IEEE Spectrum: Quantum Computing for Dummies. https://spectrum.ieee.org/quantum-computing-for-dummies Quantum computers may one day rapidly find solutions to problems no regular computer might ever hope to solve, but there are vanishingly few quantum programmers when compared with the number of conventional programmers in the world. Now a new beginner's guide aims to walk would-be quantum programmers through the implementation of quantum algorithms over the cloud on IBM's publicly available quantum computers. Whereas classical computers switch transistors either on or off to symbolize data as ones or zeroes, quantum computers use quantum bits, or "qubits," which because of the peculiar nature of quantum physics can exist in a state called superposition where they are both 1 and 0 at the same time. This essentially lets each qubit perform two calculations at once. The more qubits are quantum-mechanically linked, or entangled (see our explainer), within a quantum computer, the greater its computational power can grow, in an exponential fashion. Currently quantum computers are noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) platforms, meaning their qubits number up to a few hundred at most and are error-ridden as well. Still, quantum processors are widely expected to grow in terms of qubit count and quality, with the aim of achieving a quantum advantage that enables them to find the answers to problems no classical computers could ever solve. Although the field of quantum programming started in the 1990s, it has to date only drawn a small community. "Programming quantum computers may seem like a great challenge, requiring years of training in quantum mechanics and related disciplines," says the guide's senior author Andrey Lokhov, a theoretical physicist at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. "Additionally, the field is dominated by physics and algebraic notations that at times present unnecessary entry barriers for mainstream computer and mathematically trained scientists." Now, with their new guide, Lokhov and his colleagues hope their new guide will help pave the way "for the upcoming quantum computing revolution," he says. "We believe that our guide fills a missing space in the field of quantum computation, introducing non-expert computer scientists, physicists, and engineers to quantum algorithms and their implementations on real-world quantum computers." The new guide explains the basics of quantum computing and quantum programming, including quantum algorithms. "Very much like how classical algorithms describe a sequence of instructions that need to be executed on a classical computer, a quantum algorithm represents a step-by-step procedure, where each of the steps needs to be performed on a quantum computer," Lokhov says. "However, the term 'quantum algorithm' is usually reserved for algorithms that contain inherently quantum operations, such as quantum superposition or quantum entanglement, which turn out to be computationally powerful."

Many early adopters of bitcoin were more likely software and tech gurus than they were economists or libertarians, but this comment by Nakamoto was profoundly libertarian. After all, if the government can wage war on poverty, drugs, crime and terror, why can’t libertarians and Bitcoiners alike wage war on money printing? It’s hard to overstate the phrasing here: “[W]e can win a major battle in the arms race and gain a new territory of freedom.” The Libertarian Party, under new management, recognizes just how important Bitcoin is in this battle. There was no level playing field. There was no hashwar. The market did not decide. The market was not given a choice. It was fixed. Remember when Faketoshi split BCH? Even though he was a total fraud with a completely bogus motivation for causing a split only two weeks before code freeze, exchanges still gave that bozo a level playing field, renaming BCH into "BCHABC" and "BCHSV". Remember when the Taxman split BCH? Even though THE ENTIRE BCH ECOSYSTEM rejected the "miner tax" the exchanges still gave the Taxcoin a level playing field, renaming BCH to "BCHABC" and "BCHN". But when - after YEARS of debate - Bitcoin Core failed to get consensus on Segwit, and big blockers mounted a defensive UAHF, did the exchanges rename Bitcoin into "BTCORE" and "BTCASH" so that there would be a level playing field and a market decision? No. THE FIX WAS IN. So despite years of good faith efforts to reach consensus the exchanges didn't even offer the same decency to us early adopters of Bitcoin: a Peer-to-peer Electronic Cash System that they offered to an obvious scoundrel and a rogue dev who pissed off an entire ecosystem. What's the point of this? The point is simple: Now that we've seen the failure of the #Bitcoin #Segwit scaling plan and the abysmal <0.02% adoption of the #LightningNetwork it's a good time to remind everyone that the market NEVER PERFORMED BASIC PRICE DISCOVERY ON THE PLAN. In my case the IRS illegally leaked the investigation to the media, which then convicted me of crimes there was no evidence to charge me with committing. Here's another headline you won't read. Peter Schiff's bank falsely accused by the media of facilitating tax evasion and money laundering is being closed, because even though it's innocent, it's premature conviction by the media ruined its reputation and crippled it financially. Despite no evidence of crimes, Puerto Rico regulators closed my bank anyway for net capital issues, rather than allow a sale to a highly qualified buyer promising to inject capital far in excess of regulatory minimums. As a result accounts are frozen and customers may lose money. The reason regulators gave for tuning down the sale is that post sale I would own 4% of the company buying the bank. They said that due to the bad press about me, they did not want me owning 4% of a bank, even though the know first hand the allegations in the media are false. They never let me know they objected. I found out in C&D order to shut down the bank. Had they ever told the 4% stake was a problem I would have restructured the deal. I just wanted out. I had to put in $7 million in the last 2 years to cover operating losses due to bad press. Also it costs a fortune to run a small bank. That's why I never really made any money. The compliance costs are outrageous. Where are these news headlines? Peter Schiff vindicated. After a 2.5 year investigation authorities of 5 nations found absolutely no evidence that Euro Pacific Bank or Peter Schiff facilitated tax evasion or money laundering. The Atlanta #Fed lowered its Q2 GDP forecast to -1%. If they're right, all year as #Powell insisted the strong economy could easily withstand rate hikes, it was already in a #recession. Without rate cuts and QE5 the recession gets much worse. With them #inflation gets much worse. Everyone is counting on consumers to keep the #economy out of #recession. But everyone is also counting on the #Fed to successfully fight #inflation by reducing demand. Since 70% of #GDP is consumer spending, unless investment increases substantially, this necessitates recession. If @Sonnenshein really wanted to close $GBTC's 30% discount to NAV he would't file a doomed lawsuit against the SEC, he'd sell #Bitcoin owned by #GBTC and use the proceeds to buy-back shares. That would reduce his AUM and lower his fees. Fees are more important than shareholders. Biden will have to admit the economy is in a recession: Economist Economist Peter Schiff said the economic turmoil in the U.S. is worse than what is being described, saying it will hurt much more than the Great Recession. It's a huge mistake for U.S retailers stuck with inventory they can't sell to slash prices to clear the shelves, only to restock with more expensive products their customers will be even less able to afford. Better not to buy new merchandise and sell current stock at full price. The final read on Q1 GDP is now minus 1.6%. Since Q2 will likely be negative too, the #Fed and @JoeBiden will soon be forced to admit that Amercia's red hot economy has actually been in a #recession all year, which will only get far worse with high #inflation and more rate hikes. Today's outside reversal day likely means the bear-market rally is over and that #stocks will soon hit new lows. Investors are bracing for #recession and higher short-term interest rates than previously expected. But they're not bracing for #inflation remaining high despite both. Every time the economy enters #recession it takes a larger dose of monetary stimulus to get it out. That's because the stimulus prevents real solutions from taking place and sows the seeds of a worse recession to come. This recession will now require a fatal overdose of stimulus. Actually, current real rates are closer to negative 6.5%. If Williams is correct, then to reduce #inflation the #Fed needs to immediately raise interest rates to 9.5%. Since it's not even close, inflation in 2023 is likely to rise from its current 8.6%, not collapse down to 2.5%.
