[cryptography] DKIM: Who cares?

Steven Bellovin recently forwarded the following link to another list: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2012/10/dkim-vulnerability-widespread/all/ In summary, it turns out that what seems like half the world's DKIM users are using toy keys as short as 384 bits. This isn't just Joe's Pizza and Panelbeating, it's a worldwide who's-who of big-site DKIM users all using weak keys. Does anyone know why they all do this? Since it's so widespread, my guess is that the organisations involved don't really care about it and are just going through the motions, "we're doing this for form's sake and because not doing so would look bad, not because we believe it adds anything worthwhile". Lucrative update

Lucrative release 4 is out. I know many people are used to seeing releases numbered like "0.000001", "0.000002", "2.0.3.0.14.657" etc. but release numbering systems are essentially arbitrary in nature so don't get excited as Lucrative goes toward version 50+. This release is a fairly minor one, but included some changes such as the client name that I wanted to get out as soon as possible. There is also a new development weblog at http://lucrative.thirdhost.com/weblog/. I went through an install with someone over IRC last night and made a blog entry summarizing the install notes. I recommend reading the notes before attempting an install. I am glad to help with an install, drop me a note at patrick(a)lfcgate.com if you have trouble. You missed the old standby - the microwave oven. The disk remains physically intact (at least after the 5 seconds or so I've tried), but a great deal of pretty arcing occurs in the conductive data layer. Where the arcs travel, the data layer is vapourized. The end result is an otherwise intact disk in which the data layer is broken up into small intact islands surrounded by clear channels. It might be interesting to try a longer burn, in which case you might also want to put a glass of water in with the disk(s) to preserve the microwave's electronics. This is probably less effective than the other methods you've described, but its very fast and leaves no noxious residues. It also uses a very commonly available tool. I've been sitting on the domains for a while, but they're not really doing anyone any good like that. So, rather than just letting them expire and be snapped up by link farms, I thought I could do something more useful for the community - auction them off and donate the money to the FSF and FSFE. The 5 domain names are: keyservers.net keyservers.org (I don't own keyservers.com - it's parked by someone with advertising links on it) keysigners.com keysigners.net keysigners.org I figured a two-week auction period would do it, but if someone feels strongly that isn't enough time, let me know. The basic idea is that people can send me their bids for each domain name, and I will post the current high bids (without identifying the bidder) on http://www.jabberwocky.com/domain-auction.html After the auction is over, I will notify the high bidder for each domain that they are the winner. The auction winner is responsible for sending the winning bid directly to the FSF or FSFE (winner's choice). An easy way to do this is via Paypal to donate(a)fsf.org or paypal(a)fsfeurope.org, but other means are available if necessary. Once the FSF or FSFE confirms to me the donation has arrived, the auction winner and I can do the usual domain name transfer process. Any questions or comments? You missed the old standby - the microwave oven. The disk remains physically intact (at least after the 5 seconds or so I've tried), but a great deal of pretty arcing occurs in the conductive data layer. Where the arcs travel, the data layer is vapourized. The end result is an otherwise intact disk in which the data layer is broken up into small intact islands surrounded by clear channels. It might be interesting to try a longer burn, in which case you might also want to put a glass of water in with the disk(s) to preserve the microwave's electronics. This is probably less effective than the other methods you've described, but its very fast and leaves no noxious residues. It also uses a very commonly available tool. Attempting to shred some 45 million items as quickly as possible, the agents fed page after page into shredding machines. The equipment quickly jammed, leaving the agents to tear up the materials by hand and throw them into garbage bags meant to be incinerated. But with East Germany quickly falling into the hands of the west, the agents were stopped before they could burn the shreds. Some 600 million pieces in 16,000 bags became the property of the current German government. They have remained, for the most part, in that state. Then, in May 2007, the German government revealed the world's most sophisticated pattern-recognition machine, the $8.5 million dollar (U.S.) E-Puzzler, which can digitally put back together even the most finely shredded papers. Developed in Berlin by the Fraunhofer Institute of Production Facilities and Construction Technology, the E-puzzler is a computerized conveyor belt that runs shards of shredded and torn paper through a digital scanner. Scanning up to 10,000 shreds at once, the machine links them together by their colour, typeface, outline, shape and texture not unlike how the average human might try to piece together a puzzle. The machine then displays a digital image of the original document on a computer screen. "The task to automatically reconstruct 16,250 bags full of torn documents using a technical system . . . presents an enormous technological challenge," says Bertram Nickolay, the lead inventor of the machine. During the Cold War, East Germany's Ministry for State Security STASI was regarded as one of the most formidable secret police forces of its day. Using a vast network of civilian informants, the STASI kept files on up to 6 million of East Germany's 16 million citizens through an estimated 400,000 informants from all walks of life. For decades, neighbours spied on neighbours, priests spied on their flocks, husbands spied on their wives and even children spied on their parents. They reported their discoveries to the 90,000 STASI agents keeping tabs on the population. Prior to the creation of the E-puzzler, a team of 15 Germans had laboriously been putting the pieces together by hand. But they managed to rebuild only 10,000 documents from 300 bags during 12 years. The German government estimated it would take a further 600 to 800 years to finish the job. But having uncovered heartbreaking stories of espionage like that of Vera Lengsfeld, a 54-year old German politician who was shocked to learn she had been spied on by her husband for 11 years the German public demanded the files be put together more quickly. An estimated 3.4 million Germans have officially requested to see the information the STASI gathered on them. With the E-puzzler, Nickolay says the government will be able to un-shred the remaining documents by 2013. Nickolay acknowledges his machine's importance in helping millions of Germans to piece together their former lives. But says his machine is even more significant to the rest of the world. In addition to piecing together shreds of paper, the machine has been used by Chinese archaeologists to reconstruct smashed Terracotta warriors found in the tomb of Emperor Qin. And the equipment has deciphered barely-legible lists of Nazi concentration camp victims.
