What Low-Income People Will Lose with a Deadlocked FCC
by Revevilgod God 03 May '22

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2022/04/what-low-income-people-will-lose-dead… When the massive, bipartisan infrastructure package passed Congress, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) was tasked with ensuring equal access to broadband services. That provision is called “Digital Discrimination” and it states, for the first time in federal law, that specifically broadband access cannot be built along the lines of race, income, and other protected classes unless an ISP has an economic or technical justification for the discrimination. In other words, it is now a matter of federal law that digital redlining is banned. Major ISPs fought hard to remove this provision, mostly because they’ve engaged in discrimination based on income status for many years. It is why EFF and dozens of organizations have called for a ban on digital redlining of broadband access back in 2020. Study, after study, after study has shown the same result. Wealthy Americans are getting fiber optic connectivity pushed closer to their homes starting as far back as 2005 while low-income people have been forced to stay on legacy copper and coaxial cable connections built as far back as 30 years ago. But despite the evidence, the law, and the command by Congress, it is still a possibility that equal access for all Americans will be denied if the Senate does not confirm the Biden Administration’s FCC nominee, Gigi Sohn, to the agency. That is because the current four commissioners on the FCC have deep ideological differences of opinion with two believing broadband should be a regulated service with the other two supporting the full deregulation of broadband providers that started under the Pai FCC. Ms. Sohn’s public commitments have made clear she would support regulating broadband as an essential service, which aligns with where most Americans are today with 80 percent of people believing broadband is as important to their lives as electricity and water. If you support the idea that broadband should be treated as importantly as water and electricity, you should call your two Senators now and ask them to vote yes on Ms. Sohn.

EFF is a fraud on the public
by professor rat 03 May '22

Founded by three frauds - a GOP rancher - a Lotus Position collaborator and a bathetic Airliner protestor - the EFF has only gotten worse. Its recently promoted such notorious cop-lovers as David Brin, Cory Doctorow and Bruce Sterling. Everyone working at the EFF appears to be too stupid to be an activist, let alone any kind of anarchist. With enemies like the EFF ancien-regime powers don't need friends. Mongo was wrong about a lot of things but he sure had these losers pegged early! And of course they have only gotten weaker and more worthless since then. Revolutionary cypherpunks don' need no steenkin' EFF badges. And revolutionary cryptoanarchists will join me in dead-pooling Kapor and Gilmore. They're old - we're young - and that's life.

Seeing one of the chief weapons of COINTELPRO is unsubstantiated accusations, Nazi-Punk is continuing a John Young posture going back decades. Neither of these two NAZBOL scumbags ever back up any of their bullshit - and they can't. Because if they aren't coprophagic cops already they are simply turd-burglars. The longer they stay here the more masochistic they look. Scat-porn submissive's have more self-respect. But if you like Charlie Manson, Alex Jones and Vladimir Putin then you might like Nazi-Punk-Juan and Nazbol-Turd-John. Two-sides of the same political shitcoin.

How are Police Using Drones?
by Revevilgod God 03 May '22

How are Police Using Drones? https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2022/01/how-are-police-using-drones Across the country, police departments are using myriad means and resources at their disposal to stock up on drones. According to the most recent tally on the Atlas of Surveillance (a project of EFF and the University of Nevada), at least 1,172 police departments nationwide are using drones. And over time, we can expect more law enforcement agencies to deploy them. A flood of COVID relief money, civil asset forfeiture money, federal grants, or military surplus transfers enable more departments to acquire these flying spies. But how are police departments using them? A new law in Minnesota mandates the yearly release of information related to police use of drones, and gives us a partial window into how law enforcement use them on a daily basis. The 2021 report released by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension documents use of drones in the state during the year 2020. According to the report, 93 law enforcement agencies from across the state deployed drones 1,171 times in 2020—with an accumulative price tag of almost $1 million. The report shows that the vast majority of the drone deployments are not used for the public safety disasters that so many departments use to justify drone use. Rather, almost half (506) were just for the purpose of “training officers.” Other uses included information collection based on reasonable suspicion of unspecified crimes (185), requests from other government agencies unrelated to law enforcement (41), road crash investigation (39), and preparation for and monitoring of public events (6 and 12, respectively). There were zero deployments to counter the risk of terrorism. Police deployed drones 352 times in the aftermath of an “emergency” and 27 times for “disaster” response. This data isn’t terribly surprising. After all, we’ve spent years seeing police drones being deployed in more and more mundane policing situations and in punitive ways. After the New York City Police Department accused one racial justice activist, Derrick Ingram, of injuring an officer’s ears by speaking too loudly through his megaphone at a protest, police flew drones by his apartment window—a clear act of intimidation. The government also flew surveillance drones over multiple protests against police racism and violence during the summer of 2020. When police fly drones over a crowd of protestors, they chill free speech and political expression through fear of reprisal and retribution from police. Police could easily apply face surveillance technology to footage collected by a surveillance drone that passed over a crowd, creating a preliminary list of everyone that attended that day’s protest. As we argued back in May 2020, drones don’t disappear once the initial justification for purchasing them no longer seems applicable. Police will invent ways to use their invasive toys–which means that drone deployment finds its way into situations where they are not needed, including everyday policing and the surveillance of First Amendment-protected activities. In the case of Minnesota’s drone deployment, police can try to hide behind their use of drones as a glorified training tool, but the potential for their invasive use will always hang over the heads (literally) of state residents.
