Dear Colleagues

Please find below details of three upcoming events in e-Social Science
to be held in the UK including the First International Conference on
e-Social Science.

AGENDA SETTING WORKSHOPS IN E-SOCIAL SCIENCE

This ESRC/JISC workshop series aims to set the research agenda across a
range of themes connected with the development of e-social science. The
next two workshops are on the themes of Confidentiality and Ethics, and
Collaboration, Co-Laboratories and e-Research. See below for more
details.

Future workshop themes include: GIS and the Grid, Text Mining, Social
Simulation and Methods and Theory. See our website for further details
and materials from past workshops: http://www.ncess.ac.uk/events/agenda/

CONFIDENTIALITY AND ETHICS WORKSHOP

25 May 2005, University of Essex

--- Registration now open:
http://www.ncess.ac.uk/events/agenda/confidentiality/ ---

Health service providers and researchers are increasingly interested in
acquiring and joining data sources in order to get a more complete
picture of service needs and social phenomena. This opens new challenges
regarding patient confidentiality, data security (e.g. when transferred
on a network) and secondary use of data.

The workshop will use Learning Disabilities as an exemplar and aims to
engage all parties that are interested in identifying and overcoming
obstacles to the service, policy and research usage of joined
administrative and clinical data while protecting confidentiality and
citizens' rights.

The workshop is aimed at engaging service providers, policy makers and
researchers in order to discuss and better understand these issues. It
will start with some short presentations by experts and then use the
innovative iLab to develop common understandings of the key issues.

COLLABORATION, CO-LABORATORIES AND E-RESEARCH WORKSHOP

21 June 2005, University of Manchester

--- Registration now open:
http://www.ncess.ac.uk/events/agenda/collaboration/---

The workshop will look at the role of e-science in supporting new forms
of community and will also provide an opportunity to share experience
from e-science and e-social science pilot demonstrator projects. The
event is aimed at researchers working in e-science/social science, those
interested in Computer Supported Cooperative Work who might consider the
potential of the grid in this area, and those who are interested in
collaborative science or how to support it technically.

Full programme details will be confirmed shortly. Confirmed speakers
include Prof Gary Olson and Prof Judy Olson, University of Michigan.

This event is immediately followed by the First International Conference
on e-Social Science on 22-24 June, also in Manchester:

FIRST INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON e-SOCIAL SCIENCE

22nd - 24th June 2005, Manchester Conference Centre, UK

The conference will examine the application of Grid technology in the
social sciences and will showcase some of the research currently
underway in this exciting new field of research. Other topics include -

*	Case studies of e-social science in practice
*	Studies of (e-)research and (e-)social science research
practices
*	The benefits and challenges of large scale collaborative
research

* Enhancing existing social science research methods through
e-social science

* Innovation in research methods through e-social science

* Socio-technical issues in the development of e-social science
research methods

* Ethical issues and challenges in the collection, integration,
sharing and analysis of sociological data

*	New sources and forms of sociological data
*	Standards for metadata, ontologies, annotation, curation, etc
*	Middleware for data collection, sharing and integration
*	Tools for data mining, visualisation, analysis, modelling and
collaborative research
*	Understanding requirements for research tools and middleware

In addition to the presentation of over 40 full and short papers, there
will be 6 workshops each exploring the application and impact of Grid
technology on social science research, three panel sessions on topics
such as confidentiality and metadata and three key note sessions. This
conference is organised by the ESRC National Centre for e-Social Science
and further information can be found on our website at
