Dear Colleague: In 1967, during excavation for the construction of a new shopping center in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, workers uncovered a vault containing a cache of ancient scrolls[1]. Most were severely damaged, but those that could be recovered confirmed the existence of a secret society long suspected to have been active in the region around the year 200 BC. Based on a translation of these documents, we now know that the society, the Cult of the Bound Variable, was devoted to the careful study of computation, over two millennia before the invention of the digital computer. While the Monroeville scrolls make reference to computing machines made of sandstone, most researchers believed this to be a poetic metaphor and that the "computers" were in fact the initiates themselves, carrying out the unimaginably tedious steps of their computations with reed pens on parchment. Within the vault, a collection of sandstone wheels marked in a language consisting of 32 glyphs was found. After 15 years of study, we have successfully completed the translation of what is known as "Codex32," a document that describes the functions of the wheels. It was discovered that the wheels operate a system of cryptographic computations that was used by cult members to safeguard their most valuable secrets. The Codex32 system allows secrets to be carved into multiple tablets and scattered to the far corners of the earth. When a sufficient number of tablets are brought together the stone wheels are manipulated in a manner to recover the secrets. This finding may be of particular interest to the Bitcoin community. A minimum threshold of shares, which can be between 1 and 9, is needed to recover the secret, whereas without sufficient shares, no information about the secret is recoverable. ===Copyright=== This document is licensed under the 3-clause BSD license. ===Motivation=== BIP-0032 master seed data is the source entropy used to derive all private keys in an HD wallet. Safely storing this secret data is the hardest and most important part of self-custody. However, there is a tension between security, which demands limiting the number of backups, and resilience, which demands widely replicated backups. Encrypting the seed does not change this fundamental tradeoff, since it leaves essentially the same problem of how to back up the encryption key(s). To allow users freedom to make this tradeoff, we use Shamir's secret sharing, which guarantees that any number of shares less than the threshold leaks no information about the secret. This approach allows increasing safety by widely distributing the generated shares, while also providing security against the compromise of one or more shares (as long as fewer than the threshold have been compromised). However, unlike SLIP-0039, this standard also aims to be simple enough for hand computation. Users who demand a higher level of security for particular secrets, or have a general distrust in digital electronic devices, have the option of using hand computation to backup and restore secret data in an interoperable manner. Note that hand computation is optional, the particular details of hand computation are outside the scope of this standard, and implementers do not need to be concerned with this possibility. The checksum is designed to be an error correcting code that can correct up to 4 character substitutions, up to 8 unreadable characters (called erasures), or up to 13 consecutive erasures. Implementations SHOULD provide the user with a corrected valid codex32 string if possible. However, implementations SHOULD NOT automatically proceed with a corrected codex32 string without user confirmation of the corrected string, either by prompting the user, or returning a corrected string in an error message and allowing the user to repeat their action. The subsequent data characters in a codex32 secret, excluding the final checksum of 13 characters, is a direct encoding of a BIP-0032 HD master seed. The master seed is decoded by converting the data to bytes: * Translate the characters to 5 bits values using the bech32 character table from BIP-0173, most significant bit first. * Re-arrange those bits into groups of 8 bits. Any incomplete group at the end MUST be 4 bits or less, and is discarded. Note that unlike the decoding process in BIP-0173, we do NOT require that the incomplete group be all zeros. For an unshared secret, the threshold parameter (the first character of the data part) is ignored (beyond the fact it must be a digit for the codex32 string to be valid). We recommend using the digit "0" for the threshold parameter in this case. The 4 character identifier also has no effect beyond aiding users in distinguishing between multiple different master seeds in cases where they have more than one. ===Recovering Master Seed=== When the share index of a valid codex32 string (converted to lowercase) is not the letter "s", we call the string