USA 2020 Elections: Thread

Just like how your position on the effect of voter IDs is determined
entirely by whether or not you think voter fraud exists -- and how either
way you view the opposing side as attacking democracy -- how we handle
asylum seekers and illegal immigrants at the border is largely dictated by
what you think of the people coming over the border.

If you think they are largely criminals or freeloaders (with a few good
exceptions) looking to dilute the purity of our people, then it makes sense
to build walls and panic when people climb them.

On the other hand, if you view immigrants -- even illegal immigrants -- as
largely the key to our future prosperity (with a few bad exceptions), then
you want all the migrants you can get.

Every single developed nation in the world is shrinking, and immigration is
the only thing keeping our nation growing. The population within our
borders has too low a birth rate to sustain itself, and most of our social
systems depend on a high ratio of workers to retirees -- a ratio that would
be catastrophically bad were it not for immigtration.

Furthermore, every single "undeveloped" nation is seeing population growth
decelerate dramatically. World population is going to peak in 2050 (if not
sooner -- birth rates are dropping with shocking rapidity everywhere; 2020
is the least growth in recorded history), and then go down, forever.
Everything we've come to know about population growth and its second order
effects -- the constant influx of new people to cities, constant hammering
of new construction, the constant complaints about traffic getting worse as
people come from "somewhere else" to your town. All that's going to stop,
in your lifetime. And all the economic growth that comes from building
those new buildings, building those new cars -- all that's going to stop,
too.

Winning the "human race" largely means having the most humans, and the
youngest humans. Immigration is the most powerful tool we have as a nation
to ensure our future success relative to other countries that have larger,
younger workforces than we do. And before you turn to automation to save
us, consider: do you own those robots? If not, why do you think you are
going to benefit from their advances?

We're in for a wild ride, and we're going to rue the day we turned down
young immigrants eager to work hard and build a better life, simply because
of a line on a map.
