US Seeks Access to More Internet Data Without Court Order

"The Washington Post reports that the Obama administration is seeking to make it easier for the FBI to obtain internet records of users without a court order. If Congress approves the plan, the FBI would be able to secretly issue a National Security Letter to an internet provider and obtain who users send email to, the times and dates of e-mails sent and received, and possibly a log of every website visited. Hi Len, Maybe one question we should consider is whether a leaks clearinghouse needs to look like a website at all. From the little I've read about OpenLeaks - and if anyone knows better, please correct me - it sounds like they're not planning to publish documents, as WikiLeaks does; rather, they're planning to build some kind of infrastructure for whistleblowers to communicate anonymously with journalists, to negotiate time-limited exclusive access to documents in return for help with preparing and publishing them. If we consider that kind of model rather than robust hosting, I guess the issues would include: * How do whistleblowers and journalists securely obtain the client software? * What kind of architecture does the anonymising network have? Can it be monitored end-to-end? Can it be DoSed? * Who contributes resources to the network? Do they need to be trustworthy, or can it be an open system? * Can attackers fill the system with fake whistleblowers to make it annoying for journalists to use? * Can attackers fill the system with fake journalists to make it annoying/dangerous for whistleblowers to use? * What's the legal status of such a system? Can it enjoy the protections given to journalists if it's seen as "just a tool"? Although graphics can slow a page down some, it makes the reader want to read. So add some well placed graphics and maybe some pullquotes. Definitely focused and sounds like a great business to be in. The only things I could suggest is to have testimonials from current distributors and information about how long you have been in business. ~~~~ Great colour and layout consistent throughout the whole site, with easy to follow text. As I noted in <a href="http://lists.elistx.com/archives/interesting-people/200509/msg00122.html"> a recent IP posting</a>, eBay's purchase of the popular Skype VoIP service (now official) leads to new concerns over the proprietary nature of Skype's security and encryption systems, which will now be under the control of an extremely large and powerful corporate entity. For eBay and Skype to have a chance of maintaining the goodwill and trust of Skype users, I call on Skype to forthwith release the specifications and implementation details of Skype's encryption and related technologies.
