Effort to renew FISA bill fizzles.

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/05/28/pelosi-pulls-fisa-bill-amid-object… This COULD be excellent news. Partial quote follows: By JOHN BRESNAHAN, KYLE CHENEY, SARAH FERRIS and MARTIN MATISHAK 05/28/2020 09:42 AM EDT Updated: 05/28/2020 03:49 PM EDT - Facebook - Twitter - Link - More House Democrats have pulled a bill to reauthorize parts of the federal surveillance program known as FISA, a setback for Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s legislative machine that followed a veto threat from President Donald Trump. Pelosi announced Thursday that she would seek negotiations with Senate Republicans, a move that sends both parties back to the drafting table to resolve differences — which appeared to be minimal until Trump's threat sent Republicans dropping their support en masse. Advertisement House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell both supported the decision to begin formal negotiations between the chambers, with a McConnell spokesperson calling it "regular order." Democrats had initially resisted because it could slow down the process of passing a bill. The reversal, a rarity for Pelosi, leaves behind a political mess for both parties, with limited options unless Trump, again, changes course. Speaking to reporters Thursday, the California Democrat blasted Republicans — at the urging of Trump — for “abandoning their commitment" to national security. "This has always been bipartisan," Pelosi said at a press conference. "All of the sudden, [Republican] commitment to national security disappeared by a tweet, the twinkle of a tweet." By Thursday afternoon, the House overwhelmingly voted to go to conference with the Senate. Lawmakers also agreed on who should represent the chamber in the negotiations: Democratic Reps. Jerry Nadler (N.Y.), Adam Schiff (Calif.) and Zoe Lofgren (Calif.) and GOP Reps. Jim Jordan (Ohio) and Devin Nunes (Calif.). Negotiations between the House and Senate on the FISA bill are expected to begin quickly, though it’s unclear how long before a final bill is ready. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) announced Thursday afternoon that the chamber would not return to Washington next week. Lawmakers would receive 72-hours notice before they will need to vote, Hoyer said. The House had been expected to easily approve the FISA bill this week, with an unusual alliance of Republicans and Democrats who carried a similar version across the floor in March. The Senate passed the measure with than 80 votes in favor, including 45 Republicans. But that fragile coalition collapsed this week as Trump suddenly intervened, issuing a veto threat that seemed to contradict his own administration’s efforts to renew the law. [end of partial quote]

Resistance - Mum keeps salon open, in face of court order, gets 7 days jail - [PEACE]
by Zig the N.g 30 May '20

Ho ho muh n.ggers, this all-American mom's a legend - she publicly tore up the order served on her to close her salon, politely stood up to the judge, saying "So, sir, if you think the law’s more important than kids getting fed, then please go ahead with your decision. But I am not going to shut the salon", and got 7 days in jail for the privilege! A GoFundMe has raised $265k for her. Live your truth, peeps! If you ain't livin' it, you ain't got it. Human rights are lived. But doing so may result in jail, so advise yourself accordingly. So, sir, if you think the law’s more important than kids getting fed, then please go ahead with your decision. But I am not going to shut the salon. https://www.zerohedge.com/health/thousands-donate-gofundme-jailed-salon-own… ... Our attacks, which we validate on Zcash and Monero, enable a remote attacker to identify the P2P node of the payee of any anonymous transaction being sent into the network. This enables the adversary to link all transactions sent to a user, to recover a user's IP address from their anonymous payment address, and to link a user's diversified addresses. In addition, for Zcash, we show that an attacker can remotely crash any Zcash node for which the attacker knows a payment address, and set up a remote timing attack on an ECDH key exchange involving a victim's private viewing key. In principle, this attack can fully recover the victim's private viewing key, thereby completely breaking receiver privacy. https://www.wired.com/story/dark-web-welcome-to-video-takedown-bitcoin/ https://old.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/gofd6b/i_think_its_remarkable_that… https://twitter.com/matthew_d_green/status/1263218326282612736 'I think it’s remarkable that we’ve built a cryptocurrency where some poor schmuck can’t spend their money without everyone on Twitter knowing all the details and commenting about it.' -- Matthew Green https://decrypt.co/29799/this-is-why-xrps-price-has-been-crushed-and-is-str… Centralized wannabee cryptos are all inflating, premining, founder taxing, censoring, patenting, and governing your values down to zero... just like Fiat. Suggest large non-US tech/news outlets in English?
by Douglas Lucas 28 May '20

