https://www.wired.com/story/a-landmark-legal-shift-opens-pandoras-box-for-d… This was not a "real" win, it was a concession and accommodation. A real win would have been a Supreme Court decision striking down all publication and ITAR restrictions to export of any source code or binaries

Life, Death, and Encryption: An Introduction to the Pursuance Project
by The Cryptosphere 14 Jul '18

14 Jul '18

Just the messenger here. I've been doing some ad-hoc volunteering with Barrett Brown's Pursuance Project and their Kickstarter is 75% funded with three days to go. They can make this happen, but they need help. Press release below, blog post here: https://pursuanceproject.wordpress.com/2018/07/12/life-death-and-encryption… and Kickstarter here: https://kickstarter.com/projects/85883596/barrett-browns-pursuance-project Is your life or liberty at risk, merely because you report the truth? Because you are in contact with those who seek to change the world, whose lives are also at risk? According to Human Rights Watch, the answer is yes, and sadly, the risk is not limited to distant dictatorships, but exists even in so-called “bastions of freedom” like Canada and the US. Earlier this week an American congressman introduced the “Unmasking ANTIFA Act” which would criminalize protests and speech against the government. That is why National Magazine Award-winning journalist and digital rights activist Barrett Brown has created The Pursuance Project, an ambitious suite of interconnected tools for creating, assigning, tracking, and (optionally) publicizing team efforts, all protected by military-grade end-to-end zero-knowledge encryption. Simply put, it offers virtual conference rooms, calls, video, text, project management, all in as safe a digital environment as humans can create. Pursuance staffers cannot see what goes on in your Pursuance unless you make them team members. Neither can any government, nor anyone you do not invite. Think of the protection SecureDrop offers journalists and sources, but with that kind of security extended to your team communications, emails, texts, and more. And it’s free. In order to cover the development costs, Pursuance has a Kickstarter, currently 75% funded and nearing completion this Sunday, July 15. With the last ten thousand in sight, and the limited-edition rewards flying out, we’re thrilled to announce that Pursuance founder Barrett Brown will be a speaker at the HOPE (Hackers On Planet Earth)conference in New York July 20-22nd, and was a guest on this Wednesday’s OTH (Off The Hook) radio broadcast on WBAI-FM and podcast, both presented by the hacker “Emmanuel Goldstein” aka Eric Corley, known for founding 2600, The Hacker Quarterly back in 1984, and for his role in the film Hackers. “We’re not asking for money so we can solve a specific problem. We’re asking for money so we can enable people to solve all of them.” Barrett Brown Barrett is an infinitely-quotable raconteur who was once accused of being a “fameball” by Gawker. Pursuance technical lead Steve Phillips is also a good interview, and can take these complex concepts and translate them into simple and compelling English. “No activist should have to entrust their life to Facebook. No one should have to choose between security and the ability to organize large numbers of people. No one should have to use platforms designed to waste your time in the course of trying to make their lives count. When Pursuance launches, things will be different.” Barrett Brown The stakes are high. This is our world now: a world where your own DMs, PMs, texts, and even your face, can be the biggest threat to your freedom. Help us change that. Help us spread the word about Pursuance. Help us create a better future for activism, for action, for journalism, for privacy, and for basic human rights. [LIBERTY] [MINISTRY] SCOTUS: Bundy's exonerated, Judge slams “outrageous” abuses and “flagrant misconduct” of FBI and "Justice" Department
by Zenaan Harkness 13 Jul '18