an codex32 share. The first character of the data part indicates the threshold of the share, and it is required to be a non-"0" digit. In order to recover a master seed, one needs a set of valid codex32 shares such that: * All shares have the same threshold value, the same identifier, and the same length. * All of the share index values are distinct. * The number of codex32 shares is exactly equal to the (common) threshold value. A codex32 string with a data part of 94 or 95 characters is never legal as a regular codex32 string is limited to 93 data characters and a long codex32 string is at least 96 characters. Generation of long shares and recovery of the master seed from long shares proceeds in exactly the same way as for regular shares with the <code>ms32_interpolate</code> function. The long checksum is designed to be an error correcting code that can correct up to 4 character substitutions, up to 8 unreadable characters (called erasures), or up to 15 consecutive erasures. As with regular checksums we do not specify how an implementation should implement error correction, and all our recommendations for error correction of regular codex32 strings also apply to long codex32 strings. ==Rationale== This scheme is based on the observation that the Lagrange interpolation of valid codewords in a BCH code will always be a valid codeword. This means that derived shares will always have valid checksum, and a sufficient threshold of shares with valid checksums will derive a secret with a valid checksum. The header system is also compatible with Lagrange interpolation, meaning all derived shares will have the same identifier and will have the appropriate share index. This fact allows the header data to be covered by the checksum. The checksum size and identifier size have been chosen so that the encoding of 128-bit seeds and shares fit within 48 characters. This is a standard size for many common seed storage formats, which has been popularized by the 12 four-letter word format of the BIP-0039 mnemonic. The 13 character checksum is adequate to correct 4 errors in up to 93 characters (80 characters of data and 13 characters of the checksum). This is somewhat better quality than the checksum used in SLIP-0039. For 256-bit seeds and shares our strings are 74 characters, which fits into the 96 character format of the 24 four-letter word format of the BIP-0039 mnemonic, with plenty of room to spare. A longer checksum is needed to support up to 512-bit seeds, the longest seed length specified in BIP-0032, as the 13 character checksum isn't adequate for more than 80 data characters. While we could use the 15 character checksum for both cases, we prefer to keep the strings as short as possible for the more common cases of 128-bit and 256-bit master seeds. We only guarantee to correct 4 characters no matter how long the string is. Longer strings mean more chances for transcription errors, so shorter strings are better. The longest data part using the regular 13 character checksum is 93 characters and corresponds to a 400-bit secret. At this length, the prefix <code>MS1</code> is not covered by the checksum. This is acceptable because the checksum scheme itself requires you to know that the <code>MS1</code> prefix is being used in the first place. If the prefix is damaged and a user is guessing that the data might be using this scheme, then the user can enter the available data explicitly using the suspected <code>MS1</code> prefix. ==Backwards Compatibility== codex32 is an alternative to BIP-0039 and SLIP-0039. It is technically possible to derive the BIP32 master seed from seed words encoded in one of these schemes, and then to encode this seed in codex32. For BIP-0039 this process is irreversible, since it involves hashing the original words. Furthermore, the resulting seed will be 512 bits long, which may be too large to be safely and conveniently handled. SLIP-0039 seed words can be reversibly converted to master seeds, so it is possible to interconvert between SLIP-0039 and codex32. However, SLIP-0039 '''shares''' cannot be converted to codex32 shares because the two schemes use a different underlying field. The authors of this BIP do not recommend interconversion. From Jeffrey Epstein to Sam Bankman-Fried to Madoff – JPMorgan Banks the Creepy Crooks

