No, of course they were using the -a option and the mail was normal ASCII armoured.
Some of the FIDO and FIDO-like networks have policies against sending encrypted email. I don't know if this means their operators actually read the messages that go by, or do pattern-matching to look for "BEGIN PGP" or whatever, but they at least have that policy.
