Lucrative update

Lucrative release 4 is out. I know many people are used to seeing releases numbered like "0.000001", "0.000002", "2.0.3.0.14.657" etc. but release numbering systems are essentially arbitrary in nature so don't get excited as Lucrative goes toward version 50+. This release is a fairly minor one, but included some changes such as the client name that I wanted to get out as soon as possible. There is also a new development weblog at http://lucrative.thirdhost.com/weblog/. I went through an install with someone over IRC last night and made a blog entry summarizing the install notes. I recommend reading the notes before attempting an install. I am glad to help with an install, drop me a note at patrick(a)lfcgate.com if you have trouble. Some documentation on the various entities in the Lucrative system is now available on the website, http://lucrative.thirdhost.com/documentation.php but more is needed and coming. WikiLeaks has posted hundreds of thousands of classified U.S. military documents about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, with the most recent trove released last weekend. After WikiLeaks' weekend publication of 400,000 documents about the Iraq war, Cryptome has been busy. Cryptome isn't the only one watching the watchers. A cottage industry based on scrutinizing WikiLeaks has sprung up in recent years. Media blog Gawker also posts information about Mr. Assange and company on the site wikileakileaks.org. He grew up in Texas but won't say exactly where, and declines to give his age. Mr. Young said he generates some material for Cryptome by filing Freedom of Information requests about WikiLeaks. On Aug. 9, he posted on the site a letter he said he sent to the Central Intelligence Agency "requesting information or records on Wikileaks.org, Julian Assange and others unknown associated with Wikileaks and its affiliates." The CIA couldn't immediately confirm receipt of the FOIA request. In the mid-1990s, Mr. Young said, he became acquainted with Mr. Assange through the "cypherpunks" movement, which united programmers, hackers and others interested in Internet privacy. The movement draws its name from the word "cipher," which means, among other things, a system of writing in secret code. Mr. Young said in 2006 Mr. Assange asked him to become the public face of WikiLeaks in the U.S., where he was supposed to register the wikileaks.org domain in his name. But a few months later Mr. Young fell out with the group, alleging that its goal of raising $5 million was excessive and that such sums "could not be needed so soon except for suspect purposes." I think the initial jump was due to the network effect of how fast the current group of adopters jumped on board and started using bitcoin. Still, this is a of course a valid point. Although, the value increase seems to have been mostly beneficial to the early adopters. But, I could see how if the system stabilized, then a new wave of adopters jumped on board, it could suddenly become very unbalanced for the initial participants if various scenarios unfold. Although, I am not sure *if* the bitcoin system would automatically inflate in an exponential way each time a new wave of participants joins the system. One real potential problem is making sure that "honest nodes" control the majority of CPU power. So far, so good. It won't be easy for anyone to spoof this system. But, if a group of people wants to intentionally attack the system, there could be problems. Sepp, this is a great point. One of the nice things about bitcoin is that it is F/LOSS, so it is ultimately fork-able. If bad decisions are made about the growth, the project could be forked, a different governance scheme could be implemented, etc. I don't yet know enough about bitcoin to be 100% sure, but the system at least for the time being does seem to have stabilized (it could simply mean that participation has stabilized). Bit coin claims: "Once a predetermined number of coins have entered circulation, the incentive can transition entirely to transaction fees and be completely inflation free." In the mid-1990s, Mr. Young said, he became acquainted with Mr. Assange through the "cypherpunks" movement, which united programmers, hackers and others interested in Internet privacy. I think the initial jump was due to the network effect of how fast the current group of adopters jumped on board and started using bitcoin. Still, this is a of course a valid point. Although, the value increase seems to have been mostly beneficial to the early adopters. But, I could see how if the system stabilized, then a new wave of adopters jumped on board, it could suddenly become very unbalanced for the initial participants if various scenarios unfold. Although, I am not sure *if* the bitcoin system would automatically inflate in an exponential way each time a new wave of participants joins the system. One real potential problem is making sure that "honest nodes" control the majority of CPU power. So far, so good. It won't be easy for anyone to spoof this system. But, if a group of people wants to intentionally attack the system, there could be problems. Sepp, this is a great point. One of the nice things about bitcoin is that it is F/LOSS, so it is ultimately fork-able. If bad decisions are made about the growth, the project could be forked, a different governance scheme could be implemented, etc. I don't yet know enough about bitcoin to be 100% sure, but the system at least for the time being does seem to have stabilized (it could simply mean that participation has stabilized). Bit coin claims: "Once a predetermined number of coins have entered circulation, the incentive can transition entirely to transaction fees and be completely inflation free." Lucrative update

Lucrative release 4 is out. I know many people are used to seeing releases numbered like "0.000001", "0.000002", "2.0.3.0.14.657" etc. but release numbering systems are essentially arbitrary in nature so don't get excited as Lucrative goes toward version 50+. This release is a fairly minor one, but included some changes such as the client name that I wanted to get out as soon as possible. There is also a new development weblog at http://lucrative.thirdhost.com/weblog/. I went through an install with someone over IRC last night and made a blog entry summarizing the install notes. I recommend reading the notes before attempting an install. I am glad to help with an install, drop me a note at patrick(a)lfcgate.com if you have trouble.
