US: "Even if we lose, we can start again with Mr. Assange and issue another extradition request" -James Lewis QC today at the UK High Court on behalf of the US Government So they have a case against him for breaking-and-entering US-based computers ( or conspiracy to do so ) and some other case. So? Just from the public record anyone might infer Mr Assmange was more interested in espionage than journalism. Then ( again ) they got Al Capone for tax evasion. When a rotten criminal is loose practically all means are justified in stopping him. Such is the case here. The USG is not always wrong - Hell - even Hitler was sometimes correct. Even Stalin. Even Mao. Even Assmange. ( cypherpunks are all about privacy for the poor and transparency for the powerful )

"Julian " the most dangerous facilitator of totalitarianism we have ever seen. The internet is a threat to human civilization " ASSANGE 2012" Although it was probably on Fidonet, about 1989 I said (during the Phil Zimmermann controversy) that the United States government's development of the Internet was an act of slow-motion (governmental) suicide. A bit TOO slow, in hindsight. . . ." Slow, yes, and why? I suspect most people look at alternatives - like Marxist Communism and inverse-Marxist Libertarianism - then plump for the Devil they know. Its easier to muddle-through to the Singularity than actively work to collapse all govts before then ( 2030 - 45 ) Jim Dumbell knows so much about slowdowns from constant practice - APster, Stiffs, PAM, AP in the field, Anarchopulco, etc, etc If he had any friends they would have taken him to ER by now #RigorMortis

Re: [tor-relays] Relays running an unsupported (EOL) Tor version
by grarpamp 28 Oct '21

> mpan: >> Is there any data available that sheds light on >> why operators run outdated versions Besides latent OS packages, or being busy, or simply not updating things, those are natures of computing world anyway... or having no network operations crypto-monetization model as some nextgen p2p overlay-exit networks are now working with... there can be other reasons people may run different versions... tor the software is different from from Tor Project Inc. The software is opensource and BSD licensed. Thus anyone may copy, run, share, redistribute, fork, modify, support it, create and vote in any consensus, run relays, run more networks than just tor on their nodes, run services, etc, completely without involvement from, and indeed in full disregard of whatever Tor Project Inc and its people may say. The tor protocol, code, and operational network are not the property of Tor Project Inc, nor are its operators and users under its command and control. tor's users may run whichever of the many tor client implementations they wish to run, and may run whatever protocols, applications, and uses over the tor network that they wish. tor's relay operators and dirauths are free to run and support the running of older, different, forked, or project protocol addition enhancement or migration versions, in part in order to support features that some of the entire global userbase of tor are using, and have no good replacement for, or may wish to develop apps to, and run them upon or over, such features and capabilities in the future. Such as the censored topic of v2 onions with OnionCat, OnionVPN, etc in order to continue or design, deploy, and run new p2p apps comms, etc over those, ie... https://www.onioncat.org/ So a large number of relays may be freely and rightly choosing, as is their right if they wish, to continue running a v2 onion version for that. And overlay nets have some great uses, some examples of which Tor Project advertises, such that those users or even operators may prefer not to post, so you may want to consider some of those good uses for them in their stead, even ones that are dependent on such versions. And another topical fact re versions, which will be censored, is that attackers do falsify their version strings, and a lot more, in order to run whatever custom exploits they want against the network. And that Traffic Analysis and Sybil attacks nodes are real and in use. And that there is no longer sufficient warning and ongoing visibly posted education on these and other matters, in particular at point of download, install, splashpage, and frontpage... even some warnings were removed... versioned away. These are the sort of lack of info that can put users at severe risk. Tor Project Inc is censoring embarassing or simple facts / info. And is now attempting to silence and kill useful and in use features and future application possibilities based on them, whitewashing them with handwavy vague absolutist claims such as "old" or "insecure", instead of creating detailed comparisons for users. tor's users and operators are the ones who get to choose their own versions, and use appropriate features / freedom / security tradeoffs, not by the sole dictate of Tor Project Inc. Which by the way is funded to $Millions per year so that is not an argument to killing otherwise modularizable features either, but may be why there are insufficient disclaimers, and censors. On 10/28/21, Georg Koppen <gk(a)torproject.org> wrote: > I don't think we have [...] feedback Well when Tor's hypocrites, liars, and frauds are censoring feedback etc off all their "bricked up" fora, full stop. Thus their users and operators are missing information and topical discussions may hardly flourish can they in an environment of censor, chilled, and steered speech. The censorship of conversation on tor by Tor Project Inc and its people... while publicizing claims to cherish and uphold Free Speech ideals... is blatantly hypocritical, and it must end.

