In answer to the question in Exchange Issue #441,
WonderPaint gave a pretty darn good explanation of
what is going on in windows. He suggests Linux.
My question is can the current software on my machine
use Linux if I were to switch to that OS and if not, how
much software is available for Linux. Seems all I find is
for windows and some for the mac. Thanks.

Hello Nicety,
I have to agree with Jim Shofstall, http://www.wonderpaint.com,
when he wrote in Exchange Issue #441:
<snip>
One major problem is that many programs don't release memory
when you exit. When working in Windoze I've always taken the
approach of rebooting on a regular basis before I've had problems,
</snip>
I believe AOL is a shell that sits on Windows, which pretty much
negates any hope for stability. *nix is the only non-Mac answer
for reliable computing. I am a Red Hat Linux user as everyone's
favourite Redmond OS obviously requires more smarts than I
have to make it do anything useful.
If you have to live with it however there is a cool little FREE
download called FreeMem which you can get here;
http://www.meikel.com
This utility frees up memory at a click when you exit an app, you
also get to see how your memory gets eaten up and not released.
This may not fix your problem but at least Windows will be
running at peak performance all the time and much easier than
constant rebooting. The more you use this OS the more of these
little third party fixer upper proggys and utilities you have to
search for.

SITE REVIEWED!
Comments on Site #141: http://www.floridarental.co.uk
Carol Hall

~~~~
Just finished looking over your site. It's very flashy and maybe
just a tad overdone. I had difficulty finding my way around
your site and couldn't understand its purpose until I had gone
three pages into it. Maybe it would be a little more useful to
make your front page navigation a little less confusing?
The "next page" tab is right next to one that says "bookmark
this page" - no information until you mouseover the tab to
tell you you are entering the site. I felt a little overwhelmed
with glitz - animated gif's overemphasized words etc and not
enough information on your openning page.
~~~~
I also surprised to see a site for Florida rentals with a URL
ending with .uk. Recommendations for this site.
1. On the home page a person's eyes are drawn first to the
animation and red text on the yellow background, missing
the first sentence. Remove the animation and add more
details to this important introduction. Instead of using the
'click here' button, just have a text link following directly
after the introduction.
2. On the second page, have all your links the same color,
and all your text a different color. Don't confuse people on
what is a link and what they need to read. Underlined text
on the internet can often be confused for a link, expecially
when it is in the normal blue link color. Having the
important links in red and with the flashing arrow is overkill.
3. On the rest of the site, you have good information, but
you don't need the top menu bar when using the framed
menu and the pages are all untitled.
I hope you don't think I'm being too harsh, I just know you
want the best site you can have and I think these changes
will make a world of difference. Once a person gets into the
site you have the information organized and complete. I
even wanted to come and stay!
~~~~
The animations make this site look amateurish from the
beginning. The flashing "Bookmark This Site" makes me
want to leave instead of come back! The font Comic Sans
MS also looks very kiddy. Much could be done to improve
this site.
~~~~
I was confused by this site. There are four animated gifs on the
first screen, and so my eyes kept flicking back and forth between
them. I read over the paragraph of information, but didn't know
where to click. I finally figured out the 'click here' button should
have been up by the text and that is where I should go.
On the 2nd page, again too many flashing gifs. Other than that,
the 2nd page was much easier to find my way around. One
suggestion, if you're using frames it is unneccessary to have
the menu of links listed both on one frame and at the top of
the page as was shown on the 'special offers' page.
The font style and bright colors made the site look casual and
laid back, like a trip to Florida should be, so that was good.
Besides the flashing gifs, by the time I left I liked this site, but
if I hadn't been reviewing it I don't know if I would have gotten
that far.
~~~~
This site is bright and breezy. It is very clean, easy to read
and navigate. Logically presented and information-rich.
Some pages had too many animated images for my own taste,
but the pages are happy and cheery. Tip: If you can get a hold
of PaintShop Pro, you can take out the white squares that
form a background for some images.
<p>Just finished looking over your site. It's very flashy and maybe
<br>just a tad overdone. I had difficulty finding my way around
<br>your site and couldn't understand its purpose until I had gone
<br>three pages into it. Maybe it would be a little more useful to
<br>make your front page navigation a little less confusing?
