct access to customers' emails and other Internet communications. These include several internal AT&T documents that have long been available on media websites, EFF's legal arguments to the 9th Circuit, and the full declarations of whistleblower Mark Klein and of J. Scott Marcus, the former Senior Advisor for Internet Technology to the Federal Communications Commission, who bolsters and explains EFF's evidence. "This is critical evidence supporting our claim that AT&T is cooperating with the NSA in the illegal dragnet surveillance of millions of ordinary Americans," said EFF Legal Director Cindy Cohn. "This surveillance is under debate in Congress and across the nation, as well as in the courts. The public has a right to see these important documents, the declarations from our witnesses, and our legal arguments, and we are very pleased to release them." EFF filed the class-action suit against AT&T last year, accusing the telecom giant of illegally assisting in the NSA's spying on millions of ordinary Americans. The lower court allowed the case to proceed and the government has now asked the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to dismiss the case, claiming that the lawsuit could expose state secrets. EFF's newly released brief in response outlines how the case should go forward respecting both liberty and security. "The District Court rejected the government's attempt to sweep this case under the rug," said EFF Senior Staff Attorney Kurt Opsahl. "This country has a long tradition of open court proceedings, and we're pleased that as we present our case to the Court of Appeals, the millions of affected AT&T customers will be able to see our arguments and evidence and judge for themselves."
