But, I also could not figure out the focus of this site, so keep that in mind while reading my suggestions. At the top of the page is said "Flame's Hearth II" which leaves me to assume there is a page "I" - if so, link to it. There was no introduction, explaining what I would get out of scrolling down through the site, so in effect, no reason for me to see more than what I could in the first screen area. There was a lot of blank space between the categories, which makes the page seem longer. And explanations by the links telling me why those were your favorite pages, or what links were brand new would have been helpful. Maybe date the free sample links. ~~~~ Kind of a neat page of freebies. Not too cluttered. Liked it. ~~~~ First Impression: BLAND, Seems obvious that Lauri is very new at this and is using a cookie cutter web-builder. Well, Lauri I am still pretty green behind the ears myself and need the cookie cutters, too. If your web-builder allows you variety in color, fonts, adding pictures etc, play around and bring excitement into this site. I am not really sure what you expect the results to be for your site? Purpose? for example: I have this site to share free stuff as a means to get visitors so I can then offer other stuff which I am selling. If that is the case, instead of leading with your favorite sites (which are not all that exciting either), why not do a site which gets traffic because your main emphasis is on the FREE stuff? Or on what ever your site's purpose is. Your website address is pretty iffy. You could benefit from a domain name here. Lauri, I am not putting you down, I congratulate you for taking the step. That is how we learn. Just play with it, look for tools, ask others how they do it, etc., and over time you'll get okay at that. The more sites you review yourself, the better you will get. Also, consider to find a local kid (they are so good at that stuff) who can be hired for a few dollars to help you. My children did my www.prosperouswomen.com site, artwork and all. I hope this helps you. ~~~~ I liked the layout of the site - it was easy to read but it wasn't very inviting. I think it needs more colours and perhaps some graphics or even small promotional banners down the right side. ~~~~ This looks like a first attempt for someone building a web page, and is missing some basic and necessary information to be viewed by more than family and friends. If LaurieGal wants to get traffic to her site she needs to add meta tags and specific keywords, contact information, and some wording that shows personality or uniqueness. The links are good links, and specializing in finding free products to order off the internet is a good idea, but there are a million sites that do this. An introduction or personal comments about each product or link would be helpful and set this site apart. The colors are easy to view, the layout clean and easy to scroll through, but this site doesn't have any personality. ~~~~ Nice simple design, soft colors. Hello Steve, Take heart, you are not alone... sometimes conflicts can arise due to the programs you have installed on your computer.  I had the exact same problem with the time displayed on my taskbar. I was running Windows 98 and Norton AntiVirus 2000.  I downloaded a fix and I've been cured - this was over a year ago.  From memory, it was from the Symantec Norton AntiVirus site (see second URL below). There are a couple of things you can try: Windows Clock on Taskbar and in Date/Time Tool Loses Time <a href="http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q189/7/06.ASP">http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q189/7/06.ASP</a> System clock loses time when using Norton AntiVirus 2000 (cut & paste the link on one line) <a href="http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/df0a595864594c86852567ac006360…">http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/df0a595864594c86852567ac006360…</a> <a href="http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/df0a595864594c86852567ac006360…">0473528ab04a4365882567fd00760e7c?OpenDocument</a> I have also come across defrag starting over and over again in a never-ending cycle with the message: "Drive's contents changed; restarting..." ScanDisk and Defrag require that the hard disk not be accessed while they are running.  Every time the hard disk is accessed, these programs will be restarted.  To stop the hard disk being accessed, make sure all programs and background processes are closed.  You can do this by accessing the Task Manager (Ctr+Alt+Del) and selecting each item, then clicking on End Task.   NOTE: Make sure you let Explorer (in the Task Manager) continue running. Also disable your screen saver and unplug USB devices. Then, run ScanDisk and Defrag.  This is for people with serious ScanDisk and Defrag difficulties. For me, it was not necessary to take such drastic action. By disabling screen saver, both processes were completed without a hitch. To put it shortly, they have an interesting methodology, but I do not trust any one of their conclusions, as far as the caching in P2P file-sharing network is concerned. All their reasonings should be repeated for the reliable network statistical data, and with the set of requirements that reflects the needs of P2P users, not the need for a six nines-reliable data storage. Death by DMCA By: Fred von Lohmann and Wendy Seltzer IEEE Spectrum June 2006 A flood of legislation released by the passage of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act threatens to drown whole classes of consumer electronics In 1998, U.S. entertainment companies persuaded Congress to make dramatic changes in its copyright code by passing the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The DMCA gave copyright holders new rights to control the way people use copyrighted material and new protection for technologies designed to restrict access or copying. The movie and record companies argued they needed these new restrictions to fight increased piracy threats in the digital era. In the eight years since the DMCA's passage, however, piracy has not decreased, and hurdles to lawful uses of media have risen. The Motion Picture Association (MPA), the international arm of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), estimated worldwide losses because of piracy to be US $2.2 billion in 1997 and $3.5 billion annually in 2002, 2003, and 2004. Meanwhile, entire consumer electronics categories have been wiped from retail shelves. If three