<p>The "next page" tab is right next to one that says "bookmark
<br>this page" - no information until you mouseover the tab to
<br>tell you you are entering the site. I felt a little overwhelmed
<br>with glitz - animated gif's overemphasized words etc and not
<br>enough information on your openning page.
<br>~~~~
<p>I also surprised to see a site for Florida rentals with a URL
<br>ending with .uk. Recommendations for this site.
<br>1. On the home page a person's eyes are drawn first to the
<br>animation and red text on the yellow background, missing
<br>the first sentence. Remove the animation and add more
<br>details to this important introduction. Instead of using the
<br>'click here' button, just have a text link following directly
<br>after the introduction.
<br>2. On the second page, have all your links the same color,
<br>and all your text a different color. Don't confuse people on
<br>what is a link and what they need to read. Underlined text
<br>on the internet can often be confused for a link, expecially
<br>when it is in the normal blue link color. Having the
<br>important links in red and with the flashing arrow is overkill.
<br>3. On the rest of the site, you have good information, but
<br>you don't need the top menu bar when using the framed
<br>menu and the pages are all untitled.
<p>I hope you don't think I'm being too harsh, I just know you
<br>want the best site you can have and I think these changes
<br>will make a world of difference. Once a person gets into the
<br>site you have the information organized and complete. I
<br>even wanted to come and stay!
<br>~~~~
<p>The animations make this site look amateurish from the
<br>beginning. The flashing "Bookmark This Site" makes me
<br>want to leave instead of come back! The font Comic Sans
<br>MS also looks very kiddy. Much could be done to improve
<br>this site.
<br>~~~~
<p>I was confused by this site. There are four animated gifs on the
<br>first screen, and so my eyes kept flicking back and forth between
<br>them. I read over the paragraph of information, but didn't know
<br>where to click. I finally figured out the 'click here' button should
<br>have been up by the text and that is where I should go.
<p>On the 2nd page, again too many flashing gifs. Other than that,
<br>the 2nd page was much easier to find my way around. One
<br>suggestion, if you're using frames it is unneccessary to have
<br>the menu of links listed both on one frame and at the top of
<br>the page as was shown on the 'special offers' page.
<p>The font style and bright colors made the site look casual and
<br>laid back, like a trip to Florida should be, so that was good.
<br>Besides the flashing gifs, by the time I left I liked this site, but
<br>if I hadn't been reviewing it I don't know if I would have gotten
<br>that far.
<br>~~~~
<p>This site is bright and breezy. It is very clean, easy to read
<br>and navigate. Logically presented and information-rich.
<br>Some pages had too many animated images for my own taste,
<br>but the pages are happy and cheery. Tip: If you can get a hold
<br>of PaintShop Pro, you can take out the white squares that
<br>form a background for some images.
In answer to the question in Exchange Issue #441,
WonderPaint gave a pretty darn good explanation of
what is going on in windows. He suggests Linux.
My question is can the current software on my machine
use Linux if I were to switch to that OS and if not, how
much software is available for Linux. Seems all I find is
for windows and some for the mac. Thanks.
Computer freezing and a program to free up memory
Hello Nicety,
I have to agree with Jim Shofstall, http://www.wonderpaint.com,
when he wrote in Exchange Issue #441:
<snip>
One major problem is that many programs don't release memory
when you exit. When working in Windoze I've always taken the
approach of rebooting on a regular basis before I've had problems,
</snip>
I believe AOL is a shell that sits on Windows, which pretty much
negates any hope for stability. *nix is the only non-Mac answer
for reliable computing. I am a Red Hat Linux user as everyone's
favourite Redmond OS obviously requires more smarts than I
have to make it do anything useful.
If you have to live with it however there is a cool little FREE
download called FreeMem which you can get here;
http://www.meikel.com
This utility frees up memory at a click when you exit an app, you
also get to see how your memory gets eaten up and not released.
This may not fix your problem but at least Windows will be
running at peak performance all the time and much easier than
constant rebooting. The more you use this OS the more of these
little third party fixer upper proggys and utilities you have to
search for.
