Infinite self parody - 'Techno-Thwarting The State'
"Within a few years, it should be economically feasible to similarly encrypt voice communications; soon after that, full-color digitized video images. Technology will not only have made wiretapping obsolete, it will have totally demolished government’s control over information transfer" "The LiberTech Project does not advocate, participate in, or conspire in the violation of any law—no matter how oppressive, unconstitutional or simply stupid such law may be."

Well, that was the kind of predictable caveat that we are not surprised was thought to be necessary...32 years ago. What ultimately happened to ME explains why Hamill wasn't acting unreasonably. And why I don't resent Bill Frezza kicking the idea off Digitaliberty so soon. The issue there was getting the idea out, which Hamill did. Jim Bell

Well, trying to fight against the govt, alone, isn't too reasonable, though it's certainly courageous. On the other hand, hamill's disclaimer seems rather cowardly. But anyway, it was a side note. What I think is more important is his hilariously wrong 'prediction' about 'technology' making wiretapping 'obsolete'.

The key words are "economically feasible". He didn't say it would happen as soon or readily as the economics would seem to have allowed, We went through the 'Clipper Chip" thing in 1993, which died a fairly quick death by maybe 1995. Today, not only could I make phone calls that are encrypted, as well as video calls (encrypted?), I could do so from a tiny, battery-powered cordless smartphone that works just about anywhere most people live. I'd say Hamill did an excellent job of prognosticating in 1987. If you want to blame somebody for failing to deliver on a promised technical advance, blame AT+T for predicting the "Picturephone" product at the 1964 World's Fair. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzdCKBZP4Jo Jim Bell

As the subject states, it is infinite self-parody. Involuntary self-parody. Did you get this message I posted yesterday? https://lists.cpunks.org/pipermail/cypherpunks/2019-November/077494.html

he states that in a few year wiretapping will be obsolete. And the claim is a highly stupid joke, flatly refuted by reality. NEWSFLASH FOR YOU JIM : We live in a global surveillance state thanks to 'cheap microelectronics'.
"One of the clearest, classic triumphs of technology over tyranny I see is the invention of the man-portable crossbow. With it, an untrained peasant could now reliably and lethally engage a target out to fifty meters – even if that target were a mounted, chain-mailed knight" That's another, clear, shining example of unhinged delusional garbage from hammill. Anybody with 2 brain cells can make the following observations : 1) crossbows, line any other weapon can be used by ANYONE. Meaning, the merchants and manufacturers used crossbows to exterminate the peasants who tried to oppose. 2) ...'knights' used crossbows to exterminate peasants, too. Knights working for merchants and manufacturers. 3) peasants, pretty much by definition, couldn't afford crossbows. 4) crossbows are MORE EXPENSIVE than simple bows. They are indeed yet another perfect example of a more complex tool that shifts the balance of power to FUCKING TECHNOCRATS. 5) crossbows are easier to use than ordinary bows. That advantage is irrelvant as far as balance of power goes. It simply means that now GOVCORP ARMIES HAVE BETTER WEAPONS. "an untrained peasant could now reliably and lethally engage a target out to fifty meters" exactly like a govcorp agent could. Except, the peasant didn't have a crossbow.

"One of the clearest, classic triumphs of technology over tyranny I see is the invention of the man-portable crossbow. With it, an untrained peasant could now reliably and lethally engage a target out to fifty meters – even if that target were a mounted, chain-mailed knight" The references to peasants and 'chain-mailed knights' suggest that for some absurd reason hammill believed that crowssbows were a european (peasant...) invention from the middle ages. In reality they were invented in china some 2700 years ago, and were used by armies since then. Which means, tyrants have used crossbows to kill peasants for more than two thousand years. Hey Jim, you might want to do a minimal amount of research and critical thinking before assuming that any of the garbage that the randroid hammill spouted made any sense or had any truth in it.
http://www.historyofarchery.com/archery-history/history-of-crossbows/ It is not known for sure when the first crossbows appeared. It is speculated that the Chinese made the first crossbows before the 6th century BC and it is know for sure that they used them during the Warring States period in the 4th century BC. The earliest handheld crossbow stocks with a bronze trigger were found in Tombs 3 and 12 at Qufu, Shandong, capital of the State of Lu and date from 6th century BC. Repeating crossbows that could fire more bolts without the need to feed the crossbow by hand, were first mentioned in the Records of the Three Kingdoms, were found in 1986 in Tomb 47 at Qinjiazui, Hubei Province, and originate from the 4th century BC. Chinese also used crossbow catapults at the same time. Sun Tzu's mentioned use of crossbows in his book “The Art of War”. Chinese military manuscript “Wujing Zongyao” from 1044 says that the cross bow was the most effective weapon against northern nomadic cavalry charges. Crossbow appeared in Europe in the shape of “gastraphetes”, an ancient Greek crossbow. It was described for the first time in the 1st century by the Greek author Heron of Alexandria in his work “Belopoeica” and it was different from the Chinese crossbow in a way they were cocked. Heron said that gastraphetes appeared for the first time in 5th century and were used in the Siege of Motya in 397 BC. Crossbow was also popular weapon in Medieval times so much that they almost replaced standard bow and arrow. Longbows could shoot as precise as crossbows and faster them but soldiers could shoot with crossbows with less training and be as proficient in less time. Later crossbows called arbalests had steel bow and could shoot further and with more penetration strength than longbows but were more expensive to make and slower to reload. In the armies of Europe crossbowmen held a central position in battle formations. They attacked the enemy before an assault of mounted knights and protect their infantry. They were held in so high esteem that they were paid higher than other foot soldiers and in some armies were granted status on par with the knightly class. New drawing mechanisms like pushlever and ratchet enabled the use of crossbows on horseback but crossbows fell out of favor in 16th century when firearms appeared on the battlefields.

About 22 years ago, I got an idea for a backpack-supported ultra-high pressure waterjet cutter "sword". Already have the motto: "Don't just slay them, fillet them!"
