Financing clean energy transition in EU Islands

There are more than 2200 inhabited islands in the EU. Despite having access to renewable sources of energy, such as wind and wave energy, many of them depend on expensive fossil fuel imports for their energy supply. SP19 will feature a session dedicated to financing clean energy transition in EU islands chaired by Margot Pinault (European Commission, DG Energy, unit C3). The workshop will include a presentation by Brendan Devlin (European Commission, DG Energy, Directorate B) of the ‘Clean energy for EU islands’ initiative which provides a long term framework to help islands generate their own sustainable, low-cost energy. Feilim O’Connor (European Commission DG Energy, Unit C2) will introduce an overview of H2020 islands-related calls for proposals. Practical examples of available funding and past-supported projects in EU islands will be highlighted by the European Investment Bank (Reinhard Six) and SINLOC (Andrea Martinez). The INNOVATE H2020 Project and its one-stop-shop service on buildings renovation being deployed in Cyprus will be presented and discussed (Panayiotis Michael, NTUA & Aradippou Municipality).

Pioneering and innovative sustainable islands: case studies and projects

SP19 will also offer further insights on how European islands can lead the energy transition from a technological and organizational perspective. This will include presentations of the Smart Island Initiative (DAFNI Network, Kostas Komninos), the actual implementation of smart energy management concepts in Sardinia (Prof. Alfonso Damiano, University of Cagliari & Sardegna Ricerche), as well as innovative technologies and demonstration cases from the H2020 projects REACT (R2M Solution), INSULAE (DAFNI) and SMILE (RINA-C).
Keynote Highlight

We are proud to welcome Dr. Karim Selouane, the Founder and CEO of Resallience as a keynote speaker at Sustainable Places. Created via Vinci’s LEONARD Innovation and Foresight Platform, Resallience is a design office dedicated to adapting cities, territories, infrastructures and their use to climate change – a risk all stakeholders must now address. Dr. Selouane experiences span academia, industry and support to policy makers regarding strategies for the management of climate risks to territories, cities and projects. He is active in UNHabitat and topic related working groups at the European Commission. He will be speaking on the tools and methodologies available today that lead to improved design, site selection and operations of infrastructures to increase the resilience of our cities and the infrastructures that support them.

Hop on the Sustainability Bus!

How to get around at SP2019? We suggest using the electric trolley bus made available be the CTM Cagliari (Consorzio Trasporti e Mobilità) to take SP2019 attendees from the Center to the Lazzarretto on 6 and 7 June using a morning and afternoon shuttle schedule. The SP2019 Sustainability Bus is a result of the Zero Emission Urban Bus System Project (ZEEUS) with the vision to extend fully-electric solutions to the core parts of urban bus networks using various electrification technologies. CTM Cagliari is a demonstration case in the ZEEUS and will be presenting its results during the event.

Thank you CTM! You can read more about the ZEEUS Project at [ www.zeeus.eu ]( http://2tuoh.r.a.d.sendibm1.com/mk/cl/f/lJMNjQpUZrRFMceLjchJe4PkqznV5RhfTFZth8NWZ91R1A4KFQ5BzG8UPA4GaEbPl5St6DmRhSupNc_nDah9vkyhNuH1YuZ_HMl9zzY08yJ1Gs0uBeOVkQlAl8NxNXU9vmHOuMTK5F-hrZYu_BhebYcy )