<br>~~~~
<p>Just finished looking over your site. It's very flashy and maybe
<br>just a tad overdone. I had difficulty finding my way around
<br>your site and couldn't understand its purpose until I had gone
<br>three pages into it. Maybe it would be a little more useful to
<br>make your front page navigation a little less confusing?
<p>The "next page" tab is right next to one that says "bookmark
<br>this page" - no information until you mouseover the tab to
<br>tell you you are entering the site. I felt a little overwhelmed
<br>with glitz - animated gif's overemphasized words etc and not
<br>enough information on your openning page.
<br>~~~~
<p>I also surprised to see a site for Florida rentals with a URL
<br>ending with .uk. Recommendations for this site.
<br>1. On the home page a person's eyes are drawn first to the
<br>animation and red text on the yellow background, missing
<br>the first sentence. Remove the animation and add more
<br>details to this important introduction. Instead of using the
<br>'click here' button, just have a text link following directly
<br>after the introduction.
<br>2. On the second page, have all your links the same color,
<br>and all your text a different color. Don't confuse people on
<br>what is a link and what they need to read. Underlined text
<br>on the internet can often be confused for a link, expecially
<br>when it is in the normal blue link color. Having the
<br>important links in red and with the flashing arrow is overkill.
<br>3. On the rest of the site, you have good information, but
<br>you don't need the top menu bar when using the framed
<br>menu and the pages are all untitled.
<p>I hope you don't think I'm being too harsh, I just know you
<br>want the best site you can have and I think these changes
<br>will make a world of difference. Once a person gets into the
<br>site you have the information organized and complete. I
<br>even wanted to come and stay!
<br>~~~~
<p>The animations make this site look amateurish from the
<br>beginning. The flashing "Bookmark This Site" makes me
<br>want to leave instead of come back! The font Comic Sans
<br>MS also looks very kiddy. Much could be done to improve
<br>this site.
<br>~~~~
<p>I was confused by this site. There are four animated gifs on the
<br>first screen, and so my eyes kept flicking back and forth between
<br>them. I read over the paragraph of information, but didn't know
<br>where to click. I finally figured out the 'click here' button should
<br>have been up by the text and that is where I should go.
<p>On the 2nd page, again too many flashing gifs. Other than that,
<br>the 2nd page was much easier to find my way around. One
<br>suggestion, if you're using frames it is unneccessary to have
<br>the menu of links listed both on one frame and at the top of
<br>the page as was shown on the 'special offers' page.
<p>The font style and bright colors made the site look casual and
<br>laid back, like a trip to Florida should be, so that was good.
<br>Besides the flashing gifs, by the time I left I liked this site, but
<br>if I hadn't been reviewing it I don't know if I would have gotten
<br>that far.
<br>~~~~
<p>This site is bright and breezy. It is very clean, easy to read
<br>and navigate. Logically presented and information-rich.
<br>Some pages had too many animated images for my own taste,
<br>but the pages are happy and cheery. Tip: If you can get a hold
<br>of PaintShop Pro, you can take out the white squares that
<br>form a background for some images.
<slips on audio engineer hat>
If I had a nickel for every client who came in my studio asking the
same question...
The human voice has an amazing range in frequency and in dB. It's one
of the most versatile instruments ever. The subtleties are amazing
when combining guttural sounds with sibilance and resonance, as well as
air flow and labial manipulation (which you probably understand being a
DDS). This presents a great difficulty when trying to do what you've
just asked.
For example, in television and radio, you have an effective frequency
range of about 15kHz which is more than sufficient for the human voice.
However, you're limited to 20dB of dynamic range. This isn't a
problem if your speaker is doing a Ben Stein (Bueller? Bueller?)
impression. On a cassette tape, you have about 40-50dB, and on 16 bit
PCM digital audio, you have ~96dB (which is probably more than the room
you're recording in or listening in).
The human voice needs about 4kHz to be distinguishable from mumbling.
The "presence" of the human voice is (arguably) around 3.8kHz. If you
really want to do it right, you'll need about 12kHz to get everything
without sounding like a telephone, although that could sound a bit too
sibilant if you aren't careful. Basically, what you'll need is a
bandpass filter and an expander. Here's what they do:
Bandpass filter - Cuts off the low end below a certain frequency and
the high end off at a different frequency. You get for example, 150Hz
through 4kHz. Anything below 150Hz will be dropped and anything above
4kHz will be dropped. This should get rid of the rumble of the air
handlers down low and the rush of the air through the vents up high.
it will also sound a little muffled, but you should be able to hear
everything just fine.
