in conjunction with On The Move 2010
October 27-29, 2010

** Proceedings will be published by Springer Verlag **

Collaborative Distributed Virtual Environments (CDVE) enable
geographically distant users to echange information, communicate and
collaborate. CDVE are currently exploited in different areas, from
videoconferences, shared whiteboards and computer supported
collaborative work (CSCW) to distributed simulations like military or
civil protection distributed simulations for training and massively
multiplayer online games (MMOG). MMOG like World of Warcraft or Second
Life, are currently gaining increasingly attention in the software market.

Currently the client server model is still the reference computational
model for this kind of applications, but approaches based on the P2P
model have recently been proposed. In the client server architecture a
single server is responsible of guaranteeing the consistency and the
persistency of the state of the CDVE.
The server notifies the update of the state to the interested users. The
main disadvantages of this solution is the low level of robustness and
of scalability due to the presence of the single server.

The definition of a fully distributed architecture for CDVE is an actual
challenge because of the complexity of these applications which
integrate networks, graphics and AI techniques. On the other hand, the
adoption of a distributed computational model is mandatory to overcome
the low scalability of client server architectures. P2P architectures
are a promising alternative architecture for this kind of applications.
Several issues have to be solved to define a fully distributed
architecture for these applications. The most important are related, for
instance, to the management and the consistency of the state in a fully
distributed environment and to the security of the system.

Researcher from academy and industry are invited to submit a paper
related to
the following topics

P2P Overlays for Collaborative Distributed Virtual Environments
Scalability
State Consistency
State Persistency
Security and Privacy
Content Streaming
Cheating Prevention Techniques
Responsiveness
Hybrid Architetures
Implementation Issues
