UK Laws Make Free Speech "Abhorrent", Set Up "Duty of Care" Nanny State
by grarpamp 06 Apr '19

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/apr/04/social-media-bosses-coul… The United Kingdom is working on legislation that would hold social media executives liable for harmful content distributed on their platforms. The leaked white paper comes less than 24 hours after Australia passed sweeping legislation that threatens huge fines for social media companies and jail for their executives if they fail to rapidly remove "abhorrent violent material" from their platforms. From the report: Under plans expected to be published on Monday, the government will legislate for a new statutory duty of care, to be policed by an independent regulator and likely to be funded through a levy on media companies. The regulator -- likely initially to be Ofcom, but in the longer term a new body -- will have the power to impose substantial fines against companies that breach their duty of care and to hold individual executives personally liable. The scope of the recommendations is broad. As well as social media platforms such as Facebook and search engines such as Google they take in online messaging services and file hosting sites. Other proposals in the online harm white paper include: - Government powers to direct the regulator on specific issues such as terrorist activity or child sexual exploitation. - Annual "transparency reports" from social media companies, disclosing the prevalence of harmful content on their platforms and what they are doing to combat it. - Co-operation with police and other enforcement agencies on illegal harms, such as incitement of violence and the sale of illegal weapons. "Companies will be asked to comply with a code of practice, setting out what steps they are taking to ensure that they meet the duty of care -- including by designing products and platforms to make them safer, and pointing users who have suffered harm towards support," the report says. "The code of practice is also likely to include the steps companies will be expected to take to combat disinformation, including by using fact-checking services, particularly during election periods, and improving the transparency of political advertising. Regulated firms will be expected to comply with the code of practice -- or explain what other steps they are taking to meet the duty of care. However, many questions are left to the regulator to determine."

https://www.cnet.com/news/facebook-google-and-twitter-to-face-us-lawmakers-… Facebook, Google and Twitter are headed back to Washington next week to testify at a congressional hearing about censorship. Companies have faced accusations that they're censoring [conservative] speech on their platforms. The companies have denied the allegations in the past. The hearing before the Senate Judiciary's subcommittee on the Constitution is scheduled for April 10 and is titled "Stifling Free Speech: Technological Censorship and the Public Discourse." Company officials are expected to appear before the House Judiciary Committee on April 9 to answer the spread of white nationalism on their platforms.

Schneier in Wired: There's No Good Reason to Trust Blockchain Technology

They were all proven wrong. Just like Jamie Dimon and countless other Big Kahuna's, he's drawn his position and fired his load. Expect many to be wrong with this thing too. After all, evolution will continue. phb: > I don't believe BitCoin is worth $3,500. You're right. It's currently worth $4,500+. See ya at $9,000 ;)

https://assets.documentcloud.org/documents/3923261/Thomas-Lesnak-Deposition… “You couldn’t go to H&R Block and say, hey these 23 operations are federal...” Well sheeit, this stuff is more secret than top secret, blacker than black, got to have absolute secrecy. I don’t know where the government finds their contractors, but none of them are trustworthy, trust me. You know, I don’t know what investigators he worked with, but I say keep Lesnak, fire the rest of them, at least Lesnak is worth something. And the funny thing is that Lesnak was involved in international cigarette smuggling with the future President of Paraguay. Did the ATF work with Trump? Maybe ATF is deep state. The ATF selects world leaders. The US Government and the media is illegitimate and impotent. I just can’t take the US government seriously. If they say they are going to do something, I wouldn’t even rely on them to do it. Sent from ProtonMail Mobile

Corrupt governments are inherently inept
by Ryan Carboni 03 Apr '19

Corrupt governments are inherently inept, or at least appear so. There is a decisional overhead in maintaining the illusion of corruption or maintaining a certain level of BS that would avoid outraging people enough to take action. The complexity in decision making was partially what destroyed the Soviet Union, virtually all sectors of society was lying to each other to maintain an illusion and the ability of the central government to enforce their plans rapidly eroded. The US government is extremely corrupt. Take Trump for instance, why would the media keep mentioning he is corrupt, and yet Congress does nothing about it? Congress is the most powerful branch of government, ignoring Congress’s capability to censure or remove their own members, a 2/3 vote would allow Congress to take any action for any reason, exemplified by the Supreme Court decision in Nixon vs. United States (a different Nixon oddly enough). Congress can impeach the entire Supreme Court on a whim, impeach the entire Executive Branch even. So what does it say? Maybe Trump really is corrupt, he got rich from money laundering or so the media says. Where did the profits from Operation Fast and Furious go, to the ATF or to the gun runners themselves? ( https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/08/us/atf-tobacco-cigarettes.html ) I suppose only Congress has oversight over that matter. But the United States is rapidly crumbling, and US politics have become a circus. The whole thing is a distraction, clearly. Every major city has rising unemployment, with homeless people looking more and more able to work, even the city I live in is in debate about adding maybe several dozen units for housing the homeless (which says a lot about everyone’s sanity or the size of the local homeless population). So. The US government can’t do anything about Trump? Just a bunch of leaks and exaggerated statements condemning Trump with no evidence? Even if the evidence had to be secret, Congress can’t be trusted with it? Or if Congress can be trusted with it, do they lack the spine to maintain a functioning and free society? I wonder what happened to the ATF agents involved with violating federal law and smuggling cigarettes. Maybe they pulled a John Connolly, forged informant reports and accepted bribes. Or they used fake informants and forged the paperwork to pay off other officials. It certainly seems outrageous, it sounds like the whole ATF could be potentially corrupt, or just a few bad apples. But what does it say about the “good” people if they don’t notice what is happening around them when they are practically in the thick of it? Sent from ProtonMail Mobile
