Is it ethical to punch a neo-Nazi? We asked the experts.
by Razer 11 Dec '16

Punching Nazis, otherwise known as "fash-bashing," is part of a long, storied tradition of anti-fascist violence, carried out by communists, socialists and leftists wherever fascism has reared its head. Captain America did it. Indiana Jones did it. Even Geraldo Rivera did it once on his own talk show when a group of skinhead guests started brawling with other guests. Since Trump's campaign became a boon to white supremacists, memes promoting aggression against the alt-right dominate Twitter, private Facebook groups and subreddits. But is punching a Nazi ethical? More important, is it a viable way to stop fascists? Mic asked the experts: ethicists and academics who specialize in moral dilemmas and political activism. The ethicists all agreed... https://mic.com/articles/160203/is-it-ethical-to-punch-a-neo-nazi-we-asked-…

a more reasonable right-wing definition of fascism is one offered by the guy who invented it, Benito Mussolini (actually mostly by his court philosopher Giovanni Gentile). Here's just one important part (more here: http://sourcebooks.fordham.edu/mod/mussolini-fascism.asp) For Fascism, the growth of empire, that is to say the expansion of the > nation, is an essential manifestation of vitality, and its opposite a sign > of decadence. Peoples which are rising, or rising again after a period of > decadence, are always imperialist; and renunciation is a sign of decay and > of death. Fascism is the doctrine best adapted to represent the tendencies > and the aspirations of a people, like the people of Italy, who are rising > again after many centuries of abasement and foreign servitude. But empire > demands discipline, the coordination of all forces and a deeply felt sense > of duty and sacrifice: this fact explains many aspects of the practical > working of the regime, the character of many forces in the State, and the > necessarily severe measures which must be taken against those who would > oppose this spontaneous and inevitable movement of Italy in the twentieth > century, and would oppose it by recalling the outworn ideology of the > nineteenth century - repudiated wheresoever there has been the courage to > undertake great experiments of social and political transformation; for > never before has the nation stood more in need of authority, of direction > and order. If every age has its own characteristic doctrine, there are a > thousand signs which point to Fascism as the characteristic doctrine of our > time. For if a doctrine must be a living thing, this is proved by the fact > that Fascism has created a living faith; and that this faith is very > powerful in the minds of men is demonstrated by those who have suffered and > died for it. > notice all that emphasis on "decadence," on the expansion of Empire, on the "strength" of "the nation," on militarism? it's pretty hard to make that work with the creation of social security and welfare programs (aka The New Deal), or FDR's patent lack of interest in the kind of militaristic nationalism that -- oh, he eventually went to war against, but only after being dragged kicking and screaming, mostly through the US being attacked directly. but what did Mussolini know about fascism (despite being the leader of the actual movement that gave us the word)? It's not really cypherpunk, but it's the most coherent coverage about this familiar topic that I've seen. Researchers baffled by nationalist surge http://www.nature.com/news/researchers-baffled-by-nationalist-surge-1.21110…

Oh, wait! Is this racist, very prejudiced and limited creature really daring to question Rr's intelligence? Hahahahaha!!! ;D Now I will laugh until the sleep arrives... Little unexpected life gifts. :) You know, I can question J__n and Rr's ethics, their aggressiveness, some of their stupid ideas and their horrible sturbbonness (exactly like mine, haha!), but I still think they are intelligent guys and I still like them a bit because their 'B side' is sensible and both can be pretty sweet and kind. I don't think the same about Zzz. He always mentions heart, soul, love, honor, a lot of important things for me, but it always sounds so fake and hypocrite. He is always pretending to be an 'intellectual activist', but is not convincing. Neither 'intellectual', nor 'activist'. And definitely not interesting or fun, even trying hard. :(

Rising carbon dioxide is greening the Earth - but it's not all good news
by Zenaan Harkness 10 Dec '16

Thought someone posted a link like this back in the April thread - could not find that, so posting here. Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide levels is a genuinely good thing. CO2 is making Earth greener—for now http://climate.nasa.gov/news/2436/co2-is-making-earth-greenerfor-now/ If you squint a bit and read a little too quickly, the caption on the image reads "This image shows the change in leaf across the globe from 1982-2015." which bodes really well for peace pipes around the world. And please, read carefully the last paragraph - even scientists know their "scientific models" are flawed and always "being improved" (aka, changing, since the previous iteration was wrong). At least some of them acknowledge this fact.
