Fwd: [Cryptography] Intel trump-ets "walls" to defeat Spectres

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Henry Baker <hbaker1(a)pipeline.com> Date: Thu, Mar 15, 2018 at 3:19 PM Subject: [Cryptography] Intel trump-ets "walls" to defeat Spectres To: cryptography(a)metzdowd.com FYI -- https://newsroom.intel.com/editorials/advancing-security-silicon-level/ Advancing Security at the Silicon Level Hardware-based Protection Coming to Data Center and PC Products Later this Year By Brian Krzanich In addressing the vulnerabilities reported by Google Project Zero earlier this year, Intel and the technology industry have faced a significant challenge. Thousands of people across the industry have worked tirelessly to make sure we delivered on our collective priority: protecting customers and their data. I am humbled and thankful for the commitment and effort shown by so many people *around the globe*. And, I am reassured that when the need is great, companies – and even competitors – will work together to address that need. ... we are making changes to our hardware design to further address the other two. We have redesigned parts of the processor to introduce new levels of protection through *partitioning* that will protect against both Variants 2 and 3. Think of this partitioning as additional "protective walls" between applications and user privilege levels to create an obstacle for bad actors. --- Translation: We're sorry that this has taken so long, but Intel needed to "nerd harder" to redesign our backdoors and provide new niches where we could hide the keys for the housekeeping maids & gardeners. These backdoors & niches improve *your* security, by allowing these hard-working folks to keep a watchful eye out for "bad actors". Our IP lawyers have also been working overtime to come up with words and phrases that make what we're doing appear novel enough to build a patent wall against AMD and ARM. We're hopeful that they've now succeeded. Our researchers in India and Pakistan have assured us that these novel "partitions" will provide the safety and security blanket that our customers have become accustomed to from Intel. _______________________________________________ The cryptography mailing list cryptography(a)metzdowd.com http://www.metzdowd.com/mailman/listinfo/cryptography

[Trigger Warning: Nazi Trollbait] The Traditionalist Workers Who Lay Together...
by g2s 15 Mar '18

"Traditionalist Workers Party"Inbreeding is a fine #Fascist tradition. "Per police report: Neo-Nazi Heimbach was married to his spox's step-daughter & attacked them both after they confronted him about an affair he was carrying out w/his spox's wife. All four listed their jobs as "white nationalists" Thread and "genealogical" chart. https://twitter.com/Bmore_history/status/974287553573675008 Meanwhile, in North Korea... #schoolwalkout to practice a whole nother kind of Gun Control: "Children across Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea stage school walkout to study marksmanship, ballistics, and similar arts, for coming war against children of United States." https://twitter.com/DPRK_News/status/973949239314264066?s=19

On Thu, Mar 15, 2018 at 12:31 PM, g2s <g2s(a)riseup.net> TOP POSTED HTML JUNK (-: > The last full size image I posted Never said referring that, it can refer any image retardation. Were referring to that... the content could simply be the twat link [1]. Or cut / paste from twat as plaintext to fill readers with efficient context [1], as image does not convey additional info than text original (beyond exposing posters imaging metadata), wastes posters / readers time to capture and handle, and bloats thousands of readers spools. > Ps. <fuck_you> This is why we shall win a glorius action together someday, Qapla! [1] Any image / text is fakeable by the poster, and rarely signed against by the original, absent that, any preservation / authenticity claim is more properly a level of trust assigned by the reader to the poster, exclusively in that direction only.

Maker: Build your own UPS with UPSide
by grarpamp 15 Mar '18

15 Mar '18

https://gitlab.com/esr/upside http://esr.ibiblio.org/?p=7839 upside: Design and implementation of an open-hardware, open-software Uninterruptible Power Supply unit. On 2018-02-08 I published a blog rant titled UPSes suck and need to be disrupted complaining about the deficiencies of crappy Uninterruptible Power Supply designs that perform poorly and pile hidden costs on their users in order to minimize vendors' NRE and BOM costs. I suggested that this whole product category needs to be disrupted by an open-hardware design that addresses the many deficiencies of existing hardware. UPSes are not complicated devices; there is no good excuse for the state of the commmercial art to be as inadequate as it is. The response on my blog and G+ was intense, almost overwhelming. It seems many UPS users are unhappy with what the vendors are pushing. This project is an attempt to do something about that. Our goal is to define a set of requirements and develop a specification for a high-quality UPS that can be built from off-the-shelf parts in any reasonably well-equipped makerspace or home electronics shop. Our final deliverable should be PCB designs, a full parts list, assembly instructions, and full manuals for the hardware and software. We welcome contributors: people with interest in UPSes who have expertise in battery technology, power-switching electronics, writing device-control firmware, relevant standards such as USB and the DMTF battery-management profile. We also welcome participation from established UPS and electronics vendors. We know that consumer electronics is a cutthroat low-margin business in which it's tough to support a real R&D team or make possibly-risky product bets. Help us, and then let us help you! To get a handle on the state of the project it is probably best to begin by browsing the wiki that hosts our design documents. You should also read the process document to learn how to contribute effectively.