or four years ago you didn't buy a digital video recorder that automatically skips commercials, you're out of luck; that feature is not in such products today. Television executives brought litigation that bankrupted the company offering DVRs with these user-friendly features, because skipping commercials potentially undermines their ability to sell commercial time. You're likewise out of luck if you're looking to buy software that lets you copy a DVD onto your laptop's hard drive; it's no longer for sale, at least not in the United States. Even if you want to put the movie you bought onto a pocket-size video and game console, such as Sony's PlayStation Portable, which allows users to watch video stored on flash memory or a miniature hard drive, you can't legally do so, because you'd have to "rip," or decode, it to make the transfer-and the studios claim that this action violates the DMCA. When you rip a CD, be it to an audiotape or an MP3 file, you're not breaking any laws. But to rip a DVD you need to somehow get around the encryption technology built into a standard disc, and since such circumvention is forbidden by the DMCA, if you rip a DVD, you are breaking a law. Under the DMCA, legality doesn't depend on how the copy will be used but rather on the means by which the digital content is copied. Now, in an even more vexing situation, U.S. entertainment companies are successfully spreading the copyright code changes established by the DMCA around the world. Laws similar to the DMCA now exist in Japan, Australia, and much of Europe. At least nine additional countries, including Chile, Guatemala, and Singapore have also been pressured to enact DMCA-like laws as part of a devil's bargain with U.S. trade negotiators, who say the copyright change is necessary to secure free trade pacts with the United States that would govern all sorts of commerce. And in Europe, the body charged with defining the European digital television standards is mixing in content-protection obligations, responding yet again to pressure from major U.S. movie studios. Emboldened by their successes, U.S. entertainment companies are pushing for another wave of even more restrictive legislation. "Broadcast flag" legislation could require that all consumer electronics devices recognize protected television broadcasts and potentially refuse to copy them; a so-called "radio flag" bill would prevent or restrict the manufacture of hard disk recorders for digital radio; and an "analog hole" closure would restrict the connections new digital devices can make with analog devices. But the review reaffirmed the value of the so-called Talon reporting system on potential threats to Pentagon personnel or facilities by international terrorists, said Bryan Whitman, a senior Pentagon spokesman. He said the Pentagon was putting in place new safeguards and oversight intended to prevent improper information from going in the database. Whitman said "less than 2 percent" of the more than 13,000 database entries provided through the Talon system "should not have been there or should have been removed at a certain point in time." Whitman disputed critics' assertions that the program amounted to Pentagon domestic spying, although he declined to state the nature of these entries or the people they involved, saying the database's contents are classified. Whitman stressed that to be properly placed in the database, a threat must have a suspected link to international terrorism. Under the Talon system, Defense Department civilian and military personnel are asked to report on activities they deem suspicious. These reports go in the Cornerstone database, handled by a Pentagon agency called the Counterintelligence Field Activity, or CIFA. The review was ordered in December by Stephen Cambone, under secretary of defense for intelligence, after revelations that the database included information on U.S. citizens including peace activists and others who did not represent a genuine security threat. 'SUSPICIOUS' NBC News and defense analyst William Arkin disclosed at the time a sample of the database containing reports of 1,519 "suspicious incidents" between July 2004 and May 2005, including activities by antiwar and anti-military protesters. This included a military intelligence unit monitoring a Quaker meeting in Lake Worth, Florida, on plans to protest military recruiting in high schools. The Pentagon is legally restricted in the types of information it can gather about activities and individuals inside the United States. A memo from Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England said the Talon system "has detected international terrorist interest in specific military bases and has led to and supported counterterrorism investigations." It called the data "unfiltered and non-validated potential threat information." Whitman said data reported through Talon could be turned over the FBI or local law enforcement. The Pentagon said it will conduct annual oversight reviews of the Talon program, designate supervisors to review each Talon report before submission to the database, and direct CIFA to review submissions to ensure they are proper. Whitman said he did not know if the Pentagon had disciplined anyone for putting improper information in the database, but was "not aware of any malicious or deliberate attempts" to use the Talon system against a specific person or group. Some critics have noted similarities in the Pentagon's activities during the Iraq War and those of the Vietnam War period, when it spied on antiwar activists. It turned out to be an innocent mistake. He's still running quite a few, on the same network, but now he sets the MyFamily torrc option on them. Roger, Thanks for the quick reply and links. Although this happened over six months ago I had not seen any discussion about it. A few questions... - How did Steven Murdoch and Richard Clayton tracked down the operator? How did they determine it was an innocent mistake? Even if the operator is benevolent, that capability with so few nodes is disturbing. - How were 9 nodes apparently able to touch 11% of all Tor traffic? Have changes to the code since then reduced this vulnerability? - Do you think there needs to be activity (perhaps "collusion" between a group of good guys), similar to what's on Bit Torrent, to identify and blacklist nodes (discussions about the risks and legality of such things can be left till later)? - Is there a transcript of the talk those slides were given with, or at least a video?
