Although I have misgivings about the stability of bitcoin, I support its use. (It's the only thing out there that is completely de-linked from official currencies and from things like precious metals, that is workable for more than just local exchange). To explain my perplexity on bitcoin stability, I quote from the site cyclonite linked: "How much is a Bitcoin worth? More all the time... As you can see, over a 4 week period, recently... The value of `8?1.00 BTC (one Bitcoin), went from US$0.06 to US$0.50 ...within only about 4 weeks. Yes... That was an 833% increase in it's value. Wow." (http://www.bitcoinme.com/) For me, a currency that is to be widely used, should be stable. Stable means it doesn't go down in value, but it also doesn't go up in value excessively. It should be roughly keeping its value. Going up as much as bitcoin evidently does, is a form of instability that will bring disturbance to a marketplace using bitcoin as its means of exchange. This instability could and should be remedied by adjusting the target total of bitcoin creation with an algorithm that takes into account the number of active bitcoin users. As the number of users increases, the total target amount of bitcoins to be created (which currently is fixed at 21,000,000) should increase, slowly creeping up to accomodate the demand of new users for bitcoins, in a way to keep the value of one single coin roughly stable. I do not know whether the creators of bitcoin would be willing to do this. For me, such an adjustment will be necessary to take bitcoin from experimental status to widely-used alternative means of payment status. So, as far as recreational pharma product is concerned, this is typical of these things (if that is what it is). E.g., SSL certificates early revenue was also porn, Paypal had some dodgy customers, and for e-gold, it was ponzis / games that pushed the business into the black. The challenge is what to do next, how to grow up. This is going to be practically impossible for BitCoin because it has no guiding hand like e.g., Paypal had. It's only got the invisible hand, which suits the innovators fine ... but it also means it hasn't got much of a chance of going mainstream. Ah well. I joined bitcoin quite early, seeing it as like donating spare cycles to an interesting experiment. I ended up with quite a substantial balance, at no cost that I can identify. Now I find I can exchange a little over five bitcoins for a #50 Amazon gift certificate that Amazon seems happy to credit to my account. I quite see the force of the critical comments made here; but they remind me of a (probably apocryphal) remark attributed to the late Garret Fitzgerald when Prime Minister of Ireland. After a new scheme had been outlined to his cabinet, and greeted with enthusiasm by several ministers, he remarked, "Well, it's all very well in practice; but will it work in theory?" The scientific community, and particularly the Complex Systems community, should respond by providing new insights tools and approaches informing policy, preparation and action. In particular, international terrorism, pandemics, and natural disasters are leading to a broad need for strategies to address national and international security. The science of complex systems, including network analysis, agent simulations, and new approaches to systems engineering, provide a basis for better identification and prioritization of challenges, developing strategies for addressing them, and executing the strategies that are developed. The huge investments that are currently underway and planned in these areas should be guided by complex systems ideas. We are planning multiple sessions on the topic of Homeland and International Security at the International Conference on Complex Systems. So lesson #1 is that early groups are risking punishment. Same story for DVD. These products/people/chains kept the industry alive while it built up steam for the mainstream. Lesson #2 -- you need these strange uncomfortable groups to get to where you want to get. Later on, as more mainstream comes into play, these strange uncomfortable groups can be eased out. Or they go somewhere else, or we change our minds about them. We also write them out of history... So, as far as recreational pharma product is concerned, this is typical of these things (if that is what it is). E.g., SSL certificates early revenue was also porn, Paypal had some dodgy customers, and for e-gold, it was ponzis / games that pushed the business into the black. The challenge is what to do next, how to grow up. This is going to be practically impossible for BitCoin because it has no guiding hand like e.g., Paypal had. It's only got the invisible hand, which suits the innovators fine ... but it also means it hasn't got much of a chance of going mainstream. Ah well. I joined bitcoin quite early, seeing it as like donating spare cycles to an interesting experiment. I ended up with quite a substantial balance, at no cost that I can identify. Now I find I can exchange a little over five bitcoins for a #50 Amazon gift certificate that Amazon seems happy to credit to my account. I quite see the force of the critical comments made here; but they remind me of a (probably apocryphal) remark attributed to the late Garret Fitzgerald when Prime Minister of Ireland. After a new scheme had been outlined to his cabinet, and greeted with enthusiasm by several ministers, he remarked, "Well, it's all very well in practice; but will it work in theory?" Did anybody catch the bit from the Daily Show last night w/ the Cheney interview --- "in his secret lair?" Dude, WTF? He looked like he was in some kind of darkened mad scientist's lab prepping for doomsday. Seriously, the room was full of all this unidentifiable and slightly ominous-looking (in half-second glimpses) equipment, and was lit like the set where Luke fights the Emperor. Bizarre stuff. I always thought the sets for the Pres and friends in 24 were kind of bizarre, but apparently our upper echelon's real digs are even weirder. (Aside: great bit from JS last night, where he cuts directly from claims Cheney made about not saying something to footage that directly contradicts this. Fucking liars. I'd have a lot more respect for them if they respected their public's intelligence more themselves.) Well, not content to merely be in the undisclosed location, apparently he's gunning to be removed from essential public documents as well.
