Tragically, we can not say the same for Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza. For them, the violence of Israel’s occupation and brutal siege – in which Palestinians are killed, imprisoned, and denied their basic human rights – is an everyday reality that generations have suffered. As Israelis grieve and search for loved ones, Palestinians are facing continued settler violence and lockdowns from the military. Many are not able to leave to harvest fields, check on relatives, or collect essentials. Meanwhile, Palestinians in Gaza live in an open air prison without freedom of movement and have nowhere to seek refuge as Israel bombs the area in collective punishment. No one deserves this and none of this was inevitable. The root cause of this violence is Israel’s decades-long oppression and displacement of Palestinians. For years, Israel has sought to normalize this reality, but there is nothing normal about this violence of dehumanization and subjugation. Israel has only been able to further its control over Palestinian life and its annexation of Palestinian land under a system of apartheid made possible by the complicity of governments around the world and unconditional military support from the US. Amid the many horrific images and stories we are seeing, hearing, and living, one thing is clear – peace will not come until the occupation ends and Palestinians are free. Second, if they blatantly ignore a large number of substantive comments the regulation will be easier to challenge in court once implemented. (And you can be certain this one will be challenged in court if it gets implemented as is, if only because it's so broad and unclear.) And third, if they get a huge amount of outcry there's a chance they realize they're on thin ice and will at least remove the worst aspects of the regulation. So please don't be complacent and defeatist. This is a moment where you can make a difference. It only takes a few minutes to send a comment in and/or call your representative. If you can explain, dispassionately and based on actual facts, why their proposal will be ineffective or counterproductive at achieving their stated goals, is outside the scope of their statutory authority (based on their actual governing legislation and judicial precedent, not hand-waiving crap just talking about the constitution), or would be in conflict with other established regulations, then they'll take it really seriously and try to either explain why they disagree or incorporate you comment into how they implement any final rule. I have 2-3 sets of memories of this newsletter, and they mismatch the records in my email. One of them involves communicating with the author and connecting them with the cypherpunks list, which I imagined they joined (years ago). It looks like the newsletter is business-oriented.
