I see there's some confusion here in this thread. First of all, my suggestions of a consumer market process is completely compatible with our current system. I'm not suggesting replacing all current forms of advertisement and Monte Carlo market placement with the more interactive model. Instead, the interactive market model is to be understood as complement to the current reactive market model. It looks like some here think the reactive market doesn't work badly enough and that the interactive market is too costly (in time and money) to justify its expansion. Is that a really justified judgment? Partially it seems to be, because the majority is probably too comfortable to participate in an interactive market, just as the majority is too comfortable to participate actively in politics (I see votes as reactive participation). However, in politics there are still a few people who are actively engaged. Why don't we see the same in a similar fashion in the economic realm? Currently it looks like there's only the binary choice between reactive market participation or owning/ working for a company which produces goods. There's not much in between. This is a vacuum which demands a serious explanation - and not just naive dismissals. There are a few possible explanations - the argument about an interactive participation costing too much time is only half of an explanation, because time is a given fixed factor - the only variable are the preferences and priorities of different persons. Here are a few options how to explain the vacuum: 1. People care more about what they DON'T want than what they actually want. 2. People don't know what they actually want, so they can't ask actively for it. 3. People really don't want anything really strongly and thus remain solely passive or reactive. 4. There are other psychological factors which are adverse to interactive markets (status quo bias for example). 5. People are simply too stupid to participate in interactive markets. 6. People are too stupid to devise practicable procedures for interactive markets. If 6. turns out to be a major factor in the true explanation of the phenomenon there's a real chance for Zero State to exploit the current situation by designing effective interactive market procedures. There are just no good places for producers and consumers to meet each other. In other words there are no good forums - and "forum" is simply the Latin word for "market". With our modern online technology the time and resource requirements for an interactive participation of consumers in the production process might be minimized drastically. Some companies start to reach out for customers on platforms like Twitter and Facebook and try to get into a real conversation with them. However, Twitter and Facebook look like very suboptimal forums for interactive markets. I'm rather looking for something that changes our production processes like Khan Academy changed our education processes. There might be a serious amount of cash behind an idea like this. What if the new interactive market process could lead to products which have 10 times higher quality while only being half as expensive? Impossible you say? When law enforcement relies on vulnerabilities in the system (be it protocols, operating systems, applications, or web sites), they are incentivized to keep it insecure. If it were secure, how would they get in? Would the FBI patch their own systems against the bugs they know about? How would they control that information across all their systems? (This is an old hackers' puzzle: if you had an OpenSSH 0day, would you patch yourself against it?) If I were a communications provider (e.g. Silent Circle), and I found that the FBI was hacking me to learn customer data... what is my recourse? To borrow from the CFAA, the FBI is certainly performing unauthorized access or exceeding authorized access to a computer system. Am I allowed to kick them out? Sue them? What if they accidently crash a system because they're crappy exploit writers? Not to jump in with both feet, but here's some possible starting text ideas for the "IT People Use Tor" section... Ahem... "IT Professionals use Tor: * To verify IP based firewall rules: A firewall may have some policies that only allow certain IP addresses or ranges. Tor can be used to verify those configurations by using an IP number outside of the company's alloted IP block. * To bypass their own security systems for sensitive professional activities: For instance, a company may have a strict policy regarding the material employees can view on the internet. A log review reveals a possible violation. Tor can be used to verify the information without an exception being put into corporate security systems. * To connect back to deployed services: A network engineer can use Tor to remotely connect back to services, without the need for an external machine and user account, as part of operational testing. * To access internet resources: Acceptable use policy for IT Staff and normal employees is usually different. Tor can allow unfettered access to the internet while leaving standard security policies in place. * To work around ISP network outages: Sometimes when an ISP is having routing or DNS problems, Tor can make internet resources available, when the actual ISP is malfunctioning. This can be invaluable is crisis situations. * The CTO is an asshat: Your CTO is a golf loving moron who hasn't spent any time in front of a computer since 1988. He bought some crappy appliance, which sits at the edge of your network, tracking your activity, while you track everyone else's activity- including his. This Mongolian Cluster Fuck never seems to end. Root Cause Analysis sessions go on for days on end. Plans are made to DDOS his Comcast cable connection, one of your assistants claims he can bed the CTOs wife, and the accounting system is missing data (really- it's the CTOs missing porn collection). In 2004, the company Roth helped found, Atmospheric Glow Technologies, won a US Air Force contract to develop a plasma actuator that could help reduce drag on the wings of drones, such as the ones the military uses. Under the contract, for which Roth was reportedly paid $6,000, he was prohibited from sharing sensitive data with foreign nationals. Despite warnings from his university's Export Control Officer, in 2006, Roth took a laptop containing sensitive plans with him on a lecture tour in China and also allowed graduate students Xin Dai of China and Sirous Nourgostar of Iran to work on the project. 'The illegal export of restricted military data represents a serious threat to national security,' says David Kris of the US Department of Justice. 'We know that foreign governments are actively seeking this information for their own military development. Today's sentence should serve as a warning to anyone who knowingly discloses restricted military data in violation of our laws.' During his trial, Roth testified that he was unaware that hiring the graduate students was a violation of his contract. 'This whole thing has not helped me, it has not helped the university,' said Roth. So, scarcity-oriented organizations are preventing information flow to other scarcity-oriented organizations using post-scarcity means (bureaucracy, computers coordinating data collection, government tax dollars raised through cooperation). But in the process they are producing artificial scarcity for everyone, because it is not clear what you can legally share is some fields. In general, stories like this have a chilling effect on cross-border cooperation. People had related stories at the SSI conferences about legal issues sharing information related to rocketry and satellites.
