One part of the mind interpreting safe things as extremely extremely dangerous, possibly because it is responsible for protecting the self in areas that are hard for it to distinguish from the safe things. Another part of the mind acting in unwise ways, influencing other parts of the mind subtly or strategically, towards ends that are self-destructive or harmful to the whole.
