Advances in IP-Optical Networking for IP Quad-play Traffic and Services
Elsevier Journal of Optical Switching and Networking
Guest Editors: Masum Hasan, Cisco Systems, and Admela Jukan, EMT-INRS, Univ of Quebec
As quad-play (data, voice, video and mobile communications) and high-performance computing (HPC) traffic are proliferating and converging on to public (Internet), private, enterprise or service providers' IP networking infrastructure, there is need for new generation of networking infrastructure and relevant management of the enhanced infrastructure. This new generation network will include converged architectures of IP and Optical networking (IP-Optical). Optical networks are not to be anymore considered “peddlers of terabytes” but an intelligent and integral part of the overall network infrastructure. In this intelligent IP-Optical architecture, the traditional client-server model will transition to the control-plane based network with support for, among other features, automated end-to-end traffic engineering, comprehensive QoS and IP-over-DWDM.
For the advance capabilities of optical networks to flourish, the research community has to fundamentally rethink current architectures and protocols. This special issue is calling for papers which address this rethinking precisely, with promise to bring fundamental changes in optical networking architecture, protocol and management.
The authors are encouraged to submit original papers on topics related to the concepts described above, including, but not limited to:
• Novel IP-optical architectures
• Novel IP-Optical management paradigms
• Affect of Quad-play on current networks
• Quad-play service management on IP-Optical networks
• Streaming, real-time interactive, live broadcast video traffic and optical networking
• Novel architectures for peer-to-peer streaming over optical networks
• Integration of optical and next generation wireless networks
• User-generated high-volume multimedia content and the role of optical networking
• Multi-layer interactions in support of optical services
• Security of optical services, control and management planes
• Issues of transport protocols for optical connections
• Regulations and economics
• Testbeds and field trials
