PsychWars! YOU'VE BEEN DRAFTED!
by Razer 08 Jan '20

08 Jan '20

The U.S. Army is warning about fake text messages saying people have been selected for the military draft. In a statement Tuesday, the Army said that several people around the country have received texts saying they have been drafted or are eligible for the draft. Some texts told the recipients to head to their nearest Army branch “for immediate departure to Iran.” The texts included both real and fake names of Army officials, and warned of fines and jail time for a minimum of six years if there was no reply. Kelli Bland, director of Public Affairs for U.S. Army Recruiting Command, told McClatchy News that their recruiters would not communicate with anyone regarding a draft or registration in the Selective Service. The Selective Service System, which is a separate agency from the Department of Defense, manages registration for the draft. The draft has not been in effect since 1973. The Selective Service System said in a Facebook post Jan. 3 that it is “conducting business as usual.” “In the event that a national emergency necessitates a draft, Congress and the President would need to pass official legislation to authorize a draft,” the post said. Bland said Army security personnel are looking into the origin of the texts. https://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/nation-world/national/article239073053.html

>From the "week old news, but better late than never" dept. Trust Hillary: Hillary Clinton Slams Trump For Not Taking A More 'Hands-Off' Approach To Embassy Attack January 1st, 2020 https://babylonbee.com/news/hillary-clinton-slams-trump-for-not-taking-a-mo… WASHINGTON, D.C—Hillary Clinton has slammed President Trump on Twitter for not taking a more "hands-off" approach to the protests in Iraq that threatened American lives at the embassy there. After Trump quickly sent Marines to defend Americans trapped at the embassy, Clinton immediately blasted him for taking such "rash, uncalled-for" action when he could have just "waited around a while to see what happens." ... Re: looking for a word

First of all, thank you to everybody who replied, both on and off-list. On 07/01/2020 12:38, ao402468(a)gmail.com wrote: [..] > To abstract the object. I had independently come up with that word - but ao402468 published first. Darn, but not liver-gnawing time :) Words people have come up with: steal pirate leak plagiarise breach mirror clone replicate image intercept disseminate breach transgress microfilm xerox exfiltrate decrypt expose disclose compromise extract copy pinch crib abstract "Copy" is good, and obvious, but doesn't have the emotional connotations of stealing: scenario, you are a secure database operator/designer and someone has - "whatevered" - your data. You are right royally pi**ed off and want to nail the f#*#*#*s to a wall and stick knitting needles in their bellies and watch them die slowly and insane from peritonitis. If you can keep yourself from killing the s#!*-gobbing _F$*#S_ sooner. "Copy" seems a little weak for what they did. "Crib" and "pinch" are also good, but both have or had a specific crypto meaning, "crib" being a known or guessed plaintext, and "pinch" meaning crypto things stolen by non-cryptanalytic means. Both are a little weak. Both are also a bit skoolboyish. I think "abstract" is probably the best word available, but am a little worried that most people will not be aware of the secondary meaning of abstract. It doesn't necessarily involve dishonesty, but it is sometimes used that way - eg abstraction of electricity, an offense under UK law; you can't steal electricity as it is not a thing, so the offense is "abstraction" not "theft". Any further thoughts? This usage will eventually go in a book, which probably no-one will ever read, but if they do you may end up using whatever the final choice is... Again, thank you all for your help. ;-) Peter Fairbrother

Looking for a word

to mean stolen from a record but still in it, ie integrity and availability are preserved but not confidentiality. "Stolen" is too laced with implications of the stolen object not being there any more, "copied" does not imply the theft aspect enough, "pirated" is too silly. Any other suggestions? Thanks. Self-Sovereign ID Tech
by grarpamp 07 Jan '20

https://www.computerworld.com/article/3512108/frustration-over-growing-priv… https://github.com/WebOfTrustInfo/rwot5-boston/blob/master/topics-and-advan… There is a growing movement among fintech companies, banks, healthcare services, universities and others toward disintermediating the control of online user identities in favor of supporting end-user controlled decentralized digital wallets based on P2P blockchain. Self-sovereign identity (SSI) is a term used to describe the digital movement that recognizes an individual should own and control their identity without intervening administrative authorities. The wallets would carry encryption keys provided by third parties and could be used to digitally sign transactions or provide access to verifying information, everything from bank-issued credit lines to diplomas -- all of which are controlled by the user through public key infrastructure (PKI). The blockchain ledger and PKI technology is hidden behind user-friendly mobile applications. Currently, there are more proof-of-concept projects than production systems involving a small number of organizations. The pilots, being trialed in government, financial services, insurance, healthcare, energy and manufacturing, don't yet amount to an entire ecosystem, but they will grow over the next few years, according to Gartner.
