the Expression Problem and its solutions - [PROGRAMMING]
by Zenaan Harkness 27 Oct '18

27 Oct '18

The Expression Problem is faced by all programmers who create anything other than simple programs. Represent abstractions with types, add procedures, methods or functions (choose your term) to manipulate those types, and some time later, one is invariably faced with the 2 problems: - adding new types/ classes - adding new operations/ functions This be the essence of the problem of programming abstractions. Eli Bendersky does a fine job of both laying out this "fundamental" problem of computing and the traditional approaches to solving this problem, namely: - OO programming with syntax for classes (syntactically co-located data with the operations on that data), whereby adding types is relatively straightforward (provided for syntactically); whilst adding operations requires changing function sets or "interfaces", which in general requires more than merely adding functions, impacting (undesirably) the type declarations (classes). - functional programming inverts this ease of modification aspect, since operations are the first order syntax, which thus leads the programmer to design his program with functions/ operations as primal, thus adding functions is the simple program extension mechanism just like adding data types or classes is the simple OO extension mechanism; whilst adding new data types in the functional language requires all existing functions to be (again, undesirably) modified to handle the new data type. The same "expression problem" thus manifests from either side of the programming language spectrum. Velly interdasting. Bendersky lays it out clearly, and with nice little matrix PNG images, then goes on with the (relatively, at least in C++) complex "visitor pattern" which is typically used to solve this problem in C++, using virtual multiple inheritance and dynamic type checking - not the simplicity we crave for our programming solution baskets. Enter the White Knight, Clojure, with syntax so powerful only Lisp dialects raise their heads in a collective superiority sneer. The secret? Clojure syntactically hides multiple dispatch behind reasonably elegant syntax - so the performance hit is there, but at least achieving the result is not a syntactic nightmare of virtual multiple inheritance + RTTI functionality or some ungodly template syntax. But it's actually only single dispatch? Yes, there be more lurking secrets - what Clojure calls "open methods": “Note a crucial difference between how methods are defined in C++/Java and in Clojure. In C++/Java, methods have to be part of a class and defined (or at least declared) in its body. You cannot add a method to a class without changing the class's source code. In Clojure, you can. In fact, since data types and multimethods are orthogonal entities, this is by design. Methods simply live outside types - they are first class citizens, rather than properties of types. We don't add methods to a type, we add new methods that act upon the type. This doesn't require modifying the type's code in any way (or even having access to its code).” Clojure "protocols" (from Java POV, "simple, usuall single-method Interfaces) also get a look in. Here's the source, Luke: The Expression Problem and its solutions https://eli.thegreenplace.net/2016/the-expression-problem-and-its-solutions/ Bendersky even does a second round - recommended: More thoughts on the Expression Problem in Haskell https://eli.thegreenplace.net/2018/more-thoughts-on-the-expression-problem-… So notwithstanding that Clojure runs on the JVM, note Java's first class syntactic citizens are classes (in comparison to Clojure's first class functions): java - What is a first class citizen function? - Stack Overflow https://stackoverflow.com/questions/5178068/what-is-a-first-class-citizen-f… “So, objects are the first class citizens in java. Admittedly, java8 supports passing of methods (method behavior, to be precise) to other methods using functional interfaces and lambda expressions. But that does not mean that java has functions as first class citizens.” Note that Java 8 syntactically adds "first class functions" which are represented internally/ in the JVM, as classes (perhaps this is how Clojure runs on the JVM?): Java 8: Simple Example of First-class Functions http://4dev.tech/2015/08/java-8-simple-example-of-first-class-functions/ (Observing Java's predicates and other such Lisp wanna be syntax, it's rather fugly IMEHO.) The link to Bendersky was highlighted by Stephen Mann in his this week's mailing list mailout, where he also links to his recent blog on "good names" in programming: Good Code Depends on Good Names https://stephenmann.io/post/good-code-depends-on-good-names/ I can't find his email list archives, but here's his blog index: http://stephenmann.io/

Machine Identification Code: Print Analyze Burn
by grarpamp 26 Oct '18

26 Oct '18

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_Identification_Code A Machine Identification Code (MIC), also known as printer steganography, yellow dots, tracking dots or secret dots, is a digital watermark which certain color laser printers and copiers leave on every single printed page, allowing to identify the device with which a document was printed and giving clues to the originator. Developed by Xerox and Canon in the mid-1980s, its existence became public only in 2004. In 2018, scientists developed privacy software to anonymize prints in order to support whistleblowers publishing their work.

First US quantum network.
by jim bell 26 Oct '18

26 Oct '18

https://techcrunch.com/2018/10/25/new-plans-aim-to-deploy-the-first-u-s-qua… About 800 kilometers of unused fiber optic cable running down the U.S. eastern seaboard is set to become the first stateside quantum network. The aim is to get the quantum network up and running and accepting customers by the end of the year, making it the first time that quantum keys will be exchanged commercially on U.S. soil. Quantum Xchange, a Bethesda, Maryland-based quantum communications provider, has inked a deal for Zayo, a fiber network giant, to provide the stretch of fiber from Boston to Washington, DC. Its first aim is to help connect Wall Street financiers with their back operations in nearby New Jersey, but the hope is that other industries — from healthcare to critical infrastructure — will soon use the network for their own secure communications. Quantum cryptography and networking aren’t new concepts, but have risen to prominence in recent years as both a threat to some encryption and also the savior of future secure communications. Relying on photons and the laws of quantum physics to share encryption keys over a long distance from one place to another makes it significantly harder to intercept the keys without breaking the beam or perfectly cloning a copy. This technique, known as quantum key distribution (QKD), is seen as a likely contender for the future of end-to-end encryption. Although quantum cryptography has been around for years, it’s only been recently that scientists and computer engineers have harnessed the technology for practical uses. Soon, the technology could be used for protecting elections, transmitting payments and securing communications between data centers — even from satellites back to earth. Europe has already seen some success in building a small-scale quantum network, but “shortcomings” made bringing the system to the U.S. more difficult, said Quantum Xchange chief executive John Prisco. His company uses trusted node technology that passes quantum key data from point to point over a larger distance, making it easier to scale a quantum network over wider geographical spaces. “Organizations with offices in Boston will be able to send secure communications to a partner in D.C., and eventually even further – as the goal is to keep buying up optical fiber that is already in the ground all over the country so that we can provide a secure quantum network that will serve the entire nation,” he said. Prisco said it’s “critical” to establish a quantum key distribution network as a defensive measure “before the unprecedented power of quantum computers become an offensive weapon.”

