But the Earth is doomed, anyway, in 5 billion years. And we have either the grand crunch or the heat death of the universe to contend with after that. Hopeless.

The religious right is working to get a law passed to prevent this from happening, since it is evolutionary hocus-pocus that goes against belief in God as the Creator. The law will no doubt be nullified by the Supreme Court as violating the separation of church and state.