13 Jul '18

Well here's a rare breath of fresh air for Murricans in a Supreme Court of the US (SCOTUS ) decision exonerating the Bundys - one for the history books, and well done folks, well firetrucking done!‼! Perhaps the Ruby Ridge $3 million payout will give precedent for the Bundy's (not that that can ever compensate for what the govt did on Ruby Ridge), but what's really needed is for you folk across the pond to get some proper grand juries going against the FBI and DOJ - the govt shills will shout "you citizens can't do that!!!" from the rooftops and every forum, but that won't stop a small committed and determined group from achieving their careful and well-planned approach to this "problem". Good luck, Government's Misconduct In Cliven Bundy Case Stems From Ruby Ridge https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-01-15/governments-misconduct-cliven-bun… (Quite a few links in the linked article) Federal judge Gloria Navarro slammed the FBI and Justice Department on Monday, Jan. 8, for “outrageous” abuses and “flagrant misconduct” in the prosecution of Cliven Bundy and sons, the Nevada ranchers who spurred a high-profile standoff with the FBI and Bureau of Land Management in 2014. Navarro condemned the "grossly shocking” withholding of evidence from defense counsel in a case that could have landed the Bundys in prison for the rest of their lives. Navarro, who had declared a mistrial last month, dismissed all charges against the Bundys. Navarro was especially riled because the FBI spent three years covering up or lying about the role of their snipers in the 2014 standoff. The Bundys faced conspiracy charges because they summoned militia to defend them after claiming FBI snipers had surrounded their ranch. Justice Department lawyers scoffed at this claim but newly-released documents vindicate the Bundys. In an interview Saturday, Ammon Bundy reviled the feds: “They basically came to kill our family, they surrounded us with snipers. And then they wanted to lie about it all like none of it happened." Many of the heavily-armed activists who flocked to the scene feared that the FBI snipers had a license to kill the Bundys. Their reaction cannot be understood without considering a landmark 1990s case that continues to shape millions of Americans’ attitude towards Washington: the federal killings and coverups at Ruby Ridge. Randy Weaver and his family lived in an isolated cabin in the mountains of northern Idaho. Weaver was a white separatist who believed races should live apart; he had no record of violence against other races — or anyone else. An undercover federal agent entrapped him into selling a sawed-off shotgun. The feds then sought to pressure Weaver to become an informant but he refused. After Weaver was sent the wrong court date and failed to show up, the feds launched a vendetta. Idaho lawyer David Nevin noted that U.S.: “Marshals called in military aerial reconnaissance and had photos studied by the Defense Mapping Agency. They prowled the woods around Weaver’s cabin with night-vision equipment. They had psychological profiles performed and installed $130,000 worth of long-range solar-powered spy cameras. … They even knew the menstrual cycle of Weaver’s teenage daughter, and planned an arrest scenario around it.” On August 21, 1992, six camouflaged U.S. Marshals carrying machine guns trespassed onto the Weavers’ property. Three marshals circled close to the Weaver cabin and killed one of their dogs. A firefight ensued and 14-year old Sammy Weaver was shot in the back and killed as he was leaving the scene. Kevin Harris, a family friend, responded by fatally shooting a federal marshal who had fired seven shots in the melee. The next day, the FBI sent in its Hostage Rescue Team snipers with orders to shoot to kill any adult male outside the Weaver cabin. A federal appeals court ruling later noted that: “FBI agents formulated rules of engagement that permitted their colleagues to hide in the bushes and gun down men who posed no immediate threat. Such wartime rules are patently unconstitutional for a police action.” FBI sniper Lon Horiuchi shot Randy Weaver in the back after he stepped out of his cabin, wounding him. Horiuchi then shot and killed Vicki Weaver standing in the cabin door holding their 10-month old baby. A confidential 1994 Justice Department task force report concluded: “The absence of a (surrender demand) subjected the Government to charges that it was setting Weaver up for attack.” Weaver and Harris surrendered after an 11-day siege. At their 1993 trial, federal prosecutors asserted that Weaver long conspired to have an armed confrontation with the government. The feds bizarrely asserted that moving from Iowa to a spot near the Canadian border in 1985 was part of Weaver’s plot. After an Idaho jury largely exonerated the defendants, federal judge Edward Lodge slammed DOJ and FBI misconduct and fabrication of evidence in the case. Regardless of the judge’s condemnation, FBI chief Louis Freeh in 1995 exonerated the FBI for its actions at Ruby Ridge. That year, after I slammed Freeh’s whitewash in the Wall Street Journal and elsewhere, Freeh denounced my “inflammatory and unfounded allegations.” Five months later, I snared a confidential 542-page Justice Department report on Ruby Ridge, excerpting its damning findings in a Wall Street Journal piece. The coverup unraveled and the feds paid the Weaver family $3.1 million to settle their wrongful-death lawsuit. A top FBI official was sent to prison for destroying key evidence. But the FBI sniper who killed Vicki Weaver never faced justice. When Boundary County, Idaho, sought to prosecute Horiuchi in 1998, the Clinton administration invoked the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution (which blocks local and state governments from challenging federal power) to torpedo their lawsuit. Solicitor General Seth Waxman absolved the sniper because “federal law-enforcement officials are privileged to do what would otherwise be unlawful if done by a private citizen.” While that claim may sway federal judges, it often fails to charm jurors. A Justice Department brief in the Bundy case revealed that prosecutors dreaded jury nullification — “not guilty” verdicts due to government abuses. That specter spurred prosecutors to withhold key evidence from both the court and the defense counsel, resulting in a mistrial and dismissal of charges. Judge Navarro rightly declared that “a universal sense of justice has been violated” by federal misconduct in the Bundy trial. Americans’ trust in the FBI and Justice Department will not be restored until those agencies are compelled to obey the law and the Constitution. Until that happens, federal prosecutors should continue fearing verdicts from Americans who refuse to convict those whom the feds wrongfully vilify. * * * James Bovard is a USA Today columnist and the author of 10 books, including “Lost Rights: The Destruction of American Liberty” (St. Martin’s Press, 1994).

