Having talked to a teenager who was educated in a Christian school, she was definitely taught according to an anti-science viewpoint—that you can’t trust anything scientists say, because they have their own self-serving motives for saying these things. (This may actually be true to a much lesser degree—look at the string theory apologists. But the best lies contain an element of truth.) And I have to assume that this viewpoint is reasonably common among evangelical Christians, who make up around a third of the U.S. population.

https://www.quantamagazine.org/researchers-identify-master-problem-underlyi… In 1868, the mathematician Charles Dodgson (better known as Lewis Carroll) proclaimed that an encryption scheme called the Vigenère cipher was “unbreakable.” He had no proof, but he had compelling reasons for his belief, since mathematicians had been trying unsuccessfully to break the cipher for more than three centuries. There was just one small problem: A German infantry officer named Friedrich Kasiski had, in fact, broken it five years earlier, in a book that garnered little notice at the time. Cryptographers have been playing this game of cat and mouse, creating and breaking ciphers, for as long as people have been sending secret information. “For thousands of years, people [have been] trying to figure out, ‘Can we break the cycle?’” said Rafael Pass, a cryptographer at Cornell Tech and Cornell University. Five decades ago, cryptographers took a huge step in this direction. They showed that it’s possible to create provably secure ciphers if you have access to a single ingredient: a “one-way function,” something that’s easy to carry out but hard to reverse. Since then, researchers have devised a wide array of candidate one-way functions, from simple operations based on multiplication to more complicated geometric or logarithmic procedures. Today, the internet protocols for tasks like transmitting credit card numbers and digital signatures depend on these functions. “Most of the crypto that is used in the real world is something that can be based on one-way functions,” said Yuval Ishai, a cryptographer at the Technion in Haifa, Israel. ....

But after 10 minutes into the flight, the pilots decided to return towards San Jose to enter a holding pattern for about 25 minutes. Communication between the pilots and the tower indicate that the aircraft suffered a hydraulic problem. The pilots then decided to land at San Jose, but during the landing the aircraft went off the side of the runway. The Boeing 757 subsequently broke apart while coming to a complete stop. Rescue services rushed to the aircraft, initial reports suggest nobody got seriously injured. DHL Aero Expreso S.A. is a cargo airline based out of Panama City, Panama. It is wholly owned by Deutsche Post World Net and operates the group’s DHL-branded parcel and express services in Central and South America. life is an attempt to rise against the force of gravity to show the universe, that after trillions of years of crushing into spheres, our planet has learned to solve that problem. to keep life, intelligence, and wild interconnection, growing and spreading, and thinking and being -- despite the weight of billions of tons of carbon. I was thinking of names for the logic analyser I can barely turn my body toward. first I thought of "shitty logic analyzer" or "crappy logic analyzer". "crappy" , like the toilet flushing of beautiful hopes and dreams. "trashy logic analyzer" . but I don't like the focus on things like "trash" even existing. some _people_ are called trash. meanwhile we throw a bunch of useful stuff out all the time. useful stuff like my rtlsdr that could be a 2MHz logic probe! so then I was thinking of inverting the culture. names like "logic analyzer of the ousted dictator's secret service" "king's logic analyzer" "monarch's spy network logic analyzer" "billionaire's logic analyzer" "classified logic level project recovered from bombed bunker" then there are other names that cross things or add more fluffy stuff. things like "classified destiny probe and design toolkit" "monarch's bowel and lower intestine deep in-depth network analyzer" "time traveling wormhole inspector" this project started as a very normal daydream eight years ago. meanwhile, I see that nobody is really [crossed out:-making-] _finishing_ these obvious things. meanwhile they're being _made_ everywhere. time traveling butt wormhole project of the old dynasty's secret service. king's recycling program. basically it lets you take crummy things you find in a discarded electronics bin by visiting the dump after hours, and combine them to make tools to figure out how they work and repurpose them. it solves the chicken and egg problem by casting hatching as laying and vice versa.
