[rm-wg] Basic Executions Service (Batch Job) State Transitions

Dave,

Attached is a modified version that maps the BES life cycle more to your cycle. Indeed I had come to exactly the same conclusion that you had - i.e. that transitions to a terminal state that do not pass through the Extant (or whatever) state don't make much sense.

So in the diagram you see Configured and Pending. Pending is *really* a substate of Configured that meets all of the conditions of Configured but in which the GME has a policy of whatever indicating that the start time is defined absolutely or relative to the completion of other work. When I have more time I work these into sub-states.

Also I was thinking that what messed me about with regards to Failed or Finished was that they should be sub-states of Configured, whereas they could be sub-states of Extant, i.e. that in both cases if the work is to be repeated/retried, configuring or reconfiguring (repair, reset) has to be undertaken. This would seem to make more sense.

Anyway, although we don;t have too many diagrams, I have found that doing on has certainly been successful in challenging my previous assumptions and in providing plenty of topics for discussion this afternoon.

Regards
Paul

Paul,

My concern with this model is that most of the termination
transitions (Cancel, Completion, Failed) instantly take the instance
out of the manageability domain. This is one of the reasons I waned
the Finished State in my model. It is a manageable state, on the way
to destruction or complete re-commissioning.

PS: I might be able to drop NotReady from the model and make it a
substate of Commisioned.
