Look at what he actually specifies: subheadings, indented paragraphs, in-text APA citations, submitted as a PDF, graded 6 of 10 points on textbook comprehension. Two-thirds of the grade is "here's a concept from Chapter 1, here's what the book says about it, here's my citation." That's a short structured essay. There are seven of them, one every two weeks. There is no daily practice, no requirement that entries connect to each other emotionally, no requirement that you be the same person writing entry 3 as entry 2. It's a form you fill in with sentences. The parts that resemble journaling — Integration, Self-Care — are 2 points each, and he explicitly says "I haven't thought about self-care!" meets the requirement.
