Basically, a way to get around NAT and other router issues for a peer-to-peer system, mostly seamlessly integrated as a special network driver. Systems connect to a back end server which relays traffic between peers on named private networks. Sort of P2P meets VPN -- if they added HTTPS tunneling, it would run through nearly any corporate firewall/proxy server. No magic, as far as I can tell, but apparently a decent piece of work. I like the named private network capability in principle. Server nodes track client's locations and provide mediation services required for establishing direct peer-to-peer tunnels between client nodes. When the client is activated, it establishes TCP connection to one of the mediation servers and starts speaking Hamachi protocol to log itself in and synchronize with other clients. The rest of the document deals with security provisions of this protocol, which ensure both privacy and authentication of client-server and client-client communications. Client Identity A Hamachi client is identified by its Hamachi network addresses. The address is assigned the first time the client connects to the mediation servers and it stays the same for as long as client's account exists in the system. The client also generates an RSA key pair, which is used for authentication purposes during login sequence. The public key is passed to the server once - during the first connection when creating new account. To perform regular login, the client submits its identity and uses private key to sign server's challange as described below. The server verifies the signature and this authenticates the client. Server Identity Each Hamachi server owns an RSA keypair. The public key is distributed with client's installation package and thus it is known to the client prior to the first contact. When the client connects to the server, it announces which identity he expects the server to have. If the server has requested identity, the login sequence commences. In the last message of this sequence the server sends a signature of client's data and this confirms server's identity to the client. Message Security The first thing that happens after the client connects to the server is a key exchange. This exchange produces keying material used for encrypting and authenticating all other protocol messages. Messages are encrypted with symmetric cipher algorithm and authenticated with MAC. Every message is also uniquely numbered to prevent replay attacks. Crypto Suite Crypto suite specifies exact algorithms and their parameters used for performing key exchange, key derivation and message encryption. Default crypto suite is defined as follows - DH group - 2048-bit MODP group from RFC 3526 Message encryption - AES-256-CBC using ESP-style padding Message authentication - 96-bit version of HMAC-SHA1 Protocol Details HELO Client connects to the server and sends HELO message: HELO CryptoSuite ServerKfp Ni Gi CryptoSuite is 1 for default crypto suite, ServerKfp is OpenSSH-style fingerprint of expected server public key, Ni and Gi are client's 1024-bit nonce and public DH exponent. If the server has a public key that matches ServerKfp, it replies with: HELO OK Nr Gr where Nr and Gr are server's nonce and public DH exponent. KEYMAT At this point both server and client can compute shared DH secret and generate keying material as follows - KEYMAT = T1 | T2 | T3 | ... T1 = prf (K, Ni | Nr | 0x01) T2 = prf (K, T1 | Ni | Nr | 0x02) T3 = prf (K, T2 | Ni | Nr | 0x03) ... where K is a shared DH secret, and prf is HMAC-SHA1. All subsequent protocol messages are encrypted with the Ke key and authenticated using the Ka key. Ke and Ka are taken from KEYMAT. In case of default crypto suite Ke uses first 256 bits of KEYMAT, and Ka - next 160 bits. Message Protection Prior to encrypting protocol message the sender pads it to the size of cipher block (16 bytes with default crypto suite) using ESP padding. The message is then encrypted and prepended with a message ID, which is a monotonically increasing 32 bit number. As the last step HMAC is generated over the whole message (ID and encrypted data), appended at the end and the message is sent out. Above message protection scheme is consistent with those employed by TLS, IKE/IPsec. AUTH The client logs into the system by sending AUTH message: AUTH Identity Signature(Ni | Nr | Gi | Gr, Kp_cli) where Identity is client's 32-bit Hamachi address and Signature is a concatenation of nonces and public DH exponents encrypted with client's private key. The server uses Id to locate client's account, obtains its public key and verifies the signature. If the signature is correct, the server replies with: AUTH OK Signature(Nr | Ni | Gr | Gi, Kp_srv) where Signature is created using server's private key that matches ServerKfp from HELO message. Peer to peer traffic When two Hamachi clients start talking to each other, they employ the same message protection as when talking to the server. Currently clients do not perform the key exchange of their own, they use keying material provided