Australia lost two great feedom advocates this last 2 weeks - Jimmy Stefanovski aka "Jim Sovereign", and Ted Beare
by Zenaan Harkness 12 Jul '18

12 Jul '18

Australia just lost two great men this last week - Jim Stefanovski, aka Jim Sovereign (also aka Hunterman) or just Jimmy to his friends, and Ted Beare, or Teddy. Jimmy's (see below) funeral was yesterday, and we also lost Teddy, or Ted Beare, who's funeral I am going to today - both Aussie patriots in the true sense of the word, both principled to a fault, and both men who truly cared for other human beings, extending a hand, an ear or dollars, depending on the need. Ted's funeral is later today. May you find that which their Soul seeks for you, Zen ----- Forwarded message from Zenaan Harkness <zen(a)freedbms.net> ----- From: Zenaan Harkness <zen(a)freedbms.net> Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2018 21:22:02 +1000 Subject: Jimmy Stefanovski aka "Jim Sovereign", passed away Dear freedom seekers all, many of you knew Jimmy personally, and to many he gave extensive help - sometimes online, sometimes on the phone, and many times in person. I had the pleasure of meeting Jimmy on a few occasions, and the greater pleasure of speaking with him many times on the phone, to both be entertained with his personal stories of dressing down one or another police officer or magistrate (always on a matter of absolute principle of course), and also his challenges (on occasion) to me personally, which he always delivered with a firm clarity, heartfelt personal belief and principles, and always that gentle grace which was also always present in his gentle and easy tone (a refreshing counterpart to my own for example). Jim was known to many as Jim Sovereign, a most appropriate alias for his regular email bulletins and online jousts which we have all so appreciated, and also as Jim Hunter or "Hunterman". A proud and active member of UPMART, and a true Australian patriot, Jim is one of those rare Souls who carried his burdens in dignity, always speaking strongly his principles and his opposition to all corruption and evil. He had Malcolm's back on many an occasion, and always sought to hear both sides of personal stories, bringing a balance and compassion to his public dialogue. Jimmy, you keep that genuine Aussie spirit alive - a true brother and a true "digger" - always reminding that we demand of authority to respect "our right to have a say, in those laws which we are called upon to obey", as our forefathers spoke so succinctly and shed their blood for at the Eureka Stockade. Mate, you've stood us all so proud! Jimmy, you will be dearly missed, you are a shining light to many of us, and you were a rock in this world to whom we sought on occasion your gentle and understanding ear, and your empathy for the difficulties we invariably encounter on this life's path. Thank you. Your passing from this world is a great loss to the freedom movement, and to Australia generally, as most of us well know. Jim's funeral was today, and many a tear was shed. To Jim, may you find that which your Soul seeks for you. P.S.: I do not know Jimmy's full email list, so please forward this as you feel is appropriate. ----- End forwarded message -----

In Surveillance Valley, Yasha Levine traces the history of the internet back to its beginnings as a Vietnam-era tool for spying on guerrilla fighters and antiwar protesters–a military computer networking project that ultimately envisioned the creation of a global system of surveillance and prediction. Levine shows how the same military objectives that drove the development of early internet technology are still at the heart of Silicon Valley today. Spies, counterinsurgency campaigns, hippie entrepreneurs, privacy apps funded by the CIA. From the 1960s to the 2010s — this revelatory and sweeping story will make you reconsider what you know about the most powerful, ubiquitous tool ever created.