28 May '20

Hi cypherpunks, I sent out a bunch of queries today to news outlets, namely Slate, Salon, Vice, The Atlantic, Gizmodo, Ars Technica, Wired US, Wired UK, and Al Jazeera. To give you the general idea of the article I aim to publish, the subject line is "Freelance pitch: Open science helps Seattle activists overcome pandemic, Twitter exec order" and the open science systems are Sci-Hub and GetGee, and the Seattle activists are rentstrike, anarchist soup kitchen, etc. Can the list please recommend for pitching any non-United States tech/news outlets publishing in English that have medium to large audiences? I will check dw.com and other Germany in a few. The goal is to lodge an article into one of these venues to promote Sci-Hub and GetGee by explaining to the public how public data systems would help with coronavirus, with practical relatable examples like rentstrike, Food Not Bombs, etc. Thanks, Doug P.S. Yes, I know corporate media is bad, good job Chomsky, tell me something I don't know. P.P.S. Yes, I know you think I should use more encryption, good job incel boomer, have you considered the downsides of broadcasting for wide dissemination nothing but pure ciphertext? Last I checked, number stations have yet to convince members of the public of much of anything.

Fwd: HOPE 2020 *Revised* Call for Speakers
by Greg Newby 28 May '20

28 May '20

Perhaps of interest to some cypherpunks. The whole event will be streamed live online. Info at www.hope.net ----- Forwarded message from Hackers On Planet Earth <hope(a)2600.com> ----- Greetings, HOPE 2020 will take place online from July 25 through August 2, 2020. Hackers from all corners of the world will convene virtually for nine days of online presentations from a wide variety of sources. You can be one of them! We want as many elements of the hacker community as possible to be a part of this historic event. You too can give a talk or be part of a panel. While we all would prefer to be there in person, this provides an opportunity for anyone to share their ideas from wherever they happen to be. Simply email your talk proposal to speakers(a)hope.net. You should include a proposed title, an abstract, and a short bio for each speaker. Provide enough information so it is clear why HOPE attendees would find your topic interesting, new, and relevant. Make it clear why YOU are the right person or people to give this presentation. Most speaker/panel sessions will be allotted 40 minutes for the session, and then 10 minutes for live Q&A. If your talk is accepted, we will provide full assistance in getting it ready for your timeslot, whether you choose to pre-record or present your talk live. All types of presentations are encouraged, from solo talks to panels, debates, demonstrations, and interactive discussions. Presenters must consider the viability of their session for an entirely online presentation method. Your presentation can be made in ANY language or dialect. Please submit the abstract and biography in English, though, since that is the language that HOPE uses to communicate with presenters and attendees. If you intend to give your presentation in a language other than English, please mention this in your talk proposal. Submissions should highlight their relevance to hacking. They should be original, and not previously presented. We encourage presenters from all age groups and backgrounds. HOPE is an inclusive event, seeking civil discourse and education on all topics related to the hacker world. HOPE encourages all approaches and interpretations to hacking, presented by hackers, makers, developers, teachers, learners, and experimenters. If you have a passion for discovering how things work and sharing that knowledge, you have the hacker spirit. Some topics from past HOPE events, and new topics of interest, include: - Hacker approaches to fighting 2020's massive health and social challenges - Information, disinformation, and information literacy - Technologies, along with their benefits and risks - Social engineering - Education - Hacker culture and lifestyles - Effecting social change - Industry, government, commerce, and multinationals - Science, engineering, and math - Body modification, hacking, and enhancement - Phones, networks, and telecommunication - Hardware and software - Secrets and disclosures - Data, privacy, encryption, and policy - Outer space and beyond - How-to's / DIY (for beginners or any level) ...and much, much more All submissions will receive an automated response. (You won't get multiple responses if you email us more than once in a short period of time, but we will still get your email.) Notices of acceptance will be mailed out in the weeks ahead. Send all submissions to speakers(a)hope.net. All speakers will be given full access to the conference, which includes Q&A sessions with each presenter, a commemorative conference t-shirt that will only be given to conference attendees, and a special HOPE 2020 badge. If you want to help with coordinating this historic event, send an email to volunteers(a)hope.net. *** HOPE 2020 - July 25 to August 2, 2020 - Everywhere *** ----- End forwarded message -----
