The biggest grey area for infant death is “sudden infant death syndrome” which accounts for roughly 32 percent of infant deaths. Singapore, Sweden, and Japan have an infant mortality rate that is less than half that of the US (2.80). There were major differences in infant mortality for nations that gave 12-14 doses in the first year of a baby’s life compared to those that gave 21-23 and 24-26 doses. As of 2009, the five nations with the lowest infant mortality rate only require 12 vaccine doses in the infant’s first year, compared to 24-26 doses required by the US. The US pathetically has the highest infant mortality rate out of the 33 developed nations in the study. The covid-19 lockdowns of 2020 provided more insight into how a nation can lower the infant mortality rate. Personal Black Box?

A few weeks ago, I got done binge-watching every episode of NCIS, and am now up to Season 4 of Criminal Minds. Naturally, this induces a bit of what I'll call cinematic paranoia. In what seems to be a majority of episodes, a victim gets attacked, usually ends up dead, and the plucky investigators are stuck trying to figure out what happened. Naturally, they usually do, but only after about 45 minutes of high-tension showtime. It occurs to me that what people may need, for physical security, would be what might be called a "personal black box", analogous to an airplane flight recorder. Or, a civilian version of a cop's body-cam. Any modern smartphone would have the basics of such a device: A high-resolution camera, microphone, and a huge amount of storage. And a quick 911-call if necessary. The mere possession and use of such a device would probably deter the large majority of potential attackers. And even if it does not completely protect a given user, it would allow far more easy identification of the perpetrator. Say, a frame per second when nothing seems to be happening, and a greater rate when triggered somehow. Could a heart-rate monitor be employed, sensed one axis of the phone's accelerometers? Or if the wearer falls down? Or if a sufficiently-loud noise is heard, etc. Or if a trigger-word is spoken a la Siri? Can the data transfer be made economical? Even an average of 1 megabit/second would be over one gigabyte during a 3 hour usage per day. That's substantially greater than most people currently use. One possibility is that the phone could upload the data to the cell phone company, where it could be "parked" for a few seconds or minutes. If nothing happens to the phone to cause a trigger (some sort of attack) the phone could instruct the cell phone company to abandon the data. Conversely, if a trigger occurs, the cell phone company would move 100% of the data to a backup system for later retrieval. Presumably, the cell phone company would offer discounted rates for such transfers, and only offer that service if the local service is sufficiently unloaded at that moment. Jim Bell

I've done some more research, and it seems that existing components could do a substantial part of this project. Consider the Vuze camera, specifically the Vuze+. https://vuze.camera/ It has 8 cameras, in four pairs, aiming in the horizontal plane, and is able to use them to record stereoscopic views. https://vuze.camera/camera/vuze-plus-camera This MIGHT be even better than I anticipated. This device refers to recording data on SD cards. Great, unless the device is smashed or stolen. I consider it to be an essential part of this device that it port a substantial fraction of the data away from the cameraman, perhaps many tens of meters away. But it mentions WiFi: Does that mean that the entire data stream can be transmitted? Even if the data can be only transmitted 'nearby', say 30-100 meters away, by WiFi, that would be a great feature. The specification sheet https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/91Hcr5ModJL.pdf mentions a data rate of 120 MB/second or 80MB/second. Note that it's MB, meaning megaBYTE per second, not merely megabit/second. The specs say that the data is written to a SD card. Can this be expanded using a 1 terabyte (or larger) SSD? Unclear. The data is compressed to MP4. It also mentions: WiFi IEEE 802.11b/g/n 2.4 GHZ I can tell, from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi that WiFi4, 802.11n can do a link from: "72-600 million bits per second". Already, I see a hitch: Does this mean that this device can transmit 80MB x 8 bits, or 640 megabits/second, since the link can only go to "600 million bits per second". While it would be nice to be able to transmit the entire data stream locally, as long as all that stream goes into a local SSD, I suppose it would be okay if "only" half the data, say 320 megabits/second, were transmitted by WiFi to another portable system carried by a different person a few tens of meters away. But one question I have is this: Can the data stream be readily 'split up', so that only a portion of it is transmitted? Or is it an 'all or nothing' sort of thing? And I think it's important that a smaller fraction of the data be transmitted by 4G or 5G cell data. Jim Bell

Owens, who is African American, shared the views of Dykes. She has also been criticized for statement like this one: “The fact that he has been held up as a martyr sickens me. George Floyd was not a good person, I don’t care who wants to spin that. I don’t care how CNN wants to make you think he changed his life around, He was just after his sixth or fifth stint in prison.” On Sunday, Owens disclosed that her campaign to support Dykes’ cafe was suspended by GoFundMe after the company found her fundraiser “to be in support of hate, violence, harassment, bullying, discrimination, terrorism, or intolerance of any kind.” After raising $205,000 in a few hours @gofundme decided to halt my campaign for the Parkside Cafe in Alabama. Both the owner and Owens were expressing their views of Floyd. Many other have expressed equally controversial opinions about police officers, Trump, and others. Will they all be now banned from raising charitable donations? The immunity under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act is based on the theory that these sites are not responsible for content. Courts have interpreted the provision to give sweeping immunity for companies like Twitter and Facebook because they simply supply a forum for others to express themselves. These cites are now actively engaged in forms of private censorship. As many on this blog will attest, I take a simple approach to free speech. The solution to any bad speech is good speech, not silencing of those with whom you disagree. I would take the same position with shutting down voices on the left as with the right. GoFundMe is a forum for people to express themselves through fundraising. It, like Twitter, is an important place for people to engage in free speech and association. I do not see why that mission is not enough. GoFundMe does not have to endorse such causes to allow people to gather at its site. Now however there will be additional claims made by those who want to silence people with opposing views. GoFundMe has invited such demands by engaging in content-based regulation.