Bloomberg News reported on the creepy emails that former JPMorgan Chase executive Jes Staley was sending back and forth from his email account at the bank to child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, as the bank was only too happy to handle 55 accounts worth hundreds of millions of dollars for Epstein. One set of emails suggested Staley was having kinky or sexual relationships with individuals dressed up as Disney characters. (Leave it to JPMorgan to take down not only its own brand but taint Disney’s brand as well.) Anyone who has ever worked at a major Wall Street brokerage firm or investment bank knows full well that emails are monitored by the company. This suggests that Staley knew he had nothing to fear from the bank’s email monitors. A 2019 investigation conducted by Wall Street On Parade indicated that Epstein’s ties to JPMorgan Chase date back to at least 2001, when Epstein presided as Chairman over an offshore company incorporated in Bermuda called Liquid Funding Ltd. That company grew to at least $6.7 billion in outstanding liabilities. JPMorgan Chase was one of three banks providing a $250 million liquidity facility to Liquid Funding Ltd. JPMorgan Chase was also listed as its “Security Trustee.” Liquid Funding appeared to be propping up dodgy subprime mortgage dealers by giving them loans. Bear Stearns, where Epstein had worked from 1976 to 1981, owned 40 percent of the equity in the company. If the Bloomberg News article wasn’t enough repulsion for one day, the New York Times reported yesterday that “JPMorgan holds $400 million that FTX’s founder, Sam Bankman-Fried, invested in an obscure hedge fund, Modulo Capital….” Since federal regulators allege that all of Bankman-Fried’s wealth comes from equity investors he defrauded or the looted accounts of his crypto customers, it appears that, once again, JPMorgan Chase has failed miserably in conducting proper due diligence on its customers, or has simply chosen to look the other way as it did during Bernie Madoff’s decades at the bank. (Bankman-Fried has pleaded innocent to an eight-count indictment. Two of his former top executives, however, Caroline Ellison and Gary Wang, have pleased guilty to similar charges and are cooperating with federal prosecutors.) One would think that the two criminal felony counts that JPMorgan Chase was hit with by the U.S. Department of Justice in 2014 in the Madoff Ponzi scheme matter might have changed its jaded ways. (It didn’t.) The layers of fraud taking place between the bank and Madoff resembled Russian Nesting Dolls – frauds within frauds – as we detailed in our investigation in 2014. The bank even loaned Madoff’s “business” $145 million in 2005 and 2006, which helped to prop up his Ponzi scheme when it was on the verge of collapsing. When the revolting details of the relationship between the bank and Madoff surfaced, the Los Angeles Times made an astute query in a photo caption of a smirking Madoff, asking: “Bernie Madoff: Was he part of the JPMorgan ring, or was JPMorgan part of his ring?” Two trial lawyers literally wrote the book in answering that question. In JPMadoff: The Unholy Alliance Between America’s Biggest Bank and America’s Biggest Crook, Helen Davis Chaitman and Lance Gotthoffer argue that RICO, the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, is “the perfect tool” to bring JPMorgan to heel. The lawyers explain: “In enacting RICO, Congress meant business. This powerful law enforcement weapon requires proof that the defendant committed ‘at least two acts of racketeering activity’ within a ten year period, that are related to financial gain. The predicate acts are drawn from a list of 27 federal and eight state law crimes. They include the typical mob crimes like murder, kidnapping, gambling, arson, robbery, extortion, and drug dealing. But the predicate acts also include a lot of the crimes committed by Wall Street banksters in order to enrich themselves at the expense of others, such as bribery, mail and wire fraud, fraud in the sale of securities, embezzlement, financial institution fraud, obstruction of justice, tampering with or retaliating against a witness, victim or informant, and money laundering.” Yesterday’s Bloomberg News article about Jes Staley’s sick emails to Epstein are derived from a lawsuit brought against JPMorgan Chase by the government of the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Epstein owned a secluded island compound. The lawsuit alleges the following: “For two decades, Defendant JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. (‘JPMorgan’) facilitated and sustained Jeffrey Epstein’s sex-trafficking by handling and [redacted] his payments to young women and girls who were his victims and recruiters. Sex-trafficking was the principal business of Epstein’s accounts held by JPMorgan, and JPMorgan profited handsomely from the hundreds of millions of dollars in assets in those accounts, in addition to Epstein’s connections and referrals of ultrawealthy and powerful clients.” What’s curious about the above paragraph is that the redacted portion appears to be only a one-word redaction. Let’s face it, those two sentences are absolutely devastating to the largest bank in the United States, so what one word could be so much worse that it needs to be blacked out for public digestion? Try finding a word that fit’s in that phrase: “…by handling and [redacted] his payments to young women and girls who were his victims and recruiters.” The dangerous word can’t be “facilitating” because that word appears unredacted throughout the lawsuit in