'I didn't think of Iraqis as humans, ' says U.S. soldier who raped 14-year-old girl before killing her and her family

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1340207/I-didnt-think-Iraqis-human… #FreeAssange 'I didn't think of Iraqis as humans,' says U.S. soldier who raped 14-year-old girl before killing her and her family Steven Green, pictured in April 2009, is serving five life sentences for rape and murder in Iraq. He has launched appeal but doesn't have 'much hope' of ever being freed An Iraq War veteran serving five life terms for raping and killing a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and killing her parents and sister says he didn't think of Iraqi civilians as humans after being exposed to extreme warzone violence. Green is challenging the Military Extraterritorial Jurisdiction Act, which allows the federal government to charge an American in civilian court for alleged crimes committed overseas. He was the first former soldier convicted under the statute. The U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals has scheduled arguments for January 21. Green is challenging the constitutionality of that law, saying it gives the executive branch too much leeway over whom to prosecute. Prosecutors say the law should be upheld. 'I've got some hope, but I'm not delusional about it,' said Green, now 25. 'I hope it works. But, whenever they give you multiple life sentences, they're not planning on letting you out.' Green didn't testify at trial. During sentencing, he apologized and said he expects to face 'God's justice' when he dies Abeer Qassim al-Janabi, Green's 14-year-old victim, whose parents and sister were also murdered in the attack. Green said deaths of two of his colleagues had 'messed him up real bad' A 19-year-old high school dropout from Midland, Texas, Green joined the Army after obtaining his high school equivalency diploma from a correspondence school. He said signing up was easy, born of a sense of duty to defend his country and the opportunities that offered. 'I thought I'd be neglecting my duty if I didn't,' Green said. 'You've got a career, you've got a job. It gives you opportunities to do things with your life.' The military placed Green with the Fort Campbell-based 101st Airborne. Upon arriving in Iraq, Green said, his training to kill, the rampant violence and derogatory comments by other soldiers against Iraqis served to dehumanise that country's civilian population. A turning point came on December 10, 2005, Green said, when a previously friendly Iraqi approached a traffic checkpoint and opened fire. The shots killed Staff Sgt. Travis L. Nelson, 41, instantly. Sgt. Kenith Casica, 32, was hit in the throat. Casica died as soldiers raced him aboard a Humvee to a field hospital. Green said those deaths 'messed me up real bad.' The deaths intensified Green's feelings toward all Iraqis, whom soldiers often called by a derogatory term. 'There's not a word that would describe how much I hated these people,' Green said. 'I wasn't thinking these people were humans.' Neighbour Hussein Mohammed points to the charred and blood-splattered crime scene where the killings took place in Mahmoudiya, Iraq Over the next four months, Green sought help from a military stress counsellor, obtaining small doses of a mood-regulating drug - and a directive to get some sleep before returning to his checkpoint south of Baghdad. In the interview, Green described alcohol and drugs being prevalent at the checkpoint. Green said soldiers there frequently felt abandoned by the Army and were given little support after the deaths of Casica and Nelson. Spc. James P. Barker of Fresno, California, testified that he pitched the idea of going to the al-Janabi family's home to Sgt. Paul E. Cortez of Barstow, California, who was in charge of the traffic checkpoint Scene of the attack in Al Mahmoudiya on the outsikirts of Baghdad Green, who talked frequently of wanting to kill Iraqis, was brought along. Cortez testified that Barker and Green had the idea of having sex with the girl and that he didn't know the family would be killed. Green, then a private, saidhe had 'an altered state of mind' at the time. 'I wasn't thinking about more than 10 minutes into the future at any given time,' Green said. 'I didn't care.' At the Iraqi home, Barker and Cortez pulled Abeer into one room, while Green held the mother, father and youngest daughter in another. Pfc. Jesse V. Spielman, of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, stood guard in the hall. As Barker and Cortez raped the teen, Green shot the three family members, killing them. He then went into the next room and raped Abeer, before shooting her in the head. The soldiers lit her remains on fire before leaving. Another soldier stood watch a few miles away at the checkpoint. Since his sentencing on September 4, 2009, Green has been attacked at the federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana, and was then transferred to Arizona. In prison, Green converted to Catholicism and has corresponded with a nun in Louisville about his faith. Green described prison life as a 'lonely existence' and said other inmates consider those convicted of sex offenses among the lowest, making life 'hazardous' among the general prison population. For Green, each day is just a matter of getting through 24 hours so he can do it all again the next day. Meanwhile, he lives with memories of the attack that took away the Iraqi family