by the server instead. This keying mechanism is used on temporary basis and will only be available during beta testing. Fortunately the morning was quickly filled with a flurry of calls from Kevin's friend, other interested parties, the usual business calls and making preparations for the inevitable knock on the door. But nobody came. Then just after noon, Niles, who's wife, Rachelle, manages the Liberty Dollar Fulfillment Office, called to tell me that Rachelle had been picked up by the FBI at the LD Office and was due to be arraigned in just a few hours! The FBI strikes again! Luckily, I was able to talk to Rachelle via her cell phone while the FBI was holding her. I was pleased that the FBI agents were the friendly professional types and afforded Rachelle and I quite a few minutes of private conversation. Under the circumstances, Rachelle's demeanor and resolve was right on target. And very quickly, I learned that a warrant had been issued for my arrest. And just a quickly, Rachelle was off to court to be arraigned. Much later in the afternoon, I learned to my surprise that three big FBI agents had arrested Sarah at work. She and Rachelle were arraigned together and quickly released to on their own recognizance (OR) before the sun set on a very eventful day for the Liberty Dollar. The quick, professional effort with Sarah and Rachelle were gratifying and encouraging. Unfortunately, I was to learn that Sarah lost her job because of this event. By last afternoon it was clear that the Liberty Dollar would be best served by my turning myself in to the to the US Marshals, otherwise know as 'self reporting.' After a few calls, I found myself talking to Agent Andy (aka Agent F) who was his usual friendly, chatty self. He even recognized my voice although we had only spoken twice and that was over 18 months ago. Sure enough he confirmed that a federal arrest warrant for my arrest had been issued. And after a bit of gamesmanship with Agent Andy, I agreed to report to the US Marshal's office in Fort Myers, Florida at 9:00 AM on Thursday morning as it was too late to be arraigned, plus an overnight in jail would have wrinkled by clothes :) The following morning, Thursday, June 3, 2009, I actually arrived at the Marshal's office at 8:30 due to light traffic. As the saying goes, "If you gotta do time, do federal time." Quite simply, the federal boys are better educated, better trained and have better manners. I was immediately escorted to a holding cell. After an hour or less, I met with the Pre-Trila Service rep and made it to court at 11:00 in chains and handcuffs. The female judge was businesslike and granted my request to attend my son's graduation in Physics from UCLA next week. After fingerprinting, signing a $50,000 Appearance Bond, one final meeting with the Pre-Indictment Service rep, I was free. In general, the arraignment was a pleasant affair. The US Marshals did their job with very little attitude, as they should. After all, I am self reporting, and it is for anything violent, I just want to prove that I have a right to issue my own currency and if any body chooses to use it then it is a "private contract." It is certainly not a crime. *And so it came to pass,* 2009 years after the birth of Christ, that four regular Americans have taken a stand to defend the People's right to protect themselves from a government currency that has a long and unforgiving history of stealing the people's purchasing power. This is a test of individual rights, as protected by the Tenth Amendment. It is the deciding moment that a private voluntary barter currency (PVBC) is legal in the great United States of America. Under rules announced on Tuesday, from October 24 companies will be permitted "routine access" to any business e-mail and phone call to check whether they are business-related. Patricia Hewitt, the minister for e-commerce and small business, said that proposals to force companies to obtain agreement for most monitoring from both the senders and recipients of e-mails and phone calls had been abandoned. Trade unions criticised the move, saying it gave companies carte blanche to snoop on virtually any workplace communication. Union officials vowed to use the Human Rights Act to challenge the snooping rules. Lucy Anderson, employment rights officer at the Trades Union Congress, said: "Employers should not be allowed to routinely screen e-mail and phone calls, and certainly not without consent". Ms Hewitt denied the rules would allow businesses a free hand to snoop. She said: "There are limits they must not go over, such as intercepting personal calls for unjustified scurrilous interest." The rules would give "any business following them comfort they are not in breach of the Human Rights Act or the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act [a new law on surveillance for law enforcement purposes]". It was complex balancing the needs of business with the rights of individuals in this area, Ms Hewitt said. "Because it's a complex issue, we have taken time to consult with