Blood spilt in anti-war anger By DENNIS SCHULZ Wednesday 16 January 2002 When Ararat artist Geoff Todd decided to use his own blood as a painting medium, he was unprepared for the psychological result. Todd had chosen to paint in his blood to make a dramatic statement decrying Prime Minister John Howard's decision to become involved in the war in Afghanistan. But when the images began to take shape on his canvas, the blood/paint took on an intimate meaning that the artist never foresaw. "I was overcome by the fact that this was more serious than I intended," says Todd. "It has a sort of sacredness." The first of Todd's paintings, (to be catalogued as "artist's blood, acrylic medium and charcoal on canvas") are now complete, with two to be entered in the Dobell Prize for drawing at the Art Gallery of New South Wales later this year. They are works expressing the artist's outrage over the decision to commit troops to a foreign conflict. "It worries me that we were prepared to respond so aggressively, so quickly," says Todd. "I think Mr Howard's response was too quick. No one took a breath and I know that politicians at that level are allowed to take a breath." An artist of international repute, who is perhaps better known in Europe and South-East Asia than in his native Australia, Todd has never sidestepped controversy. At the opening of a 1996 Indonesian exhibition, a Todd drawing of a nude was ordered by police to be covered. The work was later shown at the Australian Embassy in Jakarta. Then, as Indonesia prepared to go to the polls in 1999, he produced a one-man show at the Museum Benteng Vredeberg in Yogyakarta depicting the turbulent life of revolutionary hero Diponegoro. Todd's work struck a chord with Indonesians who were searching for candidates of substance, epitomised by the 19th-century ascetic who nearly brought the colonial Dutch undone. The idea to use blood as a medium came to Todd, 51, while working at his studio/home in the old Terminus Hotel in Ararat. Angered by reports that the provenance of works by Aboriginal artists were being questioned by urban art dealers, Todd reasoned that the only way indigenous artists would be able to establish authorship was to provide blood samples on the back of their paintings that could then be DNA tested.MORE AT... http://theage.com.au/entertainment/2002/01/16/FFXVE7RPGWC.html

$1.2m PCs go missing By RICK WALLACE 16jan02 MORE than 500 notebook computers were lost or stolen from federal government agencies in the past year. The lost computers, some of which contain sensitive government documents, will cost taxpayers $1.2 million And bureaucrats seem to have few clues about where they went. Just two convictions have been recorded over their disappearance. And with several large departments, including the tax office and defence, yet to report losses the toll could climb higher. Telstra headed the lists of worst offenders for computer losses with 357. The telecommunications giant lost 170 to carelessness and 187 to theft, costing $645,000. But its performance was better than the year before, when it lost 1000. The CSIRO, Australia Post and the Family and Community Services Department were among the other leading losers. Along with taxpayers' money, the losses have also seen top-level government secrets lost. A notebook computer that vanished from the Department of Industry and Resources contained a Cabinet document. Another that disappeared from the Prime Minister's department contained a report from the Auditor-General. Agencies that re sponded to the questions also lost another $332,000 in desktop computers and electronic equipment.

Rude remarks out of order By KELLY RYAN 16jan02 A WAYWARD weighing machine that told a woman "get off fat pig" has been hastily removed from a busy shopping centre. Red-faced operators pulled the plug on the renegade scales after furious complaints about offensive comments it added to personal weight details. The coin-operated scales are programmed simply to print a person's height, weight and body mass details. One man was stunned to read "Fat c---" at the bottom of his ticket. The Body Weight machine, one of about 20 in Melbourne, was removed from the Greensborough Plaza yesterday. Bruce Hamilton weighed himself on Sunday, concerned he was carrying some extra Christmas padding. The machine told him his weight was up slightly to 79kg. But his wife noticed the message on the bottom of the ticket. "I was more worried about my weight than the message," the Greensborough father-of-two said yesterday. "But it is a public facility and some people could have been devastated and deeply offended by it." Supplier Ian Sargent said he believed only one weight machine had been maliciously tampered with. Mr Sargent, who admitted to "a couple of new love handles since Christmas", said he would have been offended by the message. Normally, tickets carry nice messages such as "Happy Christmas" or "Happy New Year". Technicians have now changed a password that allows access to a hidden keypad within the machines. Mr Sargent described the episode as a "cruel practical joke".