Cortez, Specialist James P. Barker, Private First Class Jesse V. Spielman, and Private First Class Bryan L. Howard – had been playing cards, illegally drinking alcohol ([whiskey](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whiskey)mixed with an energy drink), hitting golf balls, and discussing plans to rape Abeer and "kill some[Iraqis](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraqi_people)."[15](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmudiyah_rape_and_killings#cite_note-… was very persistent about "killing some Iraqis" and kept bringing up the idea. At some point, the group decided to go to Abeer's home, after they had seen her passing by their checkpoint earlier. The four soldiers of the six-man unit responsible for the checkpoint – Barker, Cortez, Green, and Spielman – then left their posts for Abeer's home. Two men, Howard and another soldier, remained at the post. Howard had not been involved in discussions to rape and murder the family. He heard the four men talking about it and saw them leave, but thought they were joking and were planning to beat up some Iraqi men to blow off some steam. The sixth soldier at the checkpoint had no involvement. On the day of the massacre, Abeer's father Qassim was enjoying time with his family, while his sons were at school.[16](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmudiyah_rape_and_killings#ci… broad daylight, the four U.S. soldiers walked to the house, not wearing their uniforms, but wearing army-issue long underwear to look like "[ninjas](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninja)",[10](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmudiyah_rape_and_killings#cite_note-Time-10)and separated 14 year-old Abeer and her family into two different rooms. Spielman was responsible for grabbing Abeer's 6-year-old sister, who was outside the house with her father, and bringing her inside the house.[17](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmudiyah_rape_and_killings#cit… then broke Abeer's mother's arms (likely evidence of a struggle that resulted when she heard her daughter being raped in the other room) and murdered her parents and younger sister, while two other soldiers, Cortez and Barker, raped Abeer.[18](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmudiyah_rape_and_killings#cit… wrote that Cortez pushed Abeer to the floor, lifted her dress, and tore off her underwear while she struggled. According to Cortez, Abeer “kept squirming and trying to keep her legs closed and saying stuff in[Arabic](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arabic_people),” as he and Barker took turns holding her down and raping her.[19](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmudiyah_rape_and_killings#cite_… testified that Abeer heard the gunshots in the room in which her parents and little sister were being held, causing her to scream and cry even more as she was being violently raped by the men. Green then emerged from the room saying, "I just killed them, all are dead".[20](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmudiyah_rape_and_killings#cite_note-20)Green, who later said the crime was "awesome",[21](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmudiyah_rape_and_killings#cite_note-21)then raped Abeer and shot her in the head several times. After the massacre, Barker poured petrol on Abeer and the soldiers set fire to the lower part of the girl's body, from her stomach down to her feet. Barker testified that the soldiers gave Spielman their bloodied clothes to burn and that he threw the[AK-47](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/AK-47)used to murder the family into a canal. They left to "celebrate" their crimes with a meal of chicken wings.[22](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmudiyah_rape_and_killings#cit…, the fire from Abeer's body eventually spread to the rest of the room, and the smoke alerted neighbors, who were among the first to discover the scene.[2](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmudiyah_rape_and_killings#cite… recalled, "The poor girl, she was so beautiful. She lay there, one leg was stretched and the other bent and her dress was lifted up to her neck."[11](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmudiyah_rape_and_killings#cite_note-… ran to tell Abu Firas Janabi, Abeer's uncle, that the farmhouse was on fire and that dead bodies could be seen inside the burning building. Janabi and his wife rushed to the farmhouse and doused some of the flames to get inside. Upon witnessing the scene inside, Janabi went to a checkpoint guarded by[Iraqi Army](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraqi_Army)soldiers to report the crime. Abeer's 9- and 11-year-old younger brothers, Ahmed and Mohammed, returned from school that afternoon to find smoke billowing from the windows. After going to their uncle's home, they returned to the house only to be[traumatized](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychological_trauma), finding their father shot in the head, mother shot in the chest, 6-year-old sister Hadeel shot in the face, and 14-year-old sister Abeer's remains burning.[6](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahmudiyah_rape_and_killings#ci… The Iraqi soldiers immediately went to examine the scene and thereafter went to an American checkpoint to report the incident. DALI was a fascist
by professor rat 09 Apr '22

09 Apr '22

Coderman, sorry, Dali was allegedly an admirer of Hitler. Later, when the Spanish dictator, Francisco Franco, ruled Spain, despite his ruthlessness towards the common man, Dali maintained affable relations with him. Dali constantly affirmed his apolitical stance but his paintings and actions did not match with his statements. George Orwell wrote an essay on him and ruminated on a question and called Dali “a disgusting human being” In 1975, when General Franco executed many people, hundreds and thousands of fascists gathered in support of Franco, chanting his name and making fascists salutes. When the whole world condemned this appalling act, Dali praised Franco and made him the “greatest hero of Spain.” Over and over again, following high-profile rape scandals and domestic abuse, intellectual thievery and explicit racism, people have asked, hesitant yet hopeful, if it's possible to separate the art from the artist. The subtext of this question, usually outwardly expressed as a kind of philosophical fluffing, is: Can we please just purely enjoy our favorite catchy songs, cool-looking paintings, and well-written sentences without having to think about the suffering their creators engendered? With Dalí—an openly obnoxious man who willfully claimed necrophilia, cruelty to animals and people, fascism, self-obsession, and greed—to do this seems particularly egregious. When Dalí collaborated with Philippe Halsman (who also made a book about Dalí's mustache) to make the iconic Dalí Atomicus photo, the process required 28 attempts, which would have been fine except for the fact that each of those attempts involved throwing three cats into the air and flinging buckets of water at them. I hope Coderman's happy now.
