[ot][spam] Thoughts: Mediums of Warfare
by Karl Semich 20 May '22

20 May '22

After millions of years, cellular biology did not evolve a litany of weapons. Rather, each species has one weapon. Antlers, poison. _only one_. This seems to be what worked. Personally, I'm imagining some kind of 'meta-virus': a lifeform that produces many different kinds of weaponry. Like other horrible ideas, this meta-virus would be a threat to every other lifeform. If it succeeded, life would end as all ecosystems would die. So, every living thing in existence, at some point in its ancient history, had to learn to eradicate things that eradicate everything else, and protect things that don't.

Call for an independent inquiry into the origin of the SARS-CoV-2 virus
by professor rat 20 May '22

20 May '22

Since the identification of theSARS-CoV-2 in Wuhan, China, in January 2020 (1), the origin of the virus has been a topic of intense scientific debate and public speculation. The two main hypotheses are that the virus emerged from human exposure to an infected animal [“zoonosis” (2)] or that it emerged in a research-related incident https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2202769119 See also " Unrestricted Warfare " at Wikipedia

India’s restrictive VPN law should be a warning to us all | TechRadar
by jim bell 20 May '22

20 May '22

https://www.techradar.com/opinion/indias-restrictive-vpn-law-should-be-a-wa… People who subscribe to VPN services will generally be driven by two main factors - privacy and security. Clearly, such users value their privacy for many different reasons, choosing to remain private whilst going about their online business. Any move to restrict or even remove privacy effectively seeks to undermine those who provide VPN services. So it is worrying to see news developing in India where new directions published by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology seek the power to be able to identify VPN users - goodbye privacy. This can only be viewed as another overly restrictive law that essentially compromises the privacy and security of almost all VPN users.

Micron's new 3D NAND memory might usher in a new generation of SSDs with lightning speed | Google's Guide
by jim bell 20 May '22

https://googlesguide.com/microns-new-3d-nand-memory-might-usher-in-a-new-ge… Micron has stated that it has developed a 232-layer 3D NAND memory that will go into full production later this year. The storage device, which Micron calls “the world’s most sophisticated NAND,” is made by splicing together two 3D NAND chips and has a capacity of 128GB (1Tb). The business has not released performance figures for its 232-layer chip, but has hinted that it may outperform its current 3D NAND offerings, paving the way for faster and larger SS NAND memory with 232 layersNAND flash is a form of non-volatile memory found in a wide range of storage devices, including memory cards, USB sticks, and portable drives, as well as SSDs for computers and servers. The overall goal of NAND flash research is to lower the cost per capacity while increasing storage density, effectively removing the need for traditional hard disc drives.
