We actually evolved a culture of hacking in Pakistan during the last decade and this involved a lot of grassroots efforts: I have spent a few hours occasionally with various groups around the world. The latest was with the Hackerspace in Budapest http://hsbp.org, it was a wonderful experience. In the past I was also part of various efforts to educate activists, journalists, developers from nearly 40 countries to design advocacy campaigns using open technology. I also got the opportunity to lecture during my visit to Central European University in June this year on how to design online advocacy campaigns using simplistic open source tools. On the other hand, I have been working with multilateral institutions to impart Linux and FOSS knowledge in developing countries since 2004. I just completed two training missions to Kabul Afghanistan and Islamabad training trainers using Ubuntu Desktop, Ubuntu Server, other distributions, Open Standards, Open ICT Ecosystem, various tool kits and shared the opportunity in sustaining Freedom and Common Good offered by Open Source! I covered 35 participants/trainers from 10 organizations, govt departments, regulators and universities. Here is the link to it:http://www.facebook.com/groups/27138955736/ I very much have access to people and communities, one thing we lack is access to a physical space and lots of internet but lacking funds remains the only issue. I have funded myself nearly 10 events, campaigns, 50,000 live cds etc but its hard to sustain the effort especially in the conditions like my region but yes, the effort has been here on the ground for quite some time now. In the west, there are just so many small and easy ways to raise funds through sites like http://www.ulule.com/ and Kiva and so forth. Its not the case in regions like Pakistan. Only single faces have access to support from a particular class. We on the other hand contribute on our own as much as we can and the efforts do move on. The scarcity of non-verbal cues in digital communication facilitates deceptive mimicry, which undermines the interpersonal trust required for sensitive transactions. Open-source data from jihadi discussion forums show that distrust there is very high and direct recruitment rare. General trust also declined during the observation period (2006-2011). As of 2012, forums are still in use, but primarily for low-stake activities such as propaganda-sharing and ideological debate. Confidence in the authenticity of propaganda remains relatively high, due to vetting institutions and hard-to-fake video formats. A modicum of interpersonal trust also remains, thanks to reputation systems and a few relatively reliable signs of trustworthiness involving time expenditure. The trust problem is an Achillesb heel for terrorists online b but probably also for pro-democracy activists in authoritarian settings. master key for DNS A dirty little secret is that the late, lamented and sensible Jon Postel once demonstrated how easy it would be to take the entire Internet out of the hands of the government entirely, because in fact the decision of what the "root" is is pretty damned arbitrary. (because people who think roots and port numbers are "real" seem to fantasize about physical metaphors that create more reality than there is here, so you have to show them). I think it would still be a small project to take the roots away from the US Gov't entirely, once and for all. If they demand the key and get it with the purpose of enforcing yet another attack on collective will, I am happy to help. Nothing illegal is necessary. 99% of humanity will probably volunteer to join the new root system - both libertarian conservatives and liberal thinkers are pretty much together on this. I'm pretty sure Microsoft and Apple (and I know Linux) communities would happily substitute a new root for a "gov't censored" one - and I don't think appeals to "child molesters" and "terrorists" and other bloody shirts being waved would cause them to think twice. What might get Microsoft to play ball is a promise to stop hammering them on antitrust, but hey, they have to worry about the next administration and the one after that - companies outlive governments. And even if Microsoft didn't put the new roots in, it's really easy to distribute a root replacement add-in or to add it to the NAT boxes. So "self help" is why the government might want to think twice about sticking this screwdriver in their own eye. Yeah, as John Levine says, the ICANN may not be a very mature body, but just think what the maturity of your favorite governmental figure is like. Do you like the "liberals"? Do you like the "religious right"? Do you like the Hillary? What about the Cheney? In the matter of the DNS, we the users of the Internet hold all the power. The master key is a fantasy. Managers could be alerted when customer service reps. don't appear to be displaying an appropriate level of engagement with the customer, or when a sales associate doesn't meet the requisite level of cheeriness (although I'd guess that voice stress analysis is already doing this for telephone customer service reps). master key for DNS A dirty little secret is that the late, lamented and sensible Jon Postel once demonstrated how easy it would be to take the entire Internet out of the hands of the government entirely, because in fact the decision of what the "root" is is pretty damned arbitrary. (because people who think roots and port numbers are "real" seem to fantasize about physical metaphors that create more reality than there is here, so you have to show them). I think it would still be a small project to take the roots away from the US Gov't entirely, once and for all. If they demand the key and get it with the purpose of enforcing yet another attack on collective will, I am happy to help. Nothing illegal is necessary. 99% of humanity will probably volunteer to join the new root system - both libertarian conservatives and liberal thinkers are pretty much together on this. I'm pretty sure Microsoft and Apple (and I know Linux) communities would happily substitute a new root for a "gov't censored" one - and I don't think appeals to "child molesters" and "terrorists" and other bloody shirts being waved would cause them to think twice. What might get Microsoft to play ball is a promise to stop hammering them on antitrust, but hey, they have to worry about the next administration and the one after that - companies outlive governments. And even if Microsoft didn't put the new roots in, it's really easy to distribute a root replacement add-in or to add it to the NAT boxes. So "self help" is why the government might want to think twice about sticking this screwdriver in their own eye. Yeah, as John Levine says, the ICANN may not be a very mature body, but just think what the maturity of your favorite governmental figure is like. Do you like the "liberals"? Do you like the "religious right"? Do you like the Hillary? What about the Cheney? In the matter of the DNS, we the users of the Internet hold all the power. The master key is a fantasy.