describing the role JPMorgan Chase played in payments to Epstein’s victims. The unredacted words “handling” and “facilitating” suggest an enabler but not a direct participant in the crime. Words like “making” or “processing” on the other hand, sound like direct participation in the crime. As for those creepy references to Disney characters, the Virgin Islands’ lawsuit shares this: “In July 2010, Staley emailed Epstein saying ‘That was fun. Say hi to Snow White[,]’ to which Epstein responded ‘[W]hat character would you like next?’ and Staley said ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ Epstein also emailed Staley photos of young women in seductive poses. Following the internal reports of additional law enforcement investigations into Epstein’s sex-trafficking in 2010 and 2011, JPMorgan’s response was to send Staley in 2011 to obtain Epstein’s denial, on which the bank hung its hat.” And there is this: “Throughout its relationship with Epstein, JPMorgan’s internal investigation teams identified evidence that he was engaged in criminal sex-trafficking. In 2006, JPMorgan’s Global Corporate Security Division reported that Epstein was indicted in Florida for felony solicitation of minors for prostitution. In 2008, Epstein pled guilty in Florida to solicitation or procurement of a minor for prostitution and became a registered sex offender. JPMorgan’s continued relationship with Epstein after his criminal plea was reviewed and approved at the highest levels of the bank. An August 2008 internal email states, ‘I would count Epstein’s assets as a probable outflow for ’08 ($120mm or so?) as I can’t imagine it will stay (pending Dimon review).’ Yet the assets did stay [redacted text]. In 2010, JPMorgan’s risk management division discussed new allegations of an investigation of Epstein involving child sex-trafficking. Throughout 2010 and 2011, JPMorgan’s compliance and security divisions reported evidence of Epstein’s engagement in sex-trafficking, including his settlement of a dozen civil lawsuits and his payments of $1 million to the MC2 modeling agency engaged with Epstein in child sex-trafficking, ‘luring’ girls on the pretext of providing modeling opportunities and careers.” Given the five criminal felony counts that the U.S. Department of Justice has brought against JPMorgan Chase in the past nine years and its institutional knowledge of the crimes this bank is willing to tolerate in its search for profits, one has to ask this: why is the government of the U.S. Virgin Islands bringing these charges instead of the government of the United States? All they have to do is buy Bitcoin, then make an announcement that there is no further ruling on crypto for the next year, and watch their coins jump 10%. FTX Bankruptcy Judge to Rule Today on an Independent Examiner – After 76 Days of Delay

Dorsey (2016 Photo from Internet Archives’ Wayback Machine) Judge John Dorsey is the presiding judge in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware where Sam Bankman-Fried’s collapsed crypto exchange, FTX, filed its Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition. The U.S. Trustee, who provides oversight on behalf of the U.S. Department of Justice in bankruptcy cases, filed a motion on December 1 of last year requesting the appointment of an independent examiner in the FTX bankruptcy case, reminding the court that the appointment is mandatory under bankruptcy law if requested by the U.S. Trustee and debts exceed $5 million. Today marks the 76th day that this critical issue has been pending before this court. The Big Law firm, Sullivan & Cromwell, for whom Judge Dorsey signed an order making it lead counsel in the FTX bankruptcy case, despite a mountain of conflicts of interest, has argued aggressively against the appointment of the independent examiner. Both sides argued their positions at a hearing on February 6. Instead of ruling from the bench on the issue as was expected at the hearing, Judge Dorsey called attorneys for both sides into his chambers and stated that he was taking a recess. But instead of a recess, the hearing was adjourned. Reports later indicated that Judge Dorsey had asked the lawyers on both sides to see if they could come to an agreement, which would have negated his need to issue a bench ruling. Damian Williams, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and the federal prosecutor in charge of the criminal case against Sam Bankman-Fried, has called FTX “one of the biggest financial frauds in American history.” Testimony to the House Financial Services Committee by John Ray, the new CEO of FTX, acknowledged that $8 billion of customer funds are missing. It might not look too good for a Judge to rule against the appointment of an independent examiner in such a massive fraud case while allowing a viper’s nest of conflicts to swirl around the lead counsel. In addition, 18 states have sided with the U.S. Trustee on the need for an independent