Dave, Transatlantic news again on passenger name records. Less than four hours ago [UTC 10:30] a sweeping majority of European members of parliament strongly condemned the new transatlantic treaty the EU council is to sign with the DHS. Originally there were two resolutions: A joint resolution of the liberal, socialdemocrat, green and leftist fractions in the EU parliament, highly critical of the treaty. The conservatives had a resolution of their own, a pretty weak one, supported only by the fraction UEN [right wing catholics, populists, ex-faschists etc. ] Shortly before the vote the conservatives withdrew their resolution and decided to vote with the majority. Even the "vote by name" procedure was dropped, close to 90 percent of the MEPs raised their hands in consent - to thrash EU Commissioner Franco Frattini who is to close that deal with the DHS. According to EU rules the parliament is in this case only being consulted because the Council of [national] Ministers decides on foreign and security policy. Such a large majority in parliament - a pretty rare case - against an undertaking of the EU Commission/Council usually _never_ goes unnoticed by the latter. MEPs of all major parties - from right to left - I talked to all expressed more or less the same: "enough is enough." Enough from what? Orbot 1.0.6 has a new feature that allows someone with a rooted Android device that offers wifi or USB tethering, to route the traffic of the tethered device(s) over Tor. This means 1-5 devices connected over wifi, or just 1 device (a laptop most likely) over USB. While is definitely a feature that has a cool factor to it and will get some attention, I want to make sure we have thought through the risks/downsides of utilizing this feature, so that we can communicate them in any blogs, websites or tutorials. I also wonder if similar thoughts or documentation has been created within the TorRouter context. For example, Bob's iPad connects to Alice's Android's Tor-fied Wifi connection, and uses all sorts of non-https apps that leak enough information about Bob (google map location data), that reveals Alice's real-life location. I keep saying this is no different than TorRouter in terms of risk profile, but am I wrong? The US government's moves to impose totalitarian control in the last year (secret trials, enemies lists, massive domestic surveillance) are what some of the more paranoid among us have been expecting for years. I was particularly amused by last week's comments from the Administration that it'll be too hard to retrain the moral FBI agents who are so careful of our civil rights -- so we'll need a new domestic-spying agency that will have no compunctions about violating our civil rights and wasting our money by spying on innocent people. While there's plenty of fodder for argument among the details, the overall thrust of the effort seems pretty clear. Now's a great time to deploy good working encryption, everywhere you can. Next month or next year may be too late. And even honest ISPs, banks, airlines (hah), etc, may be forced by law or by secret pressure to act as government spies. Make your security work end-to-end. The data retention directive says: A large amount of traffic data from telephone networks and the internet must be stored by network operators now for a period of up to two years.The timing depends on national decision. England, France, Ireland, Poland and Sweden have all in all shown their least respect to privacy and the rights of the individual being. In some EU countries with strong data protection laws like Germany there has been fierce and ongoing opposition. Chambers of commerce, ISPAs and About 10.000 people already have signed in to challenge the upcoming German data retention law for violating the German constitution. Most interesting ... Meanwhile, here in Amsterdam I have been meeting with various groups and talking with people, and I think we are now MUCH closer to being able to make a mesh device that will do the ad-hoc WiFi *and* support external radio modules, e.g., in other ISM bands in the countries where they are allowed, to facilitate links of 100m - 1500m between the mesh helper devices. As the device would do ad-hoc and the other communications, and be a 1st class member of the mesh, it will be able to carry traffic for nearby mobile phones, which would just be WiFi clients of it. This means we can finally get rid of root, and also really easily port to other platforms, including perhaps by having an HTML client that is served from a web server on the device itself. I am thinking of using the Dragrove as the basis, as it is an OpenWRT-based router that already has an Arduino-compatible interface inside, and all the software tools to talk to the Arduino-compatible interface written and included. This means all we really need to do is make the working ISM radio interface for it. Paul.
