Malicious, targeted, OS updates. How likely do you think it is?

A few days ago, I was thinking about ways to compromise even the most secure systems and I came across a fairly obvious way: through operating system updates. I admit that I am not up to date on the latest security research so please excuse me if this has been discussed before or is 'common knowledge'. What's stopping the FBI or other US law enforcement agency from compelling a US based operating system vendor, let's say Red Hat, from delivering a specialized update to a user that would allow the agency privileged and maybe even undetectable access to a target system? Since Red Hat has root on our systems, they could install whatever they want and most users wouldn't notice. For a company like Red Hat, it would be trivial since they know who you are as you are tied to your Red Hat subscription But this is by no means limited to them. Microsoft could do this too with a little more work. What are your thoughts? Am I crazy? Is this a 'well, we KNOW THAT already' moment that I am just catching up on? Thanks! Free "Anarcho-Syndicalist" State of Fiume

I had never heard of Fiume, formerly an Italian city, now a Croatian city called Rijeka, which apparently ran for several years after WWI with a more-or-less legit "Anarchist" (Anarcho-Syndacilist) constitution (if such a thing isn't a self-contradiction). Bruce Stering's latest novella "Pirate Utopia" turned me on to the existence of the historical "Free State of Fiume". I've just barely cracked the book open, although I am much looking forward to devouring it, but it seems to be an alternate history "diesel-punk" story focused on Fiume and the possibilites of anarchy and technology (albeit WWI-era tech). The inflammatory pre-election press release from the Obama Administration's Department of Homeland Security was followed up by numerous placements in the U.S. press, a constellation of assertions consistent this template: A reporter says an anonymous source claimed an unnamed senior intelligence official told them that unspecified secret information confirms Russian involvement in releasing incriminating DNC e-mails to Wikileaks. The timing, context and follow-on promotion of the DHS press release blaming the leak on Russia indicate it was a component of a larger campaign by the DNC on behalf of the Clinton campaign, intended to demonize Trump by depicting his stated willingness to negotiate with Russia as proof of collaboration with a foreign enemy. Post-election, the DHS press release became the rarely-cited but always referenced cornerstone of a separate campaign asserting that the election was stolen by Russia and Trump.
