Slavery was Formally Abolished Today, Happy Freedom Day
by Karl 06 Feb '21

06 Feb '21

Today is Freedom Day in the United States. This is the day the abolition of slavery was signed into law. Many slaves cannot even say the word "freedom" safely. The word may come across as sarcastic or pointless. But we have a holiday to celebrate its serious, literal meaning. This holiday was signed into law by Harry Truman and commemorates the freedom law signed by Abraham Lincoln. The United Nations has extensive references around the ongoing prevention of human trafficking: https://www.unodc.org/unodc/en/human-trafficking/what-is-human-trafficking.… I'll send them an e-mail asking for localised resources. If you contact a human trafficking rescue organisation of any kind, it's important to remember that the workers may not be familiar at all with coercive silence. They will expect you to be able to say directly and clearly what they need to know to be able to help you, and for you to ask for this help. If you can do this, they often can help, in the USA. The National Human Trafficking Hotline in the USA is: Voice: 1-888-373-7888 Text: 233733 Web Chat: https://humantraffickinghotline.org/chat (only during some hours of day) There are other human trafficking hotlines in the USA, both national and regional, although in some states they do not have a large presence. I do not have other links at the moment, I'm afraid.

SchoepJeff - 2h Replying to @Dr_DMilton Excellent thread Sir. As the Former leader of the largest Neo-Nazi group in the US, I concur with your statement. Extremists heavily target the #Military & have done so w/ a variety of tactics. The large number of veterans in #extremist groups would shock & dismay most Americans. kkllddbb - 5h Replying to @Dr_DMilton and @emptywheel I can tell there’s a problem from the emails/conversations my retired husband has with his lifelong buddies from USNA. I always thought they were intelligent but the stuff they believe is mind-numbingly stupid. “…There’s always been a slice of the military who romanticize fighting on behalf of the white, Christian ethnostate they believe the US should be. Dehumanizing nonwhite non-Christians and glorifying violence is an entrenched subculture we have to eradicate…” Dr_DMilton The U.S. military has an extremism problem…" https://twitter.com/Dr_DMilton/status/1357712367837151235 saftergood - 5h “The public deserves as much transparency as possible,” a new presidential directive says. Jul 20, 2015 - Julian Assange: To be honest, I don’t like the word transparency; cold dead glass is transparent…"

Where to find Resources for Human Trafficking Victims?
by Karl 04 Feb '21

04 Feb '21

Hi Amnesty International, I am just a random citizen of the USA. I wanted to share resources to help victims for freedom day (feb 1st) a few days ago. I found the UN's page at https://www.unodc.org/unodc/en/ngos/NGO-Database.html but it seems to be done. I emailed them and haven't gotten a reply. Do you guys know of any resources people could share to help international victims of human trafficking? Thanks so much.

NGO Database Status
by Karl 04 Feb '21

04 Feb '21

Hi UNODC, I noticed the database at https://www.unodc.org/unodc/en/ngos/NGO-Database.html is down. This page is referenced as a way to find resources to help people in trouble. Do you have any other resources for helping people in trouble? Are there any plans to repair the database page? Is there any avenue where people could provide resources of any kind to aid the situation? I e-mailed unodchtmss(a)un.org but didn't receive a reply. Thank you so much, and may your day bring you ease and wellness.