Expander - Makes everything below a certain decibel level quieter. You
set a cutoff point, for example 50dB. Anything below that point will
unaffected. Everything above that point will be raised according to
the ratio you set, for example 1:2, effectively making 60dB sound like
80dB (10dB above the setting at a 1:2 ratio gives a 20dB rise).
Now, if there's a lot of noise, using these simple tools is not enough.
Many/most recording studios have a "NoNoise?" suite, or "Pro Tools?"
suite with DINR (Digidesign Intelligent Noise Reduction...pronounced
like dinner). Each of these two applications will take a sample of the
noise, and dynamically set filtering through the entire sound file to
give you a "clean" version of the file.
The software and hardware costs thousands of dollars, but it's well
worth going to a studio where they've done this type thing before.
It's not going to clean it up like you see on the spy thriller movies,
but it can clean it up a lot to make things much more audible.
IIRC, the Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole album, "Unforgettable", was
done using Sonic Solutions NoNoise?. The engineers took the old
recordings, cleaned up the noise, removed his vocal, and then recorded
her vocal. When Kenny G came to Washington DC to play on BET, his
monitor engineer came to my studio because they had
lost/broken/whatever the original CD he used to "play with" Louis
Armstrong. We loaded the song from CD, removed the saxophone at the
certain points where Kenny played the melody (using DINR), and burned a
new CD so he could play it live.
This may be a little more power than you need, but it's effectively the
same thing, and it sounds pretty good. It also took a LOT longer to do
that that it would take to clean up your recording to make it more
audible.
Now, I'll take my audio engineer hat off and get back to being a UNIX
administrator geek...
<removes audio engineer hat and goes back to his slashdot hat>
As the great Ulysses said,
negativism. Consider the lilies of the g*dd*mn field...or h*ll, look at
Delmar here as your paradigm of hope!
[Pause] Delmar: Yeah, look at me.
Okay, so maybe there's no personal rancor, but I do detect some hopeless
negativism. Or perhaps it's unwarranted optimism that crypto-utopia will be
here any moment now, flowing with milk and honey, ecash, infrastructure and
multi show zero knowledge proofs. Maybe I just need a disclaimer: "Warning:
this product favors simplicity over crypto-idealism; not for use in Utopia."
Did I mention that my code is Free and (AFAIK) unencumbered?
The reason I have separate token and cert servers is that I want to end up
with a client cert that can be used in unmodified browsers and servers. The
certs don't have to have personal information in them, but with indirection
we cheaply get the ability to enfore some sort of structure on the certs.
Plus, I spent as much time as it took me to write *both releases of nym*
just trying to get ahold of the actual digest in an X.509 cert that needs to
be signed by the CA (in order to have the token server sign that instead of
a random token). That would have eliminated the separate token/cert steps,
but required a really hideous issuing process and produced signatures whose
form the CA could have no control over. (Clients could get signatures on
IOUs, delegated CA certs, whatever.)
(Side note to Steve Bellovin: having once again abandoned mortal combat with
X.509, I retract my comment about the system not being broken...)
Sure, there's no reason for one entity not to run all three services; we're
only talking about 2 CGI scripts and a web proxy anyway. Or, run a CA which
serves multiple token servers, and issues certs with extensions specifying
what kinds of tokens were "spent" to obtain the cert. Then web servers get
articulated limiting from a single CA's certs.
It buys not having to strap hacked-up code onto your web browser or server.
Run the perl scripts once to get the cert, then use it with any browser and
any server that knows about the CA.
Great, you guys work up an RFC, then an IETF draft, then some Idemix code
with all the ZK proofs. In the meantime, I'll be setting up my 349 lines of
perl/shell code for whoever wants to use it. Whoops, I forgot the
IP-rationing code; 373 lines.
