Anderson noted that because Assange "wanted to look good" for her, he wore two pairs of sweat pants in an effort to mask his weight loss. "He feels like people won't fight for people if they’re not resilient, and he is the most resilient person I’ve ever met," she said. The charges were subsequently dropped, but Swedish authorities announced they were reopening their investigation in May. After seven years of hiding at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, Assange was arrested by United Kingdom authorities in April. Nearly one month later in May 1, Assange was sentenced to 50 weeks in prison at Southwark Crown Court in central London. He read a letter to the court apologizing to those who "consider I have disrespected them," adding that he had struggled in difficult circumstances. Following the London arrest, federal U.S. prosecutors unsealed an indictment against him, charging him for allegedly conspiring with former intelligence officer Chelsea Manning in an effort to unlawfully gain access to a government computer in 2010. The breach is considered one of the largest thefts of classified government information in American history. Assange as well as his supporters have claimed he had no role in hacking Democratic documents or harvesting other government secrets, maintaining that he functioned as a journalist and publisher. The charges against Assange continue to raise concerns about the ripple effects it will have on press freedom.

This conclusion opened the intense race to find low-loss materials and suitable fibres for reaching such criteria.[citation needed] Kao, together with his new team (members including T. W. Davies, M. W. Jones, and C. R. Wright), pursued this goal by testing various materials. They precisely measured the attenuation of light with different wavelengths in glasses and other materials. During this period, Kao pointed out that the high purity of fused silica (SiO2) made it an ideal candidate for optical communication. Kao also stated that the impurity of glass material is the main cause for the dramatic decay of light transmission inside glass fibre, rather than fundamental physical effects such as scattering as many physicists thought at that time, and such impurity could be removed. This led to a worldwide study and production of high-purity glass fibres. When Kao first proposed that such glass fibre could be used for long-distance information transfer and could replace copper wires which were used for telecommunication during that era, his ideas were widely disbelieved; later people realized that Kao's ideas revolutionized the whole communication technology and industry.[50] He also played a leading role in the early stage of engineering and commercial realization of optical communication.[51] In spring 1966, Kao traveled to the U.S. but failed to interest Bell Labs, which was a competitor of STL in communication technology at that time.[52] He subsequently traveled to Japan and gained support.[52] Kao visited many glass and polymer factories, discussed with various people including engineers, scientists, businessmen about the techniques and improvement of glass fiber manufacture. In 1969, Kao with M. W. Jones measured the intrinsic loss of bulk-fused silica at 4 dB/km, which is the first evidence of ultra-transparent glass. Bell Labs started considering fibre optics seriously.[52][end of quote] Of course, neither Kao nor any of his industry recognized what I eventually did: that even after modern-purified fused-silica was produced, there were still a few more sources of impurity in that, and that included Si-29 and Ge-73 isotopes. I fully expect that when these 'spin'-containing isotopic sources are removed, the silica single-mode fiber loss will drop to 0.001 dB/kilometer, about 150x lower than it currently is. Jim Bell

(fiber optics). https://global-sei.com/products/optical-fiber/ Sumitomo Electric has the distinction of having achieved the world record for optical waveguide loss, currently about 0.1419 dB/kilometer at 1560 nanometers. (This is apparently a laboratory result, not production.) https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/stamp/stamp.jsp?arnumber=8267035 It beats one of its biggest competitors, Corning https://www.corning.com/worldwide/en/products/communication-networks/produc… primarily because Sumitomo employs a pure-silica fiber core, with a fluorine-doped cladding, whereas Corning has long employed a pure-silica cladding, with the core doped with germanium. One of Sumitomo's fibers, Z+150 has a production loss of 0.152 dB/km One of Corning's fibers, has a specified loss of less than 0.17 dB/km at 1550 nanometers wavelength. (A production result, not laboratory.) Into this 30 year+ competition I come, like a veritable bull in the technical china-shop. I got the attention of Sumitomo by using LinkedIn to send about 100 of their employees on Monday (as well as a couple thousand others at Corning, YOFC, OFS, Prysmian, ZTT, Hengtong, Nokia, Fujikura, Furukawa, Futong, Fiberhome, Ciena, Huawei Marine, and SubCom) a statement: "Your company should be selling a silica single-mode optical waveguide with a loss of 0.001 dB/kilometer.
