Turn it off in Tools->Options->E-mail Preferences->Tracking.  The
capability to request receipts has been in the software for several
years.  Some large percentage of users consider it a feature; you can
turn it off completely if you're not one of them.

messages, INFORMing me who is reading the messages I send, who is
deleting them, and RoadMaps to their Homes and WorkPlaces...

(OK, I just made the last part up, eh?)