Actually, if all you want is complaint-free certifications, that's easy to
put in the proxy; just make it serve up different identifiers each time and
keep a table of which IDs map to which client certs. Makes it harder for
the wikipedia admins to see patterns of abuse, though. They'd have to
report each incident and let the proxy admin decide when the threshold is
reached.
There's that hopeless negativism again. Do you want a real solution or not?
Because I can think of at least 2 ways to solve that problem in a practical
setting, and that's assuming that your assumption about MediaWiki being
limited to 4-byte identifiers is even correct.
Sure. I always meant for the gateway to exit on a public IP address. The
reason to make it a hidden service is to keep n00bs from forgetting to turn
on tor when they talk to the proxy. Thanks for clarifying, though.
With the way most residential routers are set up, and the way in which most
privacy-preserving software leaves the ugly details of traversing a NAT to
the user, I can think of only a few ways I would benefit from
having a freedombox. That is-- I can't think of a single instance where routing
around the most common ISP obstacles (like not wanting me to run a globally-
reachable service from my home, throttling, etc.) would be made easier by
introducing another piece of hardware into the mix.
However, I would still like to use the Freedombox for three inter-related purposes.
In order of immediate importance for potential users, they are:
1) As a foolproof, turn-key solution for low risk, private browsing and data retention.
2) As an introduction to f2f identities, and chat that is end-to-end encrypted.
3) As a physical metaphor for seriousness about control over one's data.
#1 is the most important because it is the only use case for which the
Freedombox offers a unique solution that _doesn't_ depend on potential
users understanding the dangers of online surveillance vis a vis Google,
Facebook, and others. Even those who are perfectly happy expressing
a large part of their social lives on Facebook have a need/desire for privacy
in _some_ domain. For one who lacks any knowledge whatsoever of privacy
issues, this domain is probably pornography. With limited knowledge it is
pornography and career-sensitive data. And so on up the ladder until we
arrive at complex technical and philosophical issues of privacy and data
control for which members of this list are quite familiar.
Basically I'm talking about Freedombox as a machine on which the user runs
Vidalia or the Tor Browser Bundle (not exactly sure how that would work), plus
some encrypted storage. As far as I know, these are the only pieces of
peer-reviewed, actively maintained software for which the user can simply click
an icon and have the privacy-preserving service "just work". The benefit of
running it on a separate piece of hardware is small, but the benefit exists (ease
of mind knowing that any data stored from private browsing or anything else
is encrypted, without having to follow an online tutorial). More importantly, that
benefit exists and is meaningful to the user whether the data itself is frivolous or
potentially life-altering.
#2 is secondary because there really isn't a benefit to the user who has no
understanding of the importance of online privacy. It's also questionable whether
this is even important to users with an above-average understanding of privacy
issues. I see an enormous amount of data shared _publicly_ on Diaspora by
people who left Facebook ostensibly because of its privacy issues, for example.
It's not clear to me that such users would understand the importance of
developing a bottom-up system of peer-to-peer trust themselves, rather than
just having their data housed unencrypted on a server and making it available to
the public.
There is the future benefit of being able to backup data with your friends' Freedomboxes.
But that presupposes a critical mass of online activity happening through the Freedbombox
rather than the current centralized services being used.
#3 Is probably most important as an explanatory technique. Here's a block of hardware.
This is your data vault. Get seven of your friends to run one and you've got an encrypted
backup. Put it where it's safe, and that's where it stays. (I think this is how Eben Moglen
originally described it.)
Anyway, as I see it this is the only set of uses that doesn't exclude 99% of the population
from actually wanting to buy a box, plug it in, and get to work on it. Everything else is great
_if_ one already understands about privacy and freedom; unfortunately, most people do not, and
I'd rather they find out through software updates that add a feature to the box they are
already using for _some_purpose, or by a friend programming it to route around the govt's filters,
than by yet more of their data getting leaked, or picked through for potential profit, or harassment.
In answer to the question in Exchange Issue #441,
WonderPaint gave a pretty darn good explanation of
what is going on in windows. He suggests Linux.
My question is can the current software on my machine
use Linux if I were to switch to that OS and if not, how
much software is available for Linux. Seems all I find is
for windows and some for the mac. Thanks.
