Spying Leak Dave, Lest we forget what this is about: George W. Bush illegally ordered NSA to spy on US citizens. This is a felony, for which I (and many other former and current NSA employees) hope to see him impeached and jailed. As as former SIGINT analyst, I -and anyone else ever associated with NSA- know that USSID 18 prohibits the spying on United States Persons. This is NSA's Prime Directive, Ten Commandments, and Bill of Rights, all rolled into one. It is an unlawful order to direct NSA to eavesdrop on US citizens. It is impossible for me to stress strongly enough that from day one, every human associated with NSA has USSID 18 drilled into him. With USSID 18, NSA is able to protect and defend our country. Without USSID 18, NSA can be used to oppress the American populace. It comes as no surprise to me that, in the face of an unlawful order, someone went to the papers with the story. The exception to the rule of course, is the FISA courts. President Bush declined to use these courts despite the ability to get a FISA warrant three days after the fact. Hi. After over a year it's about time that I announced an arm release so here it is! What's new since August of 2009 [1], you ask? Lots. The project has been under very active development, continuing to add usability improvements to make relay operation nicer and less error prone. If you're really curious what I've been up to this last year then it's all available in the change log [2]. For those unfamiliar, arm is a terminal monitor for Tor relays and, to a growing extent, end users. It provides: * resource usage (bandwidth, cpu, and memory usage) * general relaying information (nickname, fingerprint, flags, or/dir/controlports) * event log with optional regex filtering and deduplication * connections correlated against tor's consensus data (ip, connection types, relay details, etc) * an editor to quickly alter Tor's configuration * torrc configuration file with syntax highlighting and validation and quite a bit more via a curses interface. For screenshots and downloads visit: http://www.atagar.com/arm/ Peter and I are currently working on getting its debs in shape so hopefully this'll soon be available via repositories for Debian and Ubuntu too. RPM builds are available, though I don't have a test system so beware: there be dragons (possibly). If there's any python hackers out there interested in dabbling in a bit of Tor UI development, then I'd love to have some company. Suggestions, bug reports and feedback are also be very welcome. Hello All, This year Roger Dingledine of the Tor Project and I will be chairing the 2nd Workshop on Free and Open Communications on the Internet (FOCI), in conjunction with the USENIX Security Symposium, on the 6th of August in Bellevue, WA. FOCI aims to bring together a community of researchers working on all aspects of internet censorship. In addition to computer science research, we are particularly keen to expand on the interdisciplinary approach taken by the first workshop, and so are actively seeking submissions from social and political sciences, law, economics, activism, and any other field that can contribute to the discussion. [liberationtech] Fighting over-zealous investigators (Re: Petition to remove DA Ortiz)

There is also a petition to remove Assistant U.S. Attorney Steve Heymann for his heavy-handed tactics.[1] In addition to Aaron Swartz, he also led the case against Jonathan James, who tragically passed away at age 24. Two weeks after his home was raided by Heymann's team. I know that there is insistence to not vilify these people, but they must be shown that they are not above reproach. These tactics are not only ineffective, they are designed precisely to make life harder for people. Jonathan James proclaimed his innocence until the day he died, but was denied his day in court because of harsh treatment and the history of fiercely one-sided conspiracy cases. I am absolutely *sick* of seeing the best minds of my generation being put through the spin cycle by overzealous investigators. And I am equally sick of seeing the community shy away from them when that happens. When AIDS activists go to jail, they organize from within. When they get out of jail, they are supported by friends and allies and are able to continue their work. This paranoia that pervades our community hinders people who might want to organize effectively -- which is exactly the point. Do not think for a moment that this is not intentional. Some of the most successful companies in America have been founded by hackers, and yet the climate is such that legal activities like cryptography, anonymity, or high-level computer science make people nervous. Why is that something we've been putting up with? So yes, sign these petitions, but also write letters in support of your stance. Call people. Send faxes. Talk to the media. Hold vigils. Make trouble. Do not let these people take away your rights of protest and intellectual curiosity.