D-Wave offers the first public access to a quantum computer From Python to parallel universes
by jim bell 25 Oct '18

https://techcrunch.com/2018/10/05/d-wave-offers-the-first-public-access-to-… utside the crop of construction cranes that now dot Vancouver’s bright, downtown greenways, in a suburban business park that reminds you more of dentists and tax preparers, is a small office building belonging to D-Wave. This office — squat, angular and sun-dappled one recent cool Autumn morning — is unique in that it contains an infinite collection of parallel universes. Founded in 1999 by Geordie Rose, D-Wave worked in relative obscurity on esoteric problems associated with quantum computing. When Rose was a PhD student at the University of British Columbia, he turned in an assignment that outlined a quantum computing company. His entrepreneurship teacher at the time, Haig Farris, found the young physicists ideas compelling enough to give him $1,000 to buy a computer and a printer to type up a business plan. The company consulted with academics until 2005, when Rose and his team decided to focus on building usable quantum computers. The result, the Orion, launched in 2007, and was used to classify drug molecules and play Sodoku. The business now sells computers for up to $10 million to clients like Google, Microsoft and Northrop Grumman. “We’ve been focused on making quantum computing practical since day one. In 2010 we started offering remote cloud access to customers and today, we have 100 early applications running on our computers (70 percent of which were built in the cloud),” said CEO Vern Brownell. “Through this work, our customers have told us it takes more than just access to real quantum hardware to benefit from quantum computing. In order to build a true quantum ecosystem, millions of developers need the access and tools to get started with quantum.” Now their computers are simulating weather patterns and tsunamis, optimizing hotel ad displays, solving complex network problems and, thanks to a new, open-source platform, could help you ride the quantum wave of computer programming. [WAR] - Re: (53) Gaddafi's Prophecy, 2011 - "Europe will turn black" - YouTube

Ric Beginning of transcript: Qaddafi/ Gaddafi: “Now you people in NATO listen to me - you are bombing the wall that stopped African migration into Europe... This wall stopped the terrorists from Al-Qaeda; This wall was Libya. You are destroying it, you fools... For the many thousands of migrants from Africa, for your support of Al-Qaeda, you will burn in hell, this is how it will be. ” Until 1968, Libya was a monarchy. 70% of the population lived below the poverty line. Many were illiterate and lived in simple nomadic tents. It was a typical, underdeveloped African country. Gaddafi provided Libyans with the kind of life that made the rest of the dark continent envious. Out of a desert, arose the "8th wonder of the world" - the Great Man-Made River [world's largest irrigation project]. He was able to create a system of irrigation throughout the desert, through an underground pipe network. Factories and enterprises began working throughout Libya, none of which were there before. Not having payed a single Dinar, Libyans moved from tents into apartment blocks. "Rent" did not exist. Everything - including utilities and power was covered by the government. "If we were to compare the way cities, such as Tripoli, looked before he came to power and after ... You would see that it went from an ugly village, to a city with highrises, 30 years later." So you want to get married? The government would give newlywed couples $64,000 USD towards buying a home. $7,000 USD toward each child born. You want a car? The government will cover 50% of the cost. Petrol in Libya used to be cheaper than water - 3 cents per litre. "Minimum wages were in the thousands of dollars, education abroad was payed for by the state, and cases where medical surgeries needed to be carried out outside of Libya, the state covered that too." "But to bring lasting peace to Libya would be impossible - this land will forever be torn apart by the leaders of these various tribes." "They can't and don't want to be ruled by a single person." That's what the leaders of the superpowers said in the 1970s. Colonel Gaddafi surprised everyone. He unified 140 tribes into one country. Each of these tribes had their own leader - the options for Gaddafi was either "scare them to death" or to buy them. Gaddafi preferred the latter. He promised them a heavenly existence, and he delivered on his words. Gaddafi: “We have oil - this is what will unite us. Oil is the reason that Libya stayed as one country.” Gaddafi nationalised the oil producing industry. He promised that the huge profits would be fairly distributed across the entire country. All Libyans began to receive their share of the Libyan oil trade. "When the people can see that a certain leader is raising the standard of living, of course he will have a lot of supprot." ...

latest feminist atrocity - feminist scum attacks Cody Wilson.

Somehow I missed the last pentagon's operation. Checking the archive I see there was an obscure reference by christian fascist stormer zenaan, but unsurprisingly it was useless. so without further intro https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/19/business/cody-wilson-3d-guns-sexual-assa… 3-D Printed Gun Promoter, Cody Wilson, Is Charged With Sexual Assault of Child "Mr. Wilson, 30, is accused of having sex with a 16-year-old girl at a hotel in Austin on Aug. 15 and paying her $500 in cash" OOPS. So there wasn't any child involved. There was a 16 year, that is an adult, whore. But in the puritan, feminazi, americunt cesspool, 16 year old whores are 'children'. Now, it should be underscored that usually whores are belong to one of the most honest professions on the planet, but some whores, like this one are scum.