Computer freezing and a program to free up memory
Hello Nicety,
I have to agree with Jim Shofstall, http://www.wonderpaint.com,
when he wrote in Exchange Issue #441:
<snip>
One major problem is that many programs don't release memory
when you exit. When working in Windoze I've always taken the
approach of rebooting on a regular basis before I've had problems,
</snip>
I believe AOL is a shell that sits on Windows, which pretty much
negates any hope for stability. *nix is the only non-Mac answer
for reliable computing. I am a Red Hat Linux user as everyone's
favourite Redmond OS obviously requires more smarts than I
have to make it do anything useful.
If you have to live with it however there is a cool little FREE
download called FreeMem which you can get here;
http://www.meikel.com
This utility frees up memory at a click when you exit an app, you
also get to see how your memory gets eaten up and not released.
This may not fix your problem but at least Windows will be
running at peak performance all the time and much easier than
constant rebooting. The more you use this OS the more of these
little third party fixer upper proggys and utilities you have to
search for.
HTH. Tony.
SITE REVIEWED!
Comments on Site #141: http://www.floridarental.co.uk
Just finished looking over your site. It's very flashy and maybe
just a tad overdone. I had difficulty finding my way around
your site and couldn't understand its purpose until I had gone
three pages into it. Maybe it would be a little more useful to
make your front page navigation a little less confusing?
The "next page" tab is right next to one that says "bookmark
this page" - no information until you mouseover the tab to
tell you you are entering the site. I felt a little overwhelmed
with glitz - animated gif's overemphasized words etc and not
enough information on your openning page.
~~~~
~~~~
The animations make this site look amateurish from the
beginning. The flashing "Bookmark This Site" makes me
want to leave instead of come back! The font Comic Sans
MS also looks very kiddy. Much could be done to improve
this site.
~~~~
Besides the flashing gifs, by the time I left I liked this site, but
if I hadn't been reviewing it I don't know if I would have gotten
that far.
~~~~
This site is bright and breezy. It is very clean, easy to read
and navigate. Logically presented and information-rich.
Some pages had too many animated images for my own taste,
but the pages are happy and cheery. Tip: If you can get a hold
of PaintShop Pro, you can take out the white squares that
form a background for some images.
<p>In answer to the question in Exchange Issue #441,
<br>WonderPaint gave a pretty darn good explanation of
<br>what is going on in windows. He suggests Linux.
<p>My question is can the current software on my machine
<br>use Linux if I were to switch to that OS and if not, how
<p><b>ANSWERS:</b>
<p>From: Anthony Lloyd-Rees - cutter(a)opalsinthebag.com
<br>Subject: Computer freezing and a program to free up memory
<p>>From: NICETY7078(a)aol.com
<br>>Subject: What can I do about my computer freezing? (Issue #439)
<br>>
<br>>My computer freezes when I use AOL and sometimes when
<br>>I'm just using the basic functions of Windows 98. My
<br>>defragmentor keeps starting over and over and my scan
<br>>disk never finds anything wrong, but there has to be.
<p>Hello Nicety,
<p>I have to agree with Jim Shofstall, http://www.wonderpaint.com,
<br>when he wrote in Exchange Issue #441:
<p><snip>
<br> One major problem is that many programs don't release memory
<br>when you exit. When working in Windoze I've always taken the
<br>approach of rebooting on a regular basis before I've had problems,
<br></snip>
<p>I believe AOL is a shell that sits on Windows, which pretty much
<br>negates any hope for stability. *nix is the only non-Mac answer
<br>for reliable computing. I am a Red Hat Linux user as everyone's
<br>favourite Redmond OS obviously requires more smarts than I
<br>have to make it do anything useful.
<p>If you have to live with it however there is a cool little FREE
<br>download called FreeMem which you can get here;
<br><a href="http://www.meikel.com">http://www.meikel.com</a><a href="http://www.meikel.com"></a>
<p>This utility frees up memory at a click when you exit an app, you
<br>also get to see how your memory gets eaten up and not released.
<br>This may not fix your problem but at least Windows will be
<br>running at peak performance all the time and much easier than
<br>constant rebooting. The more you use this OS the more of these
<br>little third party fixer upper proggys and utilities you have to
<br>search for.
<p>HTH. Tony.