examiner in this case. Yesterday, an amended agenda was published for an FTX hearing that will take place this morning in Judge Dorsey’s courtroom on various other matters. The final item on that agenda indicates that the judge “will issue a bench ruling” at this hearing on the U.S. Trustee’s request for an independent examiner. There was something quite odd about the amended agenda, however. Instead of listing all of the related documents pertaining to the U.S. Trustee’s request for an independent examiner, as the agenda has done on other matters, it listed only the initial request dated December 1. It did not list the docket entries for the objections; for the support from various state attorneys general and state securities regulators; and it failed to list the February 1 “Omnibus Reply” by the U.S. Trustee which went to excruciating lengths to parse the statutory language of the relevant bankruptcy law to make clear that the appointment of an independent examiner is “mandatory” in this case. The U.S. Trustee further noted the following: “…the majority of courts that have addressed the issue in published opinions—including the only court of appeals decision and all of the district court decisions—have ruled that the appointment of an examiner is mandatory under section 1104(c)(2).” In the U.S. Trustee’s initial request on December 1, the following was also pointed out: “An investigation by an examiner into the alleged conversion by the FTX Trading arm of the Debtors of $10 billion of customers’ property to lend to its affiliate Alameda [Sam Bankman-Fried’s hedge fund], in violation of the express provisions in FTX’s customer contracts, and into the use of software to conceal such misuse is unquestionably in the interests of the Debtors’ creditors and other interests of the estates. The many instances of what Mr. Ray describes as a ‘complete failure of corporate controls and [] a complete absence of trustworthy financial information as occurred here’ (Ray ¶ 5), such as those detailed in paragraph 30 of this Motion, also warrant examination. “An appointment of an examiner would also be in the interests of the Debtors’ creditors and other parties in interest in the Debtors’ estates, consistent with Code section 1104(c)(1), because there is an actual conflict of interest between Debtors FTX Trading Ltd. and Alameda Research. FTX Trading has a claim against Alameda Research in the billions of dollars on behalf of its customers in connection with one or more loans of allegedly converted customer funds that FTX Trading had no right to make in the first instance. Such an immense, out-of-the-ordinary course claim of one Debtor against another, especially one that involves the alleged conversion of customer funds, calls out for independent scrutiny by an independent examiner.” Sullivan & Cromwell is serving as lead counsel in the bankruptcy proceeding for the FTX “Group,” which includes FTX, Alameda Research, and more than 100 opaque affiliates, many of which were registered offshore. In a 2022 Voyager Digital deal, Sullivan & Cromwell was simultaneously representing Alameda Research and FTX, prior to the FTX bankruptcy filing. Further raising eyebrows in legal circles, an email has now surfaced in the Voyager bankruptcy case, written by Sullivan & Cromwell partner, Andrew Dietderich, (who is also active in the FTX bankruptcy case) where he tells lawyers on the other side of the Voyager deal that “FTX is rock solid.” That email came just four days before FTX filed bankruptcy. And as we detailed on Monday, Sullivan & Cromwell’s conflicts in the BlockFi matter are also beyond the pale. Sullivan & Cromwell is also finding it difficult to finesse its way around how to deal with the fact that its former law partner, Ryne Miller, became General Counsel at FTX US in August of 2021. According to recent documents filed by John Ray, Miller remains on salary at the FTX Group. And, according to the recent detailed compensation request filed with the bankruptcy court by Sullivan & Cromwell for $7.6 million in legal fees for the 19-day span from November 12 through November 30 of last year, various current law partners at Sullivan & Cromwell were including Miller in their phone calls regarding the FTX bankruptcy case. Against that backdrop comes a docket entry yesterday indicating that Gary Wang, the indicted co-founder of FTX who has pleaded guilty, has been subpoenaed to appear at the Manhattan law offices of Sullivan & Cromwell tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. and to produce various documents. One document request asks for “All documents concerning payment by any entity within the FTX Group for any goods or services for the use or benefit of you or any of the following individuals.” One of the persons on the 17-person list is (wait for it) Ryne Miller. Needless to say, there is much legal interest in how Judge Dorsey rules today on the issue of an independent examiner.
