mutt, neomutt, and searching emails

There are some ageing dinosauruses that still use TUIs and even the more archaic mbox "all emails in this folder in a single file" email storage, and to distressingly admit to the truly ancient practice of "grep"ing an mbox file when mutt's search feature is just so dang diddly ang dang SLOW on a 20,000+ email folder (and that's barely 4 years of cypherpunks!). What to do. Well the installation of neomutt many moons ago, which was not accompanied by any man page reading nor even a simple yandex, has not changed the search speed automatically. Mutt (/neomutt)'s "~b" email body search feature is so slow across 20k emails it's impressive, especially given the speed of grep from the command line, and the speed of opening that 20k email folder. The following thought arises: On opening an mbox folder, mutt evidently scans those 20k messages, since it numbers them uniquely, and can jump very quickly to any single email, and also can filter the subjects, senders, recipients etc using it's secret incantations for "L"imiting etc. So it at least appears that mutt indexes that mbox file by (presumably) line number, and also (again, apparently at least) caches certain of the headers of each email. If the above assumptions are correct, then searching the body of emails could be done using grep at the command line, and scanning grep's output for line numbers, and mapping that against mutt's internal mapping of the mbox. Theoretically at least, this is a relatively simple algorithm. But although it's simple, it may be too late given the existence of neomutt which probably just requires some reading, config, and learning the new commands for searching emails using whatever new whizz bang system that puts the neo into neomutt (for the lazy, that would be libnotmuch).

IQNets - low b/w end user nodes - maximise 'user experience'

End user nodes which have low or relatively low total bandwidth BW, Node End-user Low Bandwidth => NELB might usefully provide only small or "marginal" b/w links, and link contracts with reduced time T. Where the end user 'experience' arising from his available b/w is already reduced/low/frustrating, any overlay which treats that end user as anything but an "mostly end user only" node, will likely be switched off/ disabled/ uninstalled, by said end user. So for a "compelling user experience", at least with NELBs, by default we ought limit both time duration T and bandwidth BW, for all link contracts handed out to incoming requests. Low T means "problematic" (from end user experience point of view) link contracts will time out "relatively soon". Low BW, as a percentage of total NELB BW, should minimize "obtrusive slowdowns due to the overlay net", again, from the end user perspective. Some aggregate numbers of global Internet users, e.g. "how many Internet users, globally, onramp at X kbps b/w?" Presumably there are still millions who have sub 256kbps? In any case, with the limit case, at least for certain groups of users, being groups of such low b/w links, a useful overlay net must usefully use "many micro connections". We can at some point test and establish useful minimum T and minimum BW for T. To optimize for such lithe links (rather, link contracts), we need to minimize "overlay network switch contract nego" latency. So various previously listed concepts are essential at the core of the overlay net - seamless utilization of many "micro" links, link aggregation, seamless handling of links that drop out, possibly fan-out (single high BW to many low BW) and fan-in hops, etc.

So here's a looming God-tier level up for an aspiring legend in the making: Checking out the "iCEBreaker FPGA" arduino-class board via Crowd Supply (below) and in particular the HDMI Output Mod: "The iCE40UP5k FPGA on the iCEBreaker is fast enough to output 720p video! Yes my precious screen real estate, yesssss :) In particular eDP (embedded display port) includes Panel Self Refresh (PSR), and eDP version 1.4 includes "it reduces power consumption through partial-frame updates in PSR mode": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort#eDP there is absolutely no reason we cannot have arduinos and iCEBreakers powering 16k panels FTFW. Yeah baby! One immediate and oh-so-satisfying use for such a setup is a "mega universal performance status monitor", where a large 8k or 16k display monitors 1000s of mini graphs and stats for your cluster/ VMs/ disk arrays/ networks phys and virt, VLC aural density fourier, CPUs, memory etc etc. If your little computer board can only physically transmit say 49% of the pixels on the display in one second, then a full refresh of all monitored perf stats would take -exactly- 2 seconds; and more the point, a nice tiled/staggered/cycling update effect would be observed over each 2s period, with each subset of updates transmitted at the pace the little board can handle (then 'immediately' displayed by the "PSR + partial-frame update" panel) before the next block of updates is transmitted. AND, even in any low resolution such as 'merely' 4k, FullHD or lower, using PSR + "partial-frame updates" is an ideal solution for public signage, text based UIs (TUI), and of course the "mega universal status monitor" above, and where additionally, power use is reduced to an absolute minimum (scenario dependent) where updates are very rare - e.g. public signage where an update or transition might occur only every 10s.