business and I am confident the regulations will meet everybody's needs". Industry groups, which had condemned the earlier proposals as "totally impractical" and impossible to comply with, welcomed the government climbdown. Nigel Hickson, head of e-business at the Confederation of British Industry, said: "The changes are a big step forward. It is disappointing that the government did not consult business earlier as we would have liked to avoid unnecessary conflict". Lawyers pointed out that employers would have to contend with a mass of overlapping regulation on monitoring staff. The Data Protection Commissioner, a government regulator, will publish this week a draft code of practice on workplace surveillance, covering everything from e-mail monitoring to the use of CCTV cameras and drugs testing. Employers, particularly in the public sector, must also conform to the Human Rights Act. "Employers will have to juggle a lot of different provisions," said Eduardo Ustaran, a partner at Paisner & Co, a law firm. "All these changes have to be managed calmly and without panic - there's a lot of panic around." The TUC said an early union-backed legal challenge to the new rules was likely, on the basis that they breached employees' new right to privacy under the Human Rights Act. If the server has a public key that matches ServerKfp, it replies with: HELO OK Nr Gr where Nr and Gr are server's nonce and public DH exponent. KEYMAT At this point both server and client can compute shared DH secret and generate keying material as follows - KEYMAT = T1 | T2 | T3 | ... T1 = prf (K, Ni | Nr | 0x01) T2 = prf (K, T1 | Ni | Nr | 0x02) T3 = prf (K, T2 | Ni | Nr | 0x03) ... where K is a shared DH secret, and prf is HMAC-SHA1. All subsequent protocol messages are encrypted with the Ke key and authenticated using the Ka key. Ke and Ka are taken from KEYMAT. In case of default crypto suite Ke uses first 256 bits of KEYMAT, and Ka - next 160 bits. Message Protection Prior to encrypting protocol message the sender pads it to the size of cipher block (16 bytes with default crypto suite) using ESP padding. The message is then encrypted and prepended with a message ID, which is a monotonically increasing 32 bit number. As the last step HMAC is generated over the whole message (ID and encrypted data), appended at the end and the message is sent out. Above message protection scheme is consistent with those employed by TLS, IKE/IPsec. AUTH The client logs into the system by sending AUTH message: AUTH Identity Signature(Ni | Nr | Gi | Gr, Kp_cli) where Identity is client's 32-bit Hamachi address and Signature is a concatenation of nonces and public DH exponents encrypted with client's private key. The server uses Id to locate client's account, obtains its public key and verifies the signature. If the signature is correct, the server replies with: AUTH OK Signature(Nr | Ni | Gr | Gi, Kp_srv) where Signature is created using server's private key that matches ServerKfp from HELO message. Peer to peer traffic When two Hamachi clients start talking to each other, they employ the same message protection as when talking to the server. Currently clients do not perform the key exchange of their own, they use keying material provided by the server instead. This keying mechanism is used on temporary basis and will only be available during beta testing. With the way most residential routers are set up, and the way in which most privacy-preserving software leaves the ugly details of traversing a NAT to the user, I can think of only a few ways I would benefit from having a freedombox. That is-- I can't think of a single instance where routing around the most common ISP obstacles (like not wanting me to run a globally- reachable service from my home, throttling, etc.) would be made easier by introducing another piece of hardware into the mix. However, I would still like to use the Freedombox for three inter-related purposes. In order of immediate importance for potential users, they are: 1) As a foolproof, turn-key solution for low risk, private browsing and data retention. 2) As an introduction to f2f identities, and chat that is end-to-end encrypted. 3) As a physical metaphor for seriousness about control over one's data. #1 is the most important because it is the only use case for which the Freedombox offers a unique solution that _doesn't_ depend on potential users understanding the dangers of online surveillance vis a vis Google, Facebook, and others. Even those who are perfectly happy expressing a large part of their social lives on Facebook have a need/desire for privacy in _some_ domain. For one who lacks any knowledge whatsoever of privacy issues, this domain is probably pornography. With limited knowledge it is pornography and career-sensitive data. And so on up the ladder until we arrive at complex technical and philosophical issues of privacy and data control for which members of this list are quite familiar. Basically I'm talking about Freedombox as a machine on which the user runs Vidalia or the Tor Browser