i downloaded the neomutt sources and tried to build them and looked up mbox and maildir formats
it looks like mbox and maildir are likely for _individual local mailboxes_ like inbox, sent, etc. could be wrong mbox: emails all start with From_ linr and concatenated together maildir: directory of new, tmp, cur 1 file per email, no From_ line
email program moves files from new to cur to indicate shown to user filenames in cur have added special suffix backend programs add mails to new tmp is used as work storage by any i think could be wrong
both seem likely intended to be mostly intuitive. mbox seems a little more self-documenting (no unique filenames needed) but they both mostly are.
