[sn-cg] Call minute report - 17/10/06

Vincent Franceschini Vincent.Franceschini at hds.com
Tue Oct 17 12:13:52 CDT 2006

Attendees:

-          Chris Kantarjiev - Oracle

-          Alan Yoder - NetApp

- Vincent Franceschini - Hitachi Data Systems

Agenda:

*	Storage GME project,

	*	Review of last week AI's.

We reviewed some of the materials developed by the EGR-RG, but did not
find a grid application example that we could also leverage for testing
the SMGE prototype.

Alan suggested that may be we could simply try to work on basic
functionality scenarios such as COW, or writeable snapshots that could
be managed by an SGME. This is applicable locally, but for remote
systems, standard scheduled data duplicate function would be enough.
This needs to be detailed.

Chris confirmed that allocating new storage resource and migrating data
for new software testing remains a valid use-case scenario.

AI's remains the same as last week's.

Next call, same time next week.

Thanks,

Vincent.

Importance: High

Attendees:

-          Chris Kantarjiev - Oracle

- Fred Maciel - Hitachi Ltd

-          Alan Yoder - NetApp

- Ken Wood - Hitachi Data Systems

- Vincent Franceschini - Hitachi Data Systems

Agenda: Storage GME project.

Please let me know if any elements from the call are missing.

Vincent gave a summary of the discussion in Washington/GGF18 that has
led to considering the Storage Grid Management Entity project.

The SGME project has been defined as follows:

- Definition of Basic Storage GME

o Based on Grid Management Entity concept developed by EGA

*         See EGA Reference Model

- Applied to data storage elements in Grid

o Based on simple use cases (TBD)

o Simplification to file-level resource management to start with

-          Work scope would include

o        S-GME Specification development

o        S-GME prototyping

- In full collaboration with SNIA Grid Initiative

Vincent & Ken gave an overview of the first thoughts for the SMGE simple
use case:

1. Simple case

* Discover storage and available capacities

* Provision and setup xTB of scratch/temporary capacity for
given task per compute node

*          Provide location (exported mountpoint)

* scheduled task runs to completion

*          De-provision capacity

2. Additional capability

*          Apply a performance SLA

* Monitoring and rating of storage performance

* Rank performance of each storage container used

*          Report performance

* Decision: do not use slow container for next task

3. Advance capability

* Determine that the data stored in temporary area is important
(auditing, compliance, etc.) through an additional SLA

* Retain data after or during task completion via,

*          Remote copy

*          Cdp

*          Backup

*          Vtl

*          snap

*          Etc.

Alan asked that we identify relevant applications that would use large
scratch data space in order to suit the use case scenarios and for which
we could have access to some sample code to help with SMGE prototyping.
Examples given included: Weather forecast application, financial
simulation (Monte-Carlo...), Seismic image processing, software
development, digital studio application...

AI: For all of us to look for relevant concrete application examples.

Fred mentioned that the OGSA-Data WG had been working on general use
case that might be worth considering for the SMGE discussion.

AI: Fred to send links to relevant OGSA-Data documents.

We then looked into what we need in terms of use scenarios and came up
with 3 different options:

- 1 use case for a local resource (storage space)
allocation/de-allocation for the execution of a specific job. Can be a
multi-users / multi-application environment

- 1 use case for a remote job execution requiring a remote
resource allocation/de-allocation + some data transfer

- 1 use case for multiple job executions (multiple
applications) requiring concurrent resource allocation/de-allocation and
n-way data transfers.

AI: For Ken to start drafting the use cases, with help and inputs for
the team.

We decided to make this call a weekly call every Tuesday at 9amPDT. For
now, we will use the following call details (other free numbers are
available for other countries if necessary):

*	Conference participant passcode:584064
*	Freephone - France:       0800 970 299
*	Freephone - UK:            0800 028 0397
*	Freephone - USA:          1800 391 1781

Thank you.

Vincent.