Bundle (not exactly sure how that would work), plus some encrypted storage. As far as I know, these are the only pieces of peer-reviewed, actively maintained software for which the user can simply click an icon and have the privacy-preserving service "just work". The benefit of running it on a separate piece of hardware is small, but the benefit exists (ease of mind knowing that any data stored from private browsing or anything else is encrypted, without having to follow an online tutorial). More importantly, that benefit exists and is meaningful to the user whether the data itself is frivolous or potentially life-altering. #2 is secondary because there really isn't a benefit to the user who has no understanding of the importance of online privacy. It's also questionable whether this is even important to users with an above-average understanding of privacy issues. I see an enormous amount of data shared _publicly_ on Diaspora by people who left Facebook ostensibly because of its privacy issues, for example. It's not clear to me that such users would understand the importance of developing a bottom-up system of peer-to-peer trust themselves, rather than just having their data housed unencrypted on a server and making it available to the public. There is the future benefit of being able to backup data with your friends' Freedomboxes. But that presupposes a critical mass of online activity happening through the Freedbombox rather than the current centralized services being used. #3 Is probably most important as an explanatory technique. Here's a block of hardware. This is your data vault. Get seven of your friends to run one and you've got an encrypted backup. Put it where it's safe, and that's where it stays. (I think this is how Eben Moglen originally described it.) Anyway, as I see it this is the only set of uses that doesn't exclude 99% of the population from actually wanting to buy a box, plug it in, and get to work on it. My question is can the current software on my machine use Linux if I were to switch to that OS and if not, how much software is available for Linux. On the rest of the site, you have good information, but you don't need the top menu bar when using the framed menu and the pages are all untitled. I hope you don't think I'm being too harsh, I just know you want the best site you can have and I think these changes will make a world of difference. Once a person gets into the site you have the information organized and complete. I even wanted to come and stay! ~~~~ The animations make this site look amateurish from the beginning. The flashing "Bookmark This Site" makes me want to leave instead of come back! The font Comic Sans MS also looks very kiddy. Much could be done to improve this site. ~~~~ I was confused by this site. There are four animated gifs on the first screen, and so my eyes kept flicking back and forth between them. I read over the paragraph of information, but didn't know where to click. I finally figured out the 'click here' button should have been up by the text and that is where I should go. On the 2nd page, again too many flashing gifs. Other than that, the 2nd page was much easier to find my way around. One suggestion, if you're using frames it is unneccessary to have the menu of links listed both on one frame and at the top of the page as was shown on the 'special offers' page. The font style and bright colors made the site look casual and laid back, like a trip to Florida should be, so that was good. Besides the flashing gifs, by the time I left I liked this site, but if I hadn't been reviewing it I don't know if I would have gotten that far. ~~~~ This site is bright and breezy. I even wanted to come and stay! ~~~~ The animations make this site look amateurish from the beginning.  The flashing "Bookmark This Site" makes me want to leave instead of come back!  The font Comic Sans MS also looks very kiddy.  Much could be done to improve this site. ~~~~ I was confused by this site. There are four animated gifs on the first screen, and so my eyes kept flicking back and forth between them. I read over the paragraph of information, but didn't know where to click. I finally figured out the 'click here' button should have been up by the text and that is where I should go. On the 2nd page, again too many flashing gifs.  Other than that, the 2nd page was much easier to find my way around. One suggestion, if you're using frames it is unneccessary to have the menu of links listed both on one frame and at the top of the page as was shown on the 'special offers' page. The font style and bright colors made the site look casual and laid back, like a trip to Florida should be, so that was good. Besides the flashing gifs, by the time I left I liked this site, but if I hadn't been reviewing it I don't know if I would have gotten that far. ~~~~ This site is bright and breezy. It is very clean, easy to read and navigate. Logically presented and information-rich. Some pages had too many animated images for my own taste, but the pages are happy and cheery.