https://decrypt.co/84635/bitcoin-miner-greenidge-generation-allegedly-threa… Bitcoin bad for business Bitcoin Mining Showdown Puts New York on Front Lines of a Green Fight The Finger Lakes region is one of New York state’s most picturesque, but the natural beauty helps conceal the pain of a region hard hit by industrial decline. Jun 2, 2021 10 min read Bitcoin mining itself is a controversial practice, due to the fact that it is often extremely energy-intensive. According to Cambridge University, the Bitcoin network currently consumes over 110 terawatt-hours of electricity per year, meaning that if Bitcoin was a country, it would be among the world’s leading countries by annual electricity consumption. This, in turn, leads to a hefty carbon footprint. According to Cambridge University, only 39% of the Bitcoin network runs on renewable energy. Previous research conducted by Decrypt indicated that the other 61%, which runs on fossil fuels like Greenidge’s facility, generates greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to billions of pounds of burned coal, or millions of homes’ average electricity consumption for the year. The Seneca Lake battleground While there is a broader, industry-wide concern about Bitcoin mining and the environment, concerns surrounding the Greenidge facility have often been in reference to the nearby Seneca Lake. Buddington recently told Decrypt that the Keuka Outlet—a stream close to Greenidge’s facility that feeds into Seneca Lake—felt like it was getting warmer. “When kayaking in the outlet, especially during the summer months, when you dip your hand in the water, it feels unnaturally warm,” she told Decrypt. According to The Committee to Preserve the Finger Lakes, she’s right. The group has measured the changing temperature of the Keuka Outlet, and found that water temperature increased from roughly 50 degrees to roughly 85 degrees between January and July 2021. Bitcoin The Hard Truth About Bitcoin's Energy Consumption Bitcoin recently broke $60,000 for the first time, cementing its perch as the “big dog” of cryptocurrencies. It has been embraced by groups as disparate as politicians, NFL stars, and Tesla CEO This, Taylor claims, can be a “contributing factor” to harmful algae blooms, a form of bacteria that is harmful to humans and animals. “We’re seeing this as a growing problem on our lake, which is a drinking water resource for over 100,000 people,” Taylor previously told Decrypt. Greenidge, on the other hand, said in its recent-most letter to Taylor that “there is zero evidence that Greenidge’s operation is increasing the likelihood of Harmful Algae Blooms or threatening any aspect of Seneca Lake.” What’s next for Greenidge? Greenidge is facing a battle for the renewal of its Title V permit with New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation. That Title V permit—which Greenidge obtained in 2016—compels the facility to monitor and control the amount of greenhouse gas emissions it emits every year. In March 2021, Greenidge submitted a package of documents in support of its renewed application to the DEC. Bitcoin Is Seneca Lake Being Warmed By Bitcoin Mining? Not Quite. Greenidge Generation has made millions of dollars mining somewhere between 3.8 to 4 Bitcoin per day at its Dresden, NY facility. Critics have argued the facility damages the local environment,... That package contained a letter—seen by Decrypt—which specified the company could legally permit up to 641,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents annually. That, according to the Environmental Protection Agency’s carbon emissions calculator, suggests the company’s maximum legal emissions would amount to over 700 million pounds of burned coal, or 116 thousand homes’ average electricity consumption for the year. As the company fights for its license renewal, Buddington and Taylor are not the only ones standing in its way. Earlier this week, concerns over Greenidge’s environmental impact were raised at a state Assembly hearing. “Is it or is it not an energy hog? If it is, if it’s undermining our climate goals then we need to take a really, really careful look at it, including saying no,” said Russ Haven, legislative counsel for New York Public Interest Research Group, per WSKG. Decrypt has reached out to Greenidge Generation for further comment on this story. We will update this article should we receive a response